Adaption of space station technology for lunar operations
Space Station Freedom technology will have the potential for numerous applications in an early lunar base program. The benefits of utilizing station technology in such a fashion include reduced development and facility costs for lunar base systems, shorter schedules, and verification of such technology through space station experience. This paper presents an assessment of opportunities for using station technology in a lunar base program, particularly in the lander/ascent vehicles and surface modules
Research in interactive scene analysis
An interactive scene interpretation system (ISIS) was developed as a tool for constructing and experimenting with man-machine and automatic scene analysis methods tailored for particular image domains. A recently developed region analysis subsystem based on the paradigm of Brice and Fennema is described. Using this subsystem a series of experiments was conducted to determine good criteria for initially partitioning a scene into atomic regions and for merging these regions into a final partition of the scene along object boundaries. Semantic (problem-dependent) knowledge is essential for complete, correct partitions of complex real-world scenes. An interactive approach to semantic scene segmentation was developed and demonstrated on both landscape and indoor scenes. This approach provides a reasonable methodology for segmenting scenes that cannot be processed completely automatically, and is a promising basis for a future automatic system. A program is described that can automatically generate strategies for finding specific objects in a scene based on manually designated pictorial examples
Raman Scattering from Atmospheric Nitrogen in the Stratosphere
The Mark II laser radar system at Kingston, Jamaica, has been used to make observations on the Raman shifted line from atmospheric nitrogen at 828.5 nm. The size of the system makes it possible to detect signals from heights of up to 40 kilometres. The effects of aerosol scattering observed using a single wavelength are almost eliminated, and a profile of nitrogen density may be obtained. Assuming a constant mixing ratio, this may be interpreted as a profile of atmospheric density whose accuracy is comparable to that obtained from routine meteorological soundings. In order to obtain an accurate profile several interfering effects have had to be examined and, where necessary, eliminated. These include: 1) Fluorescence in optical components 2) Leakage of signal at 694.3 nm. 3) Overload effects and non-linearities in the receiving and counting electronics. Most of these effects have been carefully examined and comparisons are being made between the observed atmospheric density profiles and local meteorological radio-sonde measurements. Good agreement has been obtained over the region of overlap (15 - 30 KID), discrepancies being of the same order as the experimental accuracy (1-10%), depending on height and length of period of observation
Probing Nucleon Strangeness with Neutrinos: Nuclear Model Dependences
The extraction of the nucleon's strangeness axial charge, Delta_s, from
inclusive, quasielastic neutral current neutrino cross sections is studied
within the framework of the plane-wave impulse approximation. We find that the
value of Delta_s can depend significantly on the choice of nuclear model used
in analyzing the quasielastic cross section. This model-dependence may be
reduced by one order of magnitude when Delta_s is extracted from the ratio of
total proton to neutron yields. We apply this analysis to the interpretation of
low-energy neutrino cross sections and arrive at a nuclear theory uncertainty
of plus/minus 0.03 on the value of Delta_s expected to be determined from the
ratio of proton and neutron yields measured by the LSND collaboration. This
error compares favorably with estimates of the SU(3)-breaking uncertainty in
the value of Delta_s extracted from inclusive, polarized deep-inelastic
structure function measurements. We also point out several general features of
the quasielastic neutral current neutrino cross section and compare them with
the analogous features in inclusive, quasielastic electron scattering.Comment: 40 pages (including 11 postscript figures), uses REVTeX and

Partonic Energy Loss and the Drell-Yan Process
We examine the current status of the extraction of the rate of partonic
energy loss in nuclei from A dependent data. The advantages and difficulties of
using the Drell-Yan process to measure the energy loss of a parton traversing a
cold nuclear medium are discussed. The prospects of using relatively low energy
proton beams for a definitive measurement of partonic energy loss are

Inclusive Nucleon Emission Induced by Quasi--Elastic Neutrino--Nucleus Interactions
We study the quasi--elastic contribution to the inclusive ,
, and
reactions in nuclei using a Monte Carlo simulation method to account for the
rescattering of the outgoing nucleon. As input, we take the reaction
probability from the microscopical many body framework developed in Phys. Rev.
{\bf C70} (2004) 055503 for charged-current induced reactions, while for
neutral currents we use results from a natural extension of the model described
in that reference. The nucleon emission process studied here is a clear signal
for neutral--current neutrino driven reactions, that can be used in the

On generation-integrated energy storage
Generation-integrated energy storage (GIES) systems store energy at some point along the transformation between the primary energy form and electricity. Instances exist already in natural hydro power, biomass generation, wave power, and concentrated solar power. GIES systems have been proposed for wind, nuclear power and they arise naturally in photocatalysis systems that are in development. GIES systems can compare very favourably in both performance and total cost against equivalent non-integrated systems comprising both generation and storage. Despite this, they have not hitherto been recognised as a discrete class of systems. Consequently policy decisions affecting development or demonstration projects and policy approaches concerning low-carbon generation are not fully informed.
