    This invention employs a magnetometer as a magnetic heading reference for a vehicle such as a small aircraft. The magnetometer is mounted on a directional dial in the aircraft in the vicinity of the pilot such that it is free to turn with the dial about the yaw axis of the aircraft. The invention includes a circuit for generating a signal proportional to the northerly turning error produced in the magnetometer due to the vertical component of the earth's magnetic field. This generated signal is then subtracted from the output of the magnetometer to compensate for the northerly turning error

    A gyro-less wing leveler and directional autopilot were developed and flight tested in a single-engine light airplane. The primary purpose of the project was to develop a simple, reliable, low-cost stability augmentation and autopilot system for light aircraft. The wing leveler used a fluidic inertial rate sensor, electronic signal processing circuitry, and vacuum operated servos. A strap-down magnetic heading reference of simple design provided the wing leveler with directional autopilot capability. Flight tests indicated that the performance of the gyro-less wing leveler was equal to that of a commercial wing leveler using a gyroscopic rate sensor. Drift-free, long-term, heading-hold capability of the magnetic heading reference was demonstrated

    The Preventive Effects of Arrest on Intimate Partner Violence: Research, Policy and Theory

    This research addresses the limitations of prior analyses and reviews of five experiments testing for the specific deterrent effect of arrest on intimate partner violence by applying to individual level data consistent eligibility criteria, common independent and outcome measures, and appropriate statistical tests. Based on 4,032 cases involving adult males who assaulted their female intimate partners, multivariate regression analyses show consistent but modest reductions in subsequent offenses targeting the original victim that is attributable to arresting the suspect. Although the reductions attributable to arrest are similar across all five studies, other factors, such as the suspect\u27s prior arrest record, are stronger predictors of subsequent offenses. The effect of arrest is also modest compared with the general decline in offenses toward the same victim during the follow-up period

    Big end bearing losses with thermal cavitation flow under cylinder deactivation

    The paper presents a mixed thermo-hydrodynamic analysis of elliptic bore bearings using combined solution of Navier–Stokes, continuity and energy equations for multi-phase flow conditions. A vapour transport equation is also included to ensure continuity of flow in the cavitation region for the multiple phases as well as Rayleigh–Plesset to take into account the growth and collapse of cavitation bubbles. This approach removes the need to impose artificial outlet boundary conditions in the form of various cavitation algorithms which are often employed to deal with lubricant film rupture and reformation. The predictions show closer conformance to experimental measurements than have hitherto been reported in the literature. The validated model is then used for the prediction of frictional power losses in big end bearings of modern engines under realistic urban driving conditions. In particular, the effect of cylinder deactivation (CDA) upon engine bearing efficiency is studied. It is shown that big-end bearings losses contribute to an increase in the brake specific fuel consumption with application of CDA contrary to the gains made in fuel pumping losses to the cylinders. The study concludes that implications arising from application of new technologies such as CDA should also include their effect on tribological performance
