Genetic characterization of human coxsackievirus A6 variants associated with atypical hand, foot and mouth disease: a potential role of recombination in emergence and pathogenicity
Human coxsackievirus A6 (CVA6) is an enterically transmitted enterovirus. Until recently, CVA6 infections were considered as being of minor clinical significance, and only rarely aetiologically linked with hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) associated with other species A enteroviruses (particularly EV71 and CVA16). From 2008 onwards, however, CVA6 infections have been associated with several outbreaks worldwide of atypical HFMD (aHFMD) accompanied by a varicelliform rash. We recently reported CVA6-associated eczema herpeticum occurring predominantly in children and young adults in Edinburgh in January and February 2014. To investigate genetic determinants of novel clinical phenotypes of CVA6, we genetically characterized and analysed CVA6 variants associated with eczema herpeticum in Edinburgh in 2014 and those with aHFMD in CAV isolates collected from 2008. A total of eight recombinant forms (RFs) have circulated worldwide over the past 10 years, with the particularly recent appearance of RF-H associated with eczema herpeticum cases in Edinburgh in 2014. Comparison of phylogenies and divergence of complete genome sequences of CVA6 identified recombination breakpoints in 2A-2C, within VP3, and between 5' untranslated region and VP1. A Bayesian temporal reconstruction of CVA6 evolution since 2004 provided estimates of dates and the actual recombination events that generated more recently appearing recombination groups (RF-E, -F, -G and -H). Associations were observed between recombination groups and clinical presentations of herpangina, aHFMD and eczema herpeticum, but not with VP1 or other structural genes. These observations provided evidence that NS gene regions may potentially contribute to clinical phenotypes and outcomes of CVA6 infection

Ising spins coupled to a four-dimensional discrete Regge skeleton
Regge calculus is a powerful method to approximate a continuous manifold by a
simplicial lattice, keeping the connectivities of the underlying lattice fixed
and taking the edge lengths as degrees of freedom. The discrete Regge model
employed in this work limits the choice of the link lengths to a finite number.
To get more precise insight into the behavior of the four-dimensional discrete
Regge model, we coupled spins to the fluctuating manifolds. We examined the
phase transition of the spin system and the associated critical exponents. The
results are obtained from finite-size scaling analyses of Monte Carlo
simulations. We find consistency with the mean-field theory of the Ising model

Site percolation and random walks on d-dimensional Kagome lattices
The site percolation problem is studied on d-dimensional generalisations of
the Kagome' lattice. These lattices are isotropic and have the same
coordination number q as the hyper-cubic lattices in d dimensions, namely q=2d.
The site percolation thresholds are calculated numerically for d= 3, 4, 5, and
6. The scaling of these thresholds as a function of dimension d, or
alternatively q, is different than for hypercubic lattices: p_c ~ 2/q instead
of p_c ~ 1/(q-1). The latter is the Bethe approximation, which is usually
assumed to hold for all lattices in high dimensions. A series expansion is
calculated, in order to understand the different behaviour of the Kagome'
lattice. The return probability of a random walker on these lattices is also
shown to scale as 2/q. For bond percolation on d-dimensional diamond lattices

Thermodynamics of Two Flavor QCD to Sixth Order in Quark Chemical Potential
We present results of a simulation of 2-flavor QCD on a 4x16^3 lattice using
p4-improved staggered fermions with bare quark mass m/T=0.4. Derivatives of the
thermodynamic grand canonical partition function Z(V,T,mu_u,mu_d) with respect
to chemical potentials mu_(u,d) for different quark flavors are calculated up
to sixth order, enabling estimates of the pressure and the quark number density
as well as the chiral condensate and various susceptibilities as functions of
mu_q = (mu_u + mu_d)/2 via Taylor series expansion. Furthermore, we analyze
baryon as well as isospin fluctuations and discuss the relation between the
radius of convergence of the Taylor series and the chiral critical point in the
QCD phase diagram. We argue that bulk thermodynamic observables do not, at
present, provide direct evidence for the existence of a chiral critical point
in the QCD phase diagram. Results are compared to high temperature perturbation

Critical and Tricritical Hard Objects on Bicolorable Random Lattices: Exact Solutions
We address the general problem of hard objects on random lattices, and
emphasize the crucial role played by the colorability of the lattices to ensure
the existence of a crystallization transition. We first solve explicitly the
naive (colorless) random-lattice version of the hard-square model and find that
the only matter critical point is the non-unitary Lee-Yang edge singularity. We
then show how to restore the crystallization transition of the hard-square
model by considering the same model on bicolored random lattices. Solving this
model exactly, we show moreover that the crystallization transition point lies
in the universality class of the Ising model coupled to 2D quantum gravity. We
finally extend our analysis to a new two-particle exclusion model, whose
regular lattice version involves hard squares of two different sizes. The exact
solution of this model on bicolorable random lattices displays a phase diagram
with two (continuous and discontinuous) crystallization transition lines
meeting at a higher order critical point, in the universality class of the

Double Parton Scattering Singularity in One-Loop Integrals
We present a detailed study of the double parton scattering (DPS)
singularity, which is a specific type of Landau singularity that can occur in
certain one-loop graphs in theories with massless particles. A simple formula
for the DPS singular part of a four-point diagram with arbitrary
internal/external particles is derived in terms of the transverse momentum
integral of a product of light cone wavefunctions with tree-level matrix
elements. This is used to reproduce and explain some results for DPS
singularities in box integrals that have been obtained using traditional loop
integration techniques. The formula can be straightforwardly generalised to
calculate the DPS singularity in loops with an arbitrary number of external
particles. We use the generalised version to explain why the specific MHV and
NMHV six-photon amplitudes often studied by the NLO multileg community are not
divergent at the DPS singular point, and point out that whilst all NMHV
amplitudes are always finite, certain MHV amplitudes do contain a DPS
divergence. It is shown that our framework for calculating DPS divergences in
loop diagrams is entirely consistent with the `two-parton GPD' framework of
Diehl and Schafer for calculating proton-proton DPS cross sections, but is

Supporting home care for the dying: an evaluation of healthcare professionals' perspectives of an individually tailored hospice at home service
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore health care professionals' perspective of hospice at home service that has different components, individually tailored to meet the needs of patients. BACKGROUND: Over 50% of adults diagnosed with a terminal illness and the majority of people who have cancer, prefer to be cared for and to die in their own home. Despite this, most deaths occur in hospital. Increasing the options available for patients, including their place of care and death is central to current UK policy initiatives. Hospice at home services aim to support patients to remain at home, yet there are wide variations in the design of services and delivery. A hospice at home service was developed to provide various components (accompanied transfer home, crisis intervention and hospice aides) that could be tailored to meet the individual needs of patients. DESIGN: An evaluation study. METHODS: Data were collected from 75 health care professionals. District nurses participated in one focus group (13) and 31 completed an electronic survey. Palliative care specialist nurses participated in a focus group (9). One hospital discharge co-ordinator and two general practitioners participated in semi-structured interviews and a further 19 general practitioners completed the electronic survey. RESULTS: Health care professionals reported the impact and value of each of the components of the service, as helping to support patients to remain at home, by individually tailoring care. They also positively reported that support for family carers appeared to enable them to continue coping, rapid access to the service was suggested to contribute to faster hospital discharges and the crisis intervention service was identified as helping patients remain in their own home, where they wanted to be. CONCLUSIONS: Health care professionals perceived that the additional individualised support provided by this service contributed to enabling patients to continue be cared for and to die at home in their place of choice. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: This service offers various components of a hospice at home service, enabling a tailor made package to meet individual and local area needs. Developing an individually tailored package of care appears to be able to meet specific needs
Force-induced desorption of a linear polymer chain adsorbed on an attractive surface
We consider a model of self-avoiding walk on a lattice with on-site repulsion
and an attraction for every vertex of the walk visited on the surface to study
force-induced desorption of a linear polymer chain adsorbed on an attractive
surface and use the exact enumeration technique for analyzing how the critical
force for desorption depends on the temperature. The curve
gives the boundary separating the adsorbed phase from the desorbed phase. Our
results show that in two dimensions where surface is a line the force
increases monotonically as temperature is lowered and becomes almost constant
at very low temperatures. In case of three-dimensions we, however, find
re-entrance, i. e. goes through a maximum as temperature is lowered.
The behaviour of the polymer chain at different values of temperature and force
is examined by calculating the probability distribution of the height from the

Do sexist mothers change more diapers? Ambivalent sexism, maternal gatekeeping and the division of childcare
This study examined the role of ambivalent sexist ideologies in the division of childcare responsibilities. It proposed maternal gatekeeping as a mediator through which hostile sexist attitudes toward men and women facilitate gendered division of childcare. A sample of 207 mothers with at least one child aged 6 years or younger completed extensive questionnaires. As hypothesized, the mother’s hostile sexist attitudes toward men and women were positively related to maternal gatekeeping tendencies. Gatekeeping, in turn, was related to the mother’s greater time investment in childcare and greater share of childcare tasks relative to the father. Finally, hostile sexist attitudes toward men and women had an indirect effect on the mother’s hours of care and relative share of childcare tasks, mediated though maternal gatekeeping. The findings underscore the importance of investigating the mechanisms through which sexist ideologies are translated into daily behaviors that help maintain a gendered social structure. They may be utilized to inform parenting interventions aimed at increasing collaborative family work and fathers’ participation
