Preparation of superconducting thin films of transition-metal interstitial compounds
Sputtering technique forms transition-metal interstitial compounds into superconducting thin films having transition temperatures similar to those of the bulk materials. Since the magnetic-field and current-carrying properties of the films exceed those of the bulk materials, they may have applications other than in tunneling devices
Magnets with stabilized conductors
Method fabricates stabilized composite conductor, for use in construction of magnets, using equal amounts of superconducting and metal materials, thus reducing weight, cost and size
Cytomegalovirus infection of the upper gastrointestinal tract following liver transplantation—incidence, location, and severity in cyclosporine- and FK506-treated patients
One hundred and forty randomly selected liver transplant recipients were studied before and after primary orthotopic liver transplantation for the presence or absence of CMV enteritis. Following OLTx, 65 patients were treated with cyclosporine A and 75 were treated with FK506. The two groups were similar with regard to the incidence, location, and outcome of their upper gastrointestinal CMV infection. Prior to OLTx, only one patient had evidence of enteric CMV infection. The incidence of CMV enteritis post-OLTx was 27.7% in the CsA-treated group and 20% in the FK-treated group. During the first posttransplant month, no patient in the FK-treated group developed CMV enteritis, compared with 11.5% of the patients who were treated with CsA (P<0.05). Gastric CMV was found in over 80% of those positive for any organ in either group. In addition to CMV infection of the upper gastrointestinal tract, clinically evident CMV disease involved more nonenteric organs in the CsA-treated group than in the FK-treated group. In the CsA-treated group, CMV-negative patients had a statistically higher 1-year survival rate (100%) than CMV-positive patients (77.8%) (P<0.05). In the FK-treated group, no difference in survival was observed between CMV-positive or CMV-negative cases at 1 year. Of the patients on CsA, 20% received OKT3 for persistent rejection, as compared with 13% in the FK-treated group. The patients receiving both CsA and OKT3 had a higher rate of upper gastrointestinal CMV infection than did FK-treated patients who also received OKT3 therapy (38.5% versus 20%, respectively). Based upon these data, it can be concluded that (1) patients receiving FK have a lower incidence of enteric CMV infection; (2) following OLTx, upper gastrointestinal CMV infection presents later in FK-treated patients; (3) the stomach is the most frequently involved organ in the UGIT; (4) FK-treated liver recipients have less severe enteric CMV infection than do CsA-treated patients; (5) enteric CMV is not a major cause of mortality in liver trans lant recipients; and (6) in patients receiving FK, those who require OKT3 therapy do not appear to be at a greater risk for the development of CMV enteritis than those who do not. © 1992 by Williams & Wilkins
Electrical transport properties of bulk MgB2 materials synthesized by the electrolysis on fused mixtures of MgCl2, NaCl, KCl and MgB2O4
Electrolysis was carried out on fused mixtures of MgCl2, NaCl, KCl and MgB2O4
under an Ar flow at 600C. Electrical resistivity measurements for the grown
deposits show an onset of superconducting transition at 37 K in the absence of
applied magnetic field. The resistivity decreases down to zero below 32 K. From
an applied-field dependence of resistivity, an upper critical field and a
coherence length were calculated to be 9.7 T and 5.9 nm at 0 K, respectively
Investigation of superconducting interactions and amorphous semiconductors
Research papers on superconducting interactions and properties and on amorphous materials are presented. The search for new superconductors with improved properties was largely concentrated on the study of properties of thin films. An experimental investigation of interaction mechanisms revealed no new superconductivity mechanism. The properties of high transition temperature, type 2 materials prepared in thin film form were studied. A pulsed field solenoid capable of providing fields in excess of 300 k0e was developed. Preliminary X-ray measurements were made of V3Si to determine the behavior of cell constant deformation versus pressure up to 98 kilobars. The electrical properties of amorphous semiconducting materials and bulk and thin film devices, and of amorphous magnetic materials were investigated for developing radiation hard, inexpensive switches and memory elements
Rapid growth of an intact human liver transplanted into a recipient larger than the donor
Two individuals undergoing orthotopic hepatic transplantation received livers from donors who were on average 10 kg smaller than themselves based on recipient ideal body weight. As a result, the donor livers in these 2 cases were 29%-59% smaller than would be expected had the donor liver and recipient been matched ideally. The liver grafts in the recipients steadily increased in size, as determined by serial computed tomography scanning, to achieve new volumes consistent with those that would have been expected in a normal individual of the recipient's size, sex, and age. Fasting plasma levels of amino acids, glucagon, insulin, and standard liver injury tests were monitored to determine which measure best reflected the changes observed in the size of the grafts over time. No relationship between the changes observed in any of these parameters and hepatic growth was apparent. In both cases, the liver increased in volume at a rate of ~70 ml/day. These data demonstrate that a small-for-size liver transplanted into a larger recipient increases in size at a rate of ~70 ml/day until it achieves a liver volume consistent with that expected given the recipient's size, age, and sex. © 1987
Observation of Andreev bound states in YBaCuO/Au/Nb ramp-type Josephson junctions
We report on Josephson and quasiparticle tunneling in YBa2Cu3O7-x(YBCO)/Au/Nb
ramp junctions of several geometries. Macroscopically, tunneling occurs in the
ab-plane of YBCO either in the (100) and (010) direction, or in the (110)
direction. These junctions have a stable and macroscopically well defined
geometry. This allows systematic investigations of both quasiparticle and
Josephson tunneling over a wide range of temperature and magnetic field. With
Nb superconducting, its gap appears in the quasiparticle conductance spectra as
Nb coherence peaks and a dip at the center of a broadened zero-bias conductance
peak (ZBCP). As we increase the temperature or an applied magnetic field both
the Nb coherence peaks and the dip get suppressed and the ZBCP fully develops,
while states are conserved. With Nb in the normal state the ZBCP is observed up
to about 77 K and is almost unaffected by an increasing field up to 7 T. The
measurements are consistent with a convolution of density of states with
broadened Andreev bound states formed at the YBCO/Au/Nb junction interfaces.
Since junctions with different geometries are fabricated on the same substrate
under the same conditions one expects to extract reliable tunneling information
that is crystallographic direction sensitive. In high contrast to Josephson
tunneling, however, the quasiparticle conductance spectra are crystallographic
orientation insensitive: independent whether the tunneling occurs in the (100)
or (110) directions, a pronounced ZBCP is always observed, consistent with
microscopic roughness of the junction interfaces. Qualitatively, all these
particularities regarding quasiparticle spectra hold regardless whether the
YBCO thin film is twinned or untwinned.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figure
Effect of FK 506 chronic administration on bromosulphthalein hepatic excretion in rats
There are several reports dealing with the hepatic effect of FK 506,1–4 some of which are
beneficial while others are adverse. Because the liver is a major target organ that is often the
site of drug toxicity, studies directed at determining whether FK 506 affects specific hepatic
function and/or its histologic appearance are important. Therefore, the present study was
undertaken to examine bromosulphthalein (BSP) elimination kinetics in rats as a sensitive
index of hepatic excretory function under the influence of FK 506 in the rat
