    After fascism, Italians and Germans proved themselves enthusiastic voters in the newly established democratic setting. The article investigates the local practices regarding the ballot by focusing on the performative character of voting which reveals notions of the state, the local and the individual, of political parties and political conflict: notions that shaped the specific democratic cultures in Italy and Germany. Reading the voting practices through the lens of these issues, it is argued that the importance of polling in the two post-fascist societies derived from different social and political meanings inherent to the act of the vote. Nevertheless, in both countries these meanings helped to establish a democratic tradition that promoted voting attendance as a sign of belonging to the local community of ‘good democrats’

    Moderne, objektorientierte Sprachen spielen bei der Entwicklung von Software fĂŒr eingebettete Systeme bislang kaum eine Rolle. Die GrĂŒnde hierfĂŒr sind vielfĂ€ltig, meist wird jedoch die mangelnde Effizienz und der grĂ¶ĂŸere Speicherbedarf hervorgehoben. Obwohl Java viele Eigenschaften hat, die sehr fĂŒr einen Einsatz in eingebetteten Systemen sprechen, so hĂ€ngt doch gerade Java vielfach immer noch das Vorurteil an, in Systemen mit beschrĂ€nkter Rechenleistung und Speicher zu viele Ressourcen zu benötigen. Diese Arbeit soll dazu beitragen, diese Vorurteile abzutragen. Sie stellt insbesondere Techniken vor, die den Speicherbedarf einer JVM so gering wie möglich halten und diese effizient mit der zur VerfĂŒgung stehenden Rechenleistung umgehen lassen. Viele der dargestellten Verfahren und Algorithmen wurden in der Kertasarie VM implementiert, einer virtuellen Maschine, die speziell fĂŒr den Einsatz in eingebetteten Systemen konzipiert wurde. Durch die weit verbreitete Vernetzung eingebetteter Systeme ĂŒber das Internet stellt sich in vielen FĂ€llen zudem das Problem einer modernen, abstrakten und effizienten Form der Kommunikation. Aus diesem Grund liegt der zweite Schwerpunkt dieser Arbeit auf dem Vergleich von objektorientierten Middleware-Architekturen, insbesondere von Java-RMI. Auch auf diesem Gebiet wird eine eigene, speziell an eingebettete Systeme angepasste RMI-Variante vorgestellt.Modern, object oriented languages do not play an important role when developing software for embedded systems. There are many reasons for it, most often an inadequate performance and a greater memory demand are mentioned. In spite of the fact that Java has many features suitable for embedded systems, Java often faces the prejudice to consume too much resources in systems with limited processing power and memory. This work is a contribution to diminish this prejudices. It presents techniques to limit the memory demands of a Java Virtual Machine and to effectively cope with limited computing power. Many of the presented methods and algorithms are implemented in the Kertasarie VM, a JVM designed to run in embedded systems.Due to the fact of increasing network capabilities embedded systems often face the problem of a modern, abstract and efficient communication. Therefore the second emphasis of this work is put on the comparison of object oriented middleware architectures, especially Java-RMI. An own implementation for embedded systems is also presented

    A novel ex vivo model for investigation of fluid displacements in bone after endoprosthesis implantation

    Tissue perfusion and mass transport in the vicinity of implant surfaces prior to integration or bonding may play a crucial role in modulating cellular activities associated with bone remodeling, in particular, at early stages of the integration process. Furthermore, fluid displacements have been postulated to transduct mechanical stress signals to bone cells via loading-dependent flow of interstitial fluid through the lacunocanalicular network of bone. Thus, an understanding and new possibilities for influencing these processes may be of great importance for implant success. An ex vivo model was developed and validated for investigation of fluid displacements in bone after endoprosthesis implantation. This model serves to explicate the effects of surgical intervention as well as mechanical loading of the implant-bone construct on load-induced fluid flow in the vicinity of the implant. Using this model, we intend to quantify perfusion and extravascular flow dynamics in the vicinity of implants and define optimal conditions for enhancing molecular transport of osteotropic agents from the implant surface to apposing bone as well as from the blood supply to the implant surface. Furthermore, the elucidation of main transport pathways may help in understanding the distribution of wear particles in bone surrounding implant, a process which has been postulated to cause osteolysis and implant loosenin

    Pulmonary Hypertension in Elderly Patients with Diastolic Dysfunction and Preserved Ejection Fraction

    Abstract: Purpose: Patients with diastolic dysfunction may have a disproportionate degree of elevation in pulmonary pressure, particularly in the elderly. Higher pulmonary vascular resistance in the elderly patients with heart failure but preserved ejection fraction suggests that beyond the post-capillary contribution of pulmonary venous congestion, a pre-capillary component of pulmonary arterial hypertension occurs. We aim to identify if pulmonary vascular resistance in elderly patients with diastolic dysfunction is disproportionately higher than patients with systolic dysfunction independent of filling pressures. Methods: 389 patients identified retrospectively between 2003- 2010; elderly with preserved ejection fraction, elderly with depressed ejection fraction, and primary arterial hypertension who underwent right-heart catheterization at Rush University. Results: No significant difference in pulmonary vascular resistance between systolic and diastolic dysfunction. The mean difference in pulmonary vascular resistance was not statistically significant at 0.40 mmHg·min/l (95 % CI-3.03 to 3.83) with similar left ventricular filling pressures with mean difference of 3.38 mmHg (95 % CI,-1.27 to 8.02). When adjusted for filling pressures, there remained no difference in pulmonary vascular resistance for systolic and diastolic dysfunction. The mean pulmonary vascular resistance is more elevated in systolic heart failure compared to diastolic heart failure with means 3.13 mmHg·min/l and 3.52 mmHg·min/l, respectively

    Gene set analysis for longitudinal gene expression data

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Gene set analysis (GSA) has become a successful tool to interpret gene expression profiles in terms of biological functions, molecular pathways, or genomic locations. GSA performs statistical tests for independent microarray samples at the level of gene sets rather than individual genes. Nowadays, an increasing number of microarray studies are conducted to explore the dynamic changes of gene expression in a variety of species and biological scenarios. In these longitudinal studies, gene expression is repeatedly measured over time such that a GSA needs to take into account the within-gene correlations in addition to possible between-gene correlations.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We provide a robust nonparametric approach to compare the expressions of longitudinally measured sets of genes under multiple treatments or experimental conditions. The limiting distributions of our statistics are derived when the number of genes goes to infinity while the number of replications can be small. When the number of genes in a gene set is small, we recommend permutation tests based on our nonparametric test statistics to achieve reliable type I error and better power while incorporating unknown correlations between and within-genes. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method has a greater power than other methods for various data distributions and heteroscedastic correlation structures. This method was used for an IL-2 stimulation study and significantly altered gene sets were identified.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The simulation study and the real data application showed that the proposed gene set analysis provides a promising tool for longitudinal microarray analysis. R scripts for simulating longitudinal data and calculating the nonparametric statistics are posted on the North Dakota INBRE website <url>http://ndinbre.org/programs/bioinformatics.php</url>.     FRA2 is a STAT5 target gene regulated by IL-2 in human CD4 T cells

    Signal transducers and activators of transcription 5(STAT5) are cytokine induced signaling proteins, which regulate key immunological processes, such as tolerance induction, maintenance of homeostasis, and CD4 T-effector cell differentiation. In this study, transcriptional targets of STAT5 in CD4 T cells were studied by Chromatin Immunoprecipitation (ChIP). Genomic mapping of the sites cloned and identified in this study revealed the striking observation that the majority of STAT5-binding sites mapped to intergenic (>50 kb upstream) or intronic, rather than promoter proximal regions. Of the 105 STAT5 responsive binding sites identified, 94% contained the canonical (IFN-Îł activation site) GAS motifs. A number of putative target genes identified here are associated with tumor biology. Here, we identified Fos-related antigen 2 (FRA2) as a transcriptional target of IL-2 regulated STAT5. FRA2 is a basic -leucine zipper (bZIP) motif 'Fos' family transcription factor that is part of the AP-1 transcription factor complex and is also known to play a critical role in the progression of human tumours and more recently as a determinant of T cell plasticity. The binding site mapped to an internal intron within the FRA2 gene. The epigenetic architecture of FRA2, characterizes a transcriptionally active promoter as indicated by enrichment for histone methylation marks H3K4me1, H3K4me2, H3K4me3, and transcription/elongation associated marks H2BK5me1 and H4K20me1. FRA2 is regulated by IL-2 in activated CD4 T cells. Consistently, STAT5 bound to GAS sequence in the internal intron of FRA2 and reporter gene assays confirmed IL-2 induced STAT5 binding and transcriptional activation. Furthermore, addition of JAK3 inhibitor (R333) or Daclizumab inhibited the induction in TCR stimulated cells. Taken together, our data suggest that FRA2 is a novel STAT5 target gene, regulated by IL-2 in activated CD4 T cells

    A Face-Aging App for Smoking Cessation in a Waiting Room Setting: Pilot Study in an HIV Outpatient Clinic

    Background: There is strong evidence for the effectiveness of addressing tobacco use in health care settings. However, few smokers receive cessation advice when visiting a hospital. Implementing smoking cessation technology in outpatient waiting rooms could be an effective strategy for change, with the potential to expose almost all patients visiting a health care provider without preluding physician action needed. Objective: The objective of this study was to develop an intervention for smoking cessation that would make use of the time patients spend in a waiting room by passively exposing them to a face-aging, public morphing, tablet-based app, to pilot the intervention in a waiting room of an HIV outpatient clinic, and to measure the perceptions of this intervention among smoking and nonsmoking HIV patients. Methods: We developed a kiosk version of our 3-dimensional face-aging app Smokerface, which shows the user how their face would look with or without cigarette smoking 1 to 15 years in the future. We placed a tablet with the app running on a table in the middle of the waiting room of our HIV outpatient clinic, connected to a large monitor attached to the opposite wall. A researcher noted all the patients who were using the waiting room. If a patient did not initiate app use within 30 seconds of waiting time, the researcher encouraged him or her to do so. Those using the app were asked to complete a questionnaire. Results: During a 19-day period, 464 patients visited the waiting room, of whom 187 (40.3%) tried the app and 179 (38.6%) completed the questionnaire. Of those who completed the questionnaire, 139 of 176 (79.0%) were men and 84 of 179 (46.9%) were smokers. Of the smokers, 55 of 81 (68%) said the intervention motivated them to quit (men: 45, 68%;women: 10, 67%);41 (51%) said that it motivated them to discuss quitting with their doctor (men: 32, 49%;women: 9, 60%);and 72 (91%) perceived the intervention as fun (men: 57, 90%;women: 15, 94%). Of the nonsmokers, 92 (98%) said that it motivated them never to take up smoking (men: 72, 99%;women: 20, 95%). Among all patients, 102 (22.0%) watched another patient try the app without trying it themselves;thus, a total of 289 (62.3%) of the 464 patients were exposed to the intervention (average waiting time 21 minutes). Conclusions: A face-aging app implemented in a waiting room provides a novel opportunity to motivate patients visiting a health care provider to quit smoking, to address quitting at their subsequent appointment and thereby encourage physician-delivered smoking cessation, or not to take up smoking

    A skin cancer prevention facial-aging mobile app for secondary schools in Brazil : appearance-focused interventional study.

    Background: The incidence of melanoma is increasing faster than any other major cancer both in Brazil and worldwide. Southeast Brazil has especially high incidences of melanoma, and early detection is low. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a primary risk factor for developing melanoma. Increasing attractiveness is a major motivation among adolescents for tanning. A medical student-delivered intervention that takes advantage of the broad availability of mobile phones and adolescents? interest in their appearance indicated effectiveness in a recent study from Germany. However, the effect in a high-UV index country with a high melanoma prevalence and the capability of medical students to implement such an intervention remain unknown. Objective: In this pilot study, our objective was to investigate the preliminary success and implementability of a photoaging intervention to prevent skin cancer in Brazilian adolescents. Methods: We implemented a free photoaging mobile phone app (Sunface) in 15 secondary school classes in southeast Brazil. Medical students ?mirrored? the pupils? altered 3-dimensional (3D) selfies reacting to touch on tablets via a projector in front of their whole grade accompanied by a brief discussion of means of UV protection. An anonymous questionnaire capturing sociodemographic data and risk factors for melanoma measured the perceptions of the intervention on 5-point Likert scales among 356 pupils of both sexes (13-19 years old; median age 16 years) in grades 8 to 12 of 2 secondary schools in Brazil. Results: We measured more than 90% agreement in both items that measured motivation to reduce UV exposure and only 5.6% disagreement: 322 (90.5%) agreed or strongly agreed that their 3D selfie motivated them to avoid using a tanning bed, and 321 (90.2%) that it motivated them to improve their sun protection; 20 pupils (5.6%) disagreed with both items. The perceived effect on motivation was higher in female pupils in both tanning bed avoidance (n=198, 92.6% agreement in females vs n=123, 87.2% agreement in males) and increased use of sun protection (n=197, 92.1% agreement in females vs n=123, 87.2% agreement in males) and independent of age or skin type. All medical students involved filled in a process evaluation revealing that they all perceived the intervention as effective and unproblematic, and that all pupils tried the app in their presence. Conclusions: The photoaging intervention was effective in changing behavioral predictors for UV protection in Brazilian adolescents. The predictors measured indicated an even higher prospective effectiveness in southeast Brazil than in Germany (>90% agreement in Brazil vs >60% agreement in Germany to both items that measured motivation to reduce UV exposure) in accordance with the theory of planned behavior. Medical students are capable of complete implementation. A randomized controlled trial measuring prospective effects in Brazil is planned as a result of this study
