The Space Transportation Materials and Structures Technology Workshop was held on September 23-26, 1991, in Newport News, Virginia. The workshop, sponsored by the NASA Office of Space Flight and the NASA Office of Aeronautics and Space Technology, was held to provide a forum for communication within the space materials and structures technology developer and user communities. Workshop participants were organized into a Vehicle Technology Requirements session and three working panels: Materials and Structures Technologies for Vehicle Systems, Propulsion Systems, and Entry Systems

The workshop was held to provide a forum for communication within the space materials and structures technology developer and user communities. Workshop participants were organized into a Vehicle Technology Requirements session and three working panels: Materials and Structures Technologies for Vehicle Systems; Propulsion Systems; and Entry Systems. The goals accomplished were (1) to develop important strategic planning information necessary to transition materials and structures technologies from lab research programs into robust and affordable operational systems; (2) to provide a forum for the exchange of information and ideas between technology developers and users; and (3) to provide senior NASA management with a review of current space transportation programs, related subjects, and specific technology needs. The workshop thus provided a foundation on which a NASA and industry effort to address space transportation materials and structures technologies can grow

Problems in the Insulin Dependent Diabetic

It is often useful for the physician to classify diabetes as stable or unstable. Maturity-onset diabetes is usually stable, and its management is not difficult, provided the patient is interested and cooperative. Tendency to obesity, relative insensitivity to insulin, and absence of ketosis are characteristic of such patients. Relative insensitivity to insulin does not imply unresponsiveness, but rather that the blood sugar is not overly labile and does not fall sharply in response to exercise or injected insulin. Many patients with such insensitivity to insulin are adequately managed on diet, alone or in combination with the oral hypoglycemic agents. When the latter fail, usually a single morning dose of long-acting insulin is satisfactory in controlling glycosuria and hyperglycemia during a 24-hour interval. Occasionally a small dose of crystalline insulin given in the same injection will be needed to control glycosuria between breakfast and lunch

A Predator-Prey Model with an Application to Lake Victoria Fisheries

Greater complexity in renewable resource models is achieved by acknowledging that species interact through a predator-prey relationship in which both species are harvested. The price of greater complexity is that traditional concepts, such as maximum sustained yield (MSY), have to be revised dramatically. Moreover, having chosen greater complexity, fishery biologists and other researchers must choose an explicit value for each fish, a rate of exchange of one species for every other species. Policy makers and social scientists in Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda with a keen interest in Lake Victoria fisheries regard the resource as a tool for furthering socioeconomic goals, such as foreign exchange earnings, employment for women, and nutrition. Comparative analysis allows policy makers to understand the consequences of choosing these goals in addition to economically efficient resource use. Foreign exchange earnings, employment for women, and healthy people are other goals promulgated by Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda in the management of Lake Victoria Fisheries. The conflicts among social goals are evident in the bioeconomic predator-prey model: a goal favoring a particular species reduces the sustainable harvest of another species. Data from Kenya are used to estimate the population dynamics equations.predator-prey, bioeconomic model, Lake Victoria, Resource /Energy Economics and Policy, Q22, Q28,

Underground Storage Tanks: A Lawyer\u27s Guide to Recent Federal and North Carolina Legislation

    Get PDF
This Comment focuses on what is already a common problem facing attorneys and their clients who own underground storage tanks (USTSs). That problem, from the client\u27s perspective, is, What am I supposed to do? There are a multitude of USTs in the United States. Many of these underground tanks contain petroleum. Often these tanks are located at mom and pop gas stations. This Comment focuses on the requirements a commercial gas station owner must follow in the operation of underground storage tanks. This Comment also provides sample lease provisions for the owner of an UST who leases the premises to the operator of the facility. This Comment also focuses on the immediate concerns of owners and operators of existing USTs, and the requirements they must meet in order to comply with the regulations
