Study of Volcanic Sediments by Microbeam-PIXE Technique

Single mineral grains in a suite of Cretaceous (85–90 Ma) volcanic sedimentary rocks were analyzed using the microbeam-PIXE technique to understand fundamental geological processes responsible for micro-scale variation in elemental composition across mineral zones, twinning, cleavage planes, fractures and grain boundaries. Distributions of major and trace elements show distinct geochemical features indicative of a specific geological setting and a subsequent diagenetic process in these volcanic sediments. Examples of mineral zoning, microstructures of variable chemistry and post-depositional fluid flow are discussed using the data on feldspar group of minerals

Evaluasi Massa Batuan Terowongan Eksplorasi Uranium Eko-Remaja, Kalan, Kalimantan Barat

Eko-Remaja uranium exploration tunnel, Kalan, West Kalimantan is one of the important facilities for uranium deposit research. The tunnel was built in 1980 with a length of 618 meters penetrating Eko Hill on both sides. The rock inside the tunnel is relatively compact, but it has weak zones in some area. Ground supporting is a method used to overcome the soil and rock collapses which occurred in the tunnel weak zones. Installation of ground supporting system throughout the recent time based on the soil collapse pattern, which occurred when the tunnel opened without any specific study related to rock mass characterization and the requirement of ground support system. This research conducted to evaluate the safety level of Eko-Remaja tunnel and the suitability of ground support location. The evaluation performed by comparing the rock mass characteristics using Rock Mass Rating (RMR) method between the installed rock support and uninstalled rock support locations. Based on the analysis result, RMR value on the installed ground support is classified as class IV or poor rock. Meanwhile, on uninstalled location, the rock is classified as class II or fair rock. Based on the correlation between RMR calculation result and Eko-Remaja tunnel roof span, it is concluded that tunnel ground supports position which are represented by observation location on 38 m, 73 m, and 165 m depth are suitable with rock mass characterization system using RMR method

Analysis of water trees in underground HV cables using the KFUPMmicro-PIXE facility

    Get PDF
Scanning with the micro-PIXE technique was employed to analyze water trees in the XLPE insulation of a field-aged underground HV cable. X-ray spectra of bow tie and vented water trees, the inner and outer semiconductive compounds, and an insulation spot free from any water tree were acquired. Simultaneously, two-dimensional elemental distribution profiles across the water trees were also measured. Various trace element impurities were identified in the analyzed spots and their possible sources are suggested. Differences in elemental distribution profiles in the scanned areas were observed and have been discussed on the basis of the mechanism of incorporation of these elements into the insulation. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of the micro-PIXE facility available in this laboratory in analyzing water trees in underground power cable

Water trees diagnostic of extruded underground cables: a case study in Saudi Arabia eastern province

    Get PDF
In this paper, different electrical diagnostic techniques reported in the literature to predict the condition of extruded underground power cables are reviewed. Two of these techniques, namely the DC leakage current method and the DC conductivity method are applied to 14 underground cable samples rated between 15 kV and 69 kV collected from the Eastern Province of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. For this purpose, a setup has been constructed at the High Voltage Laboratory of King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals, Dhahran-Saudi Arabia. The results obtained show a correlation between the DC leakage current and the conductivity testing and the presence of water trees in the insulation material of cables. Samples suspected to have water trees are examined using the microscopic testing of the insulating material. The results obtained are in agreement with the electrical testing findings

Microanalytical Investigations of Gold-Bearing Rocks from the An Najadi Region in Saudi Arabia

The Proton Induced X-ray Emission technique with a scanning microbeam (micro-PIXE) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) were employed to study gold-bearing rocks from the An Najadi and adjacent regions situated within the exposed northeastern part of the Arabian Shield. These microanalytical investigations, together with routine petrological and ore microscopic studies, demonstrated the presence of important partitioning of major minerals and trace elements in several samples. These measurements also revealed microstructural features including brecciation within quartz grains and metal concentrations within these fracture-controlled micro-conduits. Results showed promise in terms of using distinctive geochemical signatures for ore body recognition. Of particular interest to this study is the presence of an identifiable geochemical trend pertaining to As, Ti, Zn, Cu, Fe and Au. Overall geochemical and petrological data indicate an epithermal mineralization phenomenon for the metal deposits in the An Najadi regions. Mineralization not only postdated brecciation but also followed the regional structural grain of this area

Resepsi Masyarakat Timur Indonesia Tentang “Sopi” (Reinterpretasi Terhadap Empat Serangkai Ayat Khamar)

In this paper contains and describes how the people of Eastern Indonesia in the reception of verses about khamar, namely in an-Nahl (16): 67, QS. al-Baqarah (2): 219, QS. al-Maidah (5): 90, and QS. an-Nisa (4): 43. In the general view ofscholars khamar or the like, sopi is indeed something that is unlawful. This issue then raises problems in the lives of Eastern Indonesian people, who regard khamar or sopi as a symbol of brotherhood, encouragement of tradition and a turning wheel of the people's economy. This paper is qualitative in nature, combining library research and field research. The data in this paper were collected by observation techniques, and interviews were then analyzed using the analysis of the phenomenology of Edmund Husserl, with religious leaders, and traditional leaders as research subjects. This paper contains the formulation of the problem (1) How is the reception of Eastern Indonesian people about theverse khamar in the Qur'an? (2) What is the perception of the community in distinguishing mudharat and the benefits of drinks khamar? They show of community reception through four verses attention to three aspects, symbolizing brotherhood, tradition and players encouragement economy of the community, in the reception also showed a reinterpretation of the meaning of the verse of the Qur'an, in particular paragraph of the law to drink alcohol or gin, which in the science of usul fiqh can be categorized as a rukhshah, that is, a codification of law that is given shari'ah for the mukallaf who has difficulty in carrying out the taklif that is imposed on him
