Bone metabolic disorders such as osteoporosis are characterized by the loss of mineral from the bone tissue leading to its structural weakening and increased susceptibility to fractures. A growing body of evidence suggests that inflammation and oxidative stress play an important role in the pathophysiological processes involved in the rise of these conditions. As the currently available therapeutic strategies are often characterized by toxic effects associated with their long-term use, natural antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds such as polyphenols promise to be a valuable alternative for the prevention and treatment of these disorders. In this scope, the marine environment is becoming an important source of bioactive compounds with potential pharmacological applications. Here, we explored the bioactive potential of three species of holothurians (Echinodermata) and four species of tunicates (Chordata) as sources of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds with a particular focus on polyphenolic substances. Hydroethanolic and aqueous extracts were obtained from animals' biomass and screened for their content of polyphenols and their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Hydroethanolic fractions of three species of tunicates displayed high polyphenolic content associated with strong antioxidant potential and anti-inflammatory activity. Extracts were thereafter tested for their capacity to promote bone formation and mineralization by applying an assay that uses the developing operculum of zebrafish (Danio rerio) to assess the osteogenic activity of compounds. The same three hydroethanolic fractions from tunicates were characterized by a strong in vivo osteogenic activity, which positively correlated with their anti-inflammatory potential as measured by COX-2 inhibition. This study highlights the therapeutic potential of polyphenol-rich hydroethanolic extracts obtained from three species of tunicates as a substrate for the development of novel drugs for the treatment of bone disorders correlated to oxidative stress and inflammatory processes.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

An artificial reef at the edge of the deep: An interdisciplinary case study

Just nearby the largest submarine canyon in Europe - off the western coast of Portugal - is located the Nazare acute accent artificial reef (NAR) deployed in 2010 and the first of its kind in this coast. NAR aimed to improve social and economic resilience of the local communities, mainly by creating a safer and closer area for fishing and to enhance commercially exploitable marine resources. The innovative part of this research lies on the fact that for the first time was developed a multidisciplinary approach for NAR. Scientific evidence from fieldwork shows that in 2015 the reef was already mature and colonized by abundant and diversified macrobenthic assemblages. No evidence of negative impacts of NAR on the soft bottom macrofauna was observed, as assemblage composition in the NAR area and in the vicinity areas is similar. In relation to the primary producers that support the subsequent food chain, there also seems to be a balance between NAR and the surrounding area since phytoplankton was equally abundant throughout the area. Experimental fisheries and underwater visual census results on ichthyofaunal communities in the reef revealed high abundance and low levels of species richness, pouting, Trisopterus luscus Linnaeus, 1758 being the most common fish species found. Concerning NAR socio-economic impact, results from direct site observations (DSOs) showed that only some small-scale fishing vessels were eligible to operate on the NAR area. Thus, comparatively to non-AR areas nearby reef use by fishing vessels differs according to spatial and temporal strata. In what perception was concerned, the NAR has contributed to fish aggregation, though being populated mostly by small fish. Fishers have stated that some factors seemed to have changed after reef deployment. Notwithstanding, the NAR may have been a valuable contribution to an apparently overall socio-economic positive impact on the local fishing community that can be corroborated by the presence of good biological indicators.02PE/2011/GJinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

This paper analyzes the professional education policies in the Lula's administration. It shows their contradictory historical trajectory mixing social fights, government proposals and actions and omissions in the exercise of power. Beginning from the revocation of Decree 2.208/97, the main regulation of professional education of the previous administration, which reveals the dispute for power in this area, it explores the contradiction of proposing a specific bill for professional education instead of reopening the debate on the LDB (Brazilian Education Basic Tenets Law). It then analyzes such programs as Factory School, Integrated Professional Education for Young and Adult People (PROEJA) and Young People Inclusion (PROJOVEM). Despite declarations favoring the integration of basic education and specific training, the professional education policies are based on focal, contingent programs, marked by intense conflicts and contradictions

Community health agents (CHA) are among the professional players that make up the Family Health Strategy (FHS) teams, and their performance is considered as critical to the expansion and consolidation of this strategy. Since the first local experiences with CHAs in the late 1970s, their sociodemographic profile has been changing. This article aims to present and discuss the aspect of education and training of the CHAs who work in Program Area (PA) 5.2 of the city of Rio de Janeiro, integrating work and education and understanding the work as an emancipatory principle. This study was formulated based on the methodological triangulation idea, reached here based on the original formulation of Denzin. Data on the CHAs' education were obtained via an individual self-applied questionnaire answered by 301 of the CHAs of the 12 FHS modules and six Community Health Workers Strategy (CHWS) modules of PA 5.2. The presentation and discussion of the data show changes in this worker's educational profile, and it can be concluded that the CHA is a worker who is in search of alternative schooling and vocational training. An expansion of the schooling and technical education is defended as a process to consolidate the Unified Health System
