    Interferometric observations of SiO thermal emission in the inner wind of M-type AGB stars IK Tauri and IRC+10011

    Context. AGB stars go through a process of strong mass-loss that involves pulsations of the atmosphere, which extends to a region where the conditions are adequate for dust grains to form. Radiation pressure acts on these grains which, coupled to the gas, drive a massive outflow. The details of this process are not clear, including which molecules are involved in the condensation of dust grains. Aims. To study the role of the SiO molecule in the process of dust formation and mass-loss in M-type AGB stars. Methods. Using the IRAM NOEMA interferometer we observed the 28^{28}SiO and 29^{29}SiO J=32J=3-2, v=0v=0 emission from the inner circumstellar envelope of the evolved stars IK Tau and IRC+10011. We computed azimuthally averaged emission profiles to compare the observations to models using a molecular excitation and ray-tracing code for SiO thermal emission. Results. We observed circular symmetry in the emission distribution. We also found that the source diameter varies only marginally with radial velocity, which is not the expected behavior for envelopes expanding at an almost constant velocity. The adopted density, velocity, and abundance laws, together with the mass-loss rate, which best fit the observations, give us information on the chemical behavior of the SiO molecule and its role in the dust formation process. Conclusions. The results indicate that there is a strong coupling between the depletion of gas phase SiO and gas acceleration in the inner envelope. This could be explained by the condensation of SiO into dust grains

    Surface Electromyography of the Longissimus and Gluteus Medius Muscles in Greyhounds Walking and Trotting on Ground Flat, Up, and Downhill

    In the field of canine rehabilitation, knowledge of muscle function in the therapeutic exercises prescribed is needed by physical therapists and veterinary surgeons. To gain insight into the function of longissimus dorsi (LD) and gluteus medius (GM) muscles in dogs, five Greyhounds performing leash walking and trotting on the ground flat, up (+7%), and downhill (−7%) were studied by surface electromyography, and the mean and maximum activity was compared. For the same incline, the surface electromyography (sEMG) of LD was higher (p < 0.05) at the trot than at the walk. In LD muscle, trotting uphill showed significantly higher maximum activity than any other exercise. A change of +7% incline or −7% decline affected (increased or decreased, respectively) the mean sEMG of the LD and GM muscles of dogs walking or trotting on the ground. When combined, the influence of gait and incline on electromyographic activity was analyzed, and walking at certain inclines showed no difference with trotting at certain inclines. Walking and trotting up and downhill added separate therapeutic value to flat motion. The results of the present study might contribute to a better understanding of the function of LD and GM muscles in dogs, this being especially useful for the field of canine rehabilitation

    A Novel Direct Load Control Testbed for Smart Appliances

    The effort to continuously improve and innovate smart appliances (SA) energy management requires an experimental research and development environment which integrates widely differing tools and resources seamlessly. To this end, this paper proposes a novel Direct Load Control (DLC) testbed, aiming to conveniently support the research community, as well as analyzing and comparing their designs in a laboratory environment. Based on the LabVIEW computing platform, this original testbed enables access to knowledge of major components such as online weather forecasting information, distributed energy resources (e.g., energy storage, solar photovoltaic), dynamic electricity tariff from utilities and demand response (DR) providers together with different mathematical optimization features given by General Algebraic Modelling System (GAMS). This intercommunication is possible thanks to the different applications programming interfaces (API) incorporated into the system and to intermediate agents specially developed for this case. Different basic case studies have been presented to envision the possibilities of this system in the future and more complex scenarios, to actively support the DLC strategies. These measures will offer enough flexibility to minimize the impact on user comfort combined with support for multiple DR programs. Thus, given the successful results, this platform can lead to a solution towards more efficient use of energy in the residential environment

    Circumstellar envelopes of semi-regular long-period variables: mass-loss rate estimates and general model-fitting of the molecular gas

    We aim to study the main properties of a volume-limited unbiased sample of well-characterized semi-regular variables (SRs) in order to clarify important issues, such as the formation of axially symmetric planetary nebulae (PNe) from spherical circumstellar envelopes (CSEs), which takes place during the mass-loss process along the AGB phase. We present new high-S/N IRAM 30m observations of the 12CO J=2-1, J=1-0, and 13CO J=1-0 lines, in a volume-limited sample of SRs. We analyzed the data by characterizing the main properties of the CSEs. The 12CO J=2-1 data were used to study the profiles, while the 12CO J=1-0 data were used to estimate mass-loss rates for the complete sample. We have classified the sources into four groups according to the different profiles and final gas expansion velocities. Type 1 and 2 profiles are broad and narrow symmetric lines, respectively. Type 3 profiles on the contrary are strange profiles with very pronounced asymmetries. Finally, type 4 profiles are those showing two different components: a narrow line profile superimposed on a broad pedestal component. Interestingly, we report a moderate correlation between mass-loss rates and 12CO J=1-0/J=2-1 line intensity ratios for O-rich SRs, suggesting a different behaviour between C- and O-rich SRs. Using SHAPE+shapemol, we find a unified simple model based on an oblate spheroid placed in different orientations that may explain all the 12CO profiles in the sample, indicating that the gas expansion is in general predominantly equatorial. Moreover, in order to explain the type 4 profiles, we define an extra component which may somehow be a biconical structure or similar. Type 1 and 2 profiles, curiously, may also be explained by standard spherically symmetric envelopes. We conclude that most circumstellar shells around SRs show axial, strongly nonspherical symmetry.Comment: 32 pages, 28 figures, and 10 tables, accepted for publication in A&
