Assessment of climate change statistical downscaling methods: Application and comparison of two statistical methods to a single site in Lisbon
Dissertação apresentada na Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa para a obtenção do grau de Mestre em Engenharia do AmbienteClimate change impacts are very dependent on regional geographical features, local climate
variability, and socio-economic conditions. Impact assessment studies on climate change
should therefore be performed at the local or at most at the regional level for the evaluation of possible consequences. However, climate scenarios are produced by Global Circulation Models for the entire Globe with spatial resolutions of several hundred kilometres. For this reason, downscaling methods are needed to bridge the gap between the large scale climate
scenarios and the fine scale where local impacts happen.
An overview on downscaling techniques is presented, referring the main limitation and
advantages on dynamical, statistical and statistical-dynamic approaches. For teams with limited computing power and non-climate experts, statistical downscaling is currently the most feasible approach at obtaining climate data for future impact studies.
To assess the capability of statistical downscaling methods to represent local climate variability it is shown an inter-comparison and uncertainties analysis study between a stochastic weather generator, using LARS-WG tool, and a hybrid of stochastic weather generator and transfer function methods, using the SDSM tool. Models errors and uncertainties were estimated using non-parametric statistical methods at the 95% confidence interval for precipitation, maximum temperature and minimum temperature for the mean and variance for a single site in Lisbon.
The comparison between the observed dataset and the simulations showed that both
models performance are acceptable. However, the SDSM tool was able to better represent
the minimum and maximum temperature while LARS-WG simulations on precipitation are
better. The analysis of both models uncertainties for the mean are very close to the observed data in all months, but the uncertainties for the variances showed that the LARWG simulation performance is slightly better for precipitation and that both model
simulations for minimum and maximum temperature are very close from the observed.
It is also presented the simulations for the A2a SRES scenario for the 2041-2070 periods
showing that both methods can produce similar general tendencies, but an uncertainties analysis on the scenarios is also advised
Analysis of the colour profile of port wines using different instrumental methods and visual approaches
Colour is an important quality parameter in wines and is the result of a complex
mixture of pigments (including anthocyanins and their derivatives, quinones, xanthyllium
compounds, etc.). Red wine colour changes over time, as pigments react between themselves
and with other wine macromolecules (particularly polyphenols). During wine tasting, colour
is normally assessed on the outer rim of the wine in a tilted glass, since most wines are too
opaque to be analysed in the middle of the glass. Therefore, depending on the depth of
observation considered, the perception of wine colour can be different.
The current official (OIV) method for measuring wine colour is based on UV/Vis
spectrophotometric determination of the spectrum. In the current official (OIV) method, the
transmittance spectrum of a particular sample is measured and used to calculate CIE-L*a*b*
parameters (L*, a* and b*), which define a single (predominant) colour for a particular wine.
Reflectance colorimetry is an alternative well-established method for measuring
colour in foodstuffs, which can also be used in translucent samples (such as wines) as long as
a reflective background is used.
In this work, a reflectance colorimeter was used to measure CIE-L*a*b* colour
parameters of Port wine samples of different categories at different depths, in Petri dishes.
The obtained results were compared with the parameters obtained using the OIV method. In
addition, the colour profile of Port wine samples was analysed using the colorimetric
approach described above. An (untrained) panel was asked to assess the colour hue of the
wine samples in Petri dishes, using an unstructured line scale, with the goal of establishing a
correlation with the colorimetric readings at the same depths.
The results suggest the colorimetric method can be used as an alternative to
the OIV method for estimating the L* and H* parameters (the most important for wine colour
definition), being quicker and more informative. In addition, there is a good correlation
between H* parameter of colorimetric readings and the visual assessment of colour hue at all
tested depths, being slightly better at lower depths. The colorimetric determination of wine
colour at different depths can be conveniently used to characterize the visually perceived hue
of Port wines.
meio do copo.
utilizando a abordagem colorimétrica descrita acima.
The importance of dietary balance at COVID-19: the systematic review
Introduction: COVID-19 disease has been heralded as a global pandemic by the World Health Organization. Dietary therapy and immunity play a decisive role in SARS-CoV-2 infection. In this sense, the lack of regulation and the excessive immune response to the viral stimulus produces an exacerbated pro-inflammatory cytokines (cytokine storm), reaching the state of hyperinflammation. Objective: To conduct a systematic review of the main considerations in the management of dietary therapy in the control or prophylaxis of COVID-19. Methods: Clinical studies with qualitative and/or quantitative analysis were included, following the rules of the systematic review-PRISMA. Results: A total of 370 articles were found involving dietary therapy, immunity, and COVID-19. A total of 107 articles were evaluated in full, and 28 were included and discussed in this study. Underlying systemic inflammation is believed to exacerbate COVID-19 infection. Studies have shown that there is a high risk of mortality in individuals with pre-existing health problems, such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and obesity. Nutritional status is known to play a significant role in patient outcomes. It is necessary to follow a diet characterized by anti-inflammatory properties to benefit or prevent COVID-19. Adequate supplies of zinc, selenium, and vitamin D are essential for resistance to other viral infections, immune function, and reduced inflammation. There are nutritional triggers to favor immune-strengthening responses, as well as improving the performance of mitosis, meiosis, and all cellular functioning, all of this functioning is directly integrated with the energy balance and nutritional status of the body. Endogenous metabolites and nutrients in the diet can directly influence epigenetic enzymes. Conclusion: It is necessary to control the activities of inflammatory mediators through modifiable risk factors, such as diet, exercise, and healthy lifestyle choices to control or prevent the harmful effects of COVID-19

Development of layered BNC composites for Food Packaging
The food industry is increasingly demanding advanced and sustainable packaging materials with improved physical, mechanical and barrier properties. The currently used materials are synthetic and non-degradable, which raises environmental concerns. Research efforts have been made in recent years towards the development of bio-based sustainable packaging materials. One of those is nanocellulose, which have a potential to be used as matrix, as nanofillers or as coatings for composites [1].
A promising material is bacterial nanocellulose (BNC), a biopolymer extruded by Komagaebacter xylinus as a 3D nanofibrillar network. BNC offers interesting properties such as high porosity, biocompatibility, non-toxicity and biodegradability [2]. From a food packaging perspective, BNC has a great potential due to the great mechanical performance. However, the high water affinity of BNC is ta major obstacle for food packaging applications [3]. Therefore, the first task was to develop a layered biodegradable composite based on a plasticized BNC (either with glycerol or polyethylene glycol) and poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV), as an attempt to improve the water vapour permeability. The PHBV coating on plasticized BNC reduced significantly the water vapour permeability (from 0.990 to 0.032 g.m.m².day¹.Pa¹), increased the hydrophobicity (contact angle from 10-40° to 80-90°), but decreased the stiffness (from 3.1 GPa to 1.3 Gpa) of the BNC composite. The mechanical and barrier properties of the obtained layered composite were considered suitable for food packaging applications.
Although the results obtained being important for food packaging, its commercial use is still far off due to production costs and low production capacity, especially when compared to plant-based nanocellulose [1]. Nevertheless, BNC is a proven material to support substances that play an active/intelligent role in food packaging, with ability to carry and release active substances [4, 5]. Therefore, a functionalized BNC film was developed, by in situ incorporating zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs). The synthesis of ZnONPs was based on co-precipitation method, using zinc acetate and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) (added dropwise) as reactants. In order to prevent aggregation of ZnO NPs, polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) was used as capping agent.
Overall, dropwise addition of NaOH in zinc acetate-PVOH (with immersed BNC), allowed the production of ZnONPs (144 nm), with low polydispersity index (0.139) and a homogeneous distribution of ZnONPs on the BNC. Concerning the antimicrobial activity, the minimum ZnO dosage for antimicrobial activity was 20%mZnO/mBNCZnO, being effective on gram bacteria (such Escherichia Coli) but only on some gram + bacteria (such Staphylococcus Aureus). The migration of ZnO onto food simulators are under testing.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
intempéries e perigos, a designada cabana primitiva.
This research aims to be a study about vernacular or popular architecture and its
contemporary intervention, understanding the different identities according to
geographical location. We will focus on the case study of Quinta de Seves, located in
Covilhã.
We will start with a macro analysis of vernacular architecture’s concept, which
emerged as an Architecture domain and started to be studied in the second half of the
20th century. It influenced several contemporary architects. Some of them developed
studies and projects to develop interventions on cultural and historical heritage.
It is also our goal to clarify vernacular architecture’s characteristics, standing out
the fact that it consists on an addition of elements considering the needs, being mainly
rural and done with local materials and according to regional characteristics. In this
matter, several elements are created, usually taking advantaged of pre-existing walls
from older buildings. We will show the practical and historical evolution of this domain,
from the period when men started to be sedentary and emerges the need to build the first
shelters, primitive ones, to be protected against bad weather and dangers.
Looking to the national context we will analyze casa portuguesa movement and
popular architecture in Portugal in order to clarify the recovery of popular contemporary
buildings and to define a model for their preservation, along with the preservation of
their history. For this matter we will do a case study, a proposal to be developed in Quinta
de Seves.
Vernacular architecture can be a way to match passed lines with modernity,
valuing regional buildings, with a particular emphasis on rural areas and when related
to cultural and historical heritage. It is a very important incentive and attraction to
promote tourism in those regions which need greater dynamism in this sector
