    Discovery of Blue Hook Stars in the Massive Globular Cluster M54

    We present BV photometry centered on the globular cluster M54 (NGC 6715). The color-magnitude diagram clearly shows a blue horizontal branch extending anomalously beyond the zero age horizontal branch theoretical models. These kinds of horizontal branch stars (also called ``blue hook'' stars), which go beyond the lower limit of the envelope mass of canonical horizontal branch hot stars, have so far been known to exist in only a few globular clusters: NGC 2808, Omega Centauri (NGC 5139), NGC 6273, and NGC 6388. Those clusters, like M54, are among the most luminous in our Galaxy, indicating a possible correlation between the existence of these types of horizontal branch stars and the total mass of the cluster. A gap in the observed horizontal branch of M54 around T(eff)= 27000 K could be interpreted within the late helium flash theoretical scenario, a possible explanation for the origin of those stars.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa

    The nature of the Lambda(1405)

    We present here some results supporting the nature of the Λ(1405)\Lambda(1405) resonance as dynamically generated from the meson baryon interaction in coupled channels and resulting from the superposition of two close-by poles. We find support for this picture in the Kpπ0π0Σ0K^- p \to \pi^0 \pi^0 \Sigma^0 reaction, which shows a different shape than the one obtained from the πpK0πΣ\pi ^- p \to K^0 \pi \Sigma reaction. We also call the attention to the KpγπΣK^- p \to \gamma \pi \Sigma with πΣ\pi \Sigma in the Λ(1405)\Lambda(1405) region, which shows a narrow peak in the calculations around 1420 MeV. We also report on recent calculations of the radiative decay of the two Λ(1405)\Lambda(1405) states and on reactions to obtain information on these decay modes. Finally, we present results for the pppK+Λ(1405)pp\to p K^+\Lambda(1405) reaction recently measured at ANKE/COSY and compare them with theoretical results.Comment: Talk given at the NSTAR2007 Workshop, Bonn September 200

    Alterations in Wnt- and/or STAT3 signaling pathways and the immune microenvironment during metastatic progression

    Metastatic breast cancer is an extremely complex disease with limited treatment options due to the lack of information about the major characteristics of metastatic disease. There is an urgent need, therefore, to understand the changes in cellular complexity and dynamics that occur during metastatic progression. In the current study, we analyzed the cellular and molecular differences between primary tumors and paired lung metastases using a syngeneic p53-null mammary tumor model of basal-like breast cancer. Distinct subpopulations driven by the Wnt- and/or STAT3 signaling pathways were detected in vivo using a lentiviral Wnt- and STAT3 signaling reporter system. A significant increase in the overlapping populations driven by both the Wnt- and STAT3 signaling pathways was observed in the lung metastases as compared to the primary tumors. Furthermore, the overlapping populations showed a higher metastatic potential relative to the other populations and pharmacological inhibition of both signaling pathways was shown to markedly reduce the metastatic lesions in established lung metastases. An analysis of the unique molecular features of the lung metastases revealed a significant association with immune response signatures. Specifically, Foxp3 gene expression was markedly increased and elevated levels of Foxp3 + Treg cells were detected in close proximity to lung metastases. Collectively, these studies illustrate the importance of analyzing intratumoral heterogeneity, changes in population dynamics, and the immune microenvironment during metastatic progression

    The role of the Λ(1405)\Lambda(1405) in the pppK+Λ(1405)pp\to p K^+\Lambda(1405) reaction

    We report a theoretical study of the pppK+Λ(1405)pp\to p K^+\Lambda(1405) reaction, which was recently investigated at COSY-J\"{u}lich by using a 3.65 GeV/c circulating proton beam incident on an internal hydrogen target. The reaction is driven by single kaon exchange, single pion exchange, and single rho exchange terms which have very different shapes due to the two pole structure of the Λ(1405)\Lambda(1405) and the presence of background terms. The shape for the sum of the three contributions, as well as the total cross section, are consistent with present data within experimental and theoretical uncertainties, using reasonable form factors for the meson-baryon vertices.Comment: version to appear in European Physical Journal A; theoretical uncertainties reanalyzed, data updated according to the experimen

    Effects of pseudoscalar-baryon channels in the dynamically generated vector-baryon resonances

    We study the interaction of vector mesons with the octet of stable baryons in the framework of the local hidden gauge formalism using a coupled channels unitary approach, including also the pseudoscalar-baryon channels which couple to the same quantum numbers. We examine the scattering amplitudes and their poles, which can be associated to known JP=1/2,3/2J^P=1/2^-,3/2^- baryon resonances, and determine the role of the pseudoscalar-baryon channels, changing the width and eventually the mass of the resonances generated with only the basis of vector-baryon states

    The radiative decay of the Λ(1405)\Lambda(1405) and its two-pole structure

    We evaluate theoretically the radiative decay widths into γΛ\gamma\Lambda and γΣ0\gamma\Sigma^0 of the two poles of the Λ(1405)\Lambda(1405) found in chiral unitary theories and we find quite different results for each of the two poles. We show that, depending on which reaction is used to measure the Λ(1405)\Lambda(1405) radiative decays, one gives more weight to one or the other pole, resulting in quite different shapes in the γΛ(Σ0)\gamma\Lambda(\Sigma^0) invariant mass distributions. Our results for the high-energy pole agree with those of the empirical determination of the γΛ\gamma\Lambda and γΣ0\gamma\Sigma^0 radiative widths (based on an isobar model fitting of the KpK^-p atom data), which are sometimes referred to as ``experimental data''. We have made a detailed study of the Kpπ0γΛ(Σ0)K^-p\to\pi^0\gamma\Lambda(\Sigma^0) and πpK0γΛ(Σ0)\pi^-p\to K^0\gamma\Lambda(\Sigma^0) reactions and have shown that they, indeed, lead to different shapes for the γΛ(Σ0)\gamma\Lambda(\Sigma^0) invariant mass distributions.Comment: Version to appear in European Physical Journal A; a brief description of the chiral unitary coupled-channel approach adde

    Photo- and Electron-Production of Mesons on Nucleons and Nuclei

    In these lectures I will show some results obtained with the chiral unitary approach applied to the photo and electroproduction of mesons. The results for photoproduction of ηπ0p\eta \pi^0 p and K0π0Σ+K^0 \pi^0 \Sigma^+, together with related reactions will be shown, having with common denominator the excitation of the Δ(1700)\Delta(1700) resonance which is one of those dynamically generated in the chiral unitary approach. Then I will show results obtained for the e+eϕf0(980)e^+ e^- \to \phi f_0(980) reaction which reproduce the bulk of the data except for a pronounced peak, giving support to a new mesonic resonance, X(2175). Results will also be shown for the electromagnetic form factors of the N(1535)N^*(1535) resonance, also dynamically generated in this approach. Finally, I will show some results on the photoproduction of the ω\omega in nuclei, showing that present experimental results claiming a shift of the ω\omega mass in the medium are tied to a particular choice of background and are not conclusive.     Self-consistent anisotropic oscillator with cranked angular and vortex velocities

    The Kelvin circulation is the kinematical Hermitian observable that measures the true character of nuclear rotation. For the anisotropic oscillator, mean field solutions with fixed angular momentum and Kelvin circulation are derived in analytic form. The cranking Lagrange multipliers corresponding to the two constraints are the angular and vortex velocities.     DN interaction from meson exchange

    A model of the DN interaction is presented which is developed in close analogy to the meson-exchange KbarN potential of the Juelich group utilizing SU(4) symmetry constraints. The main ingredients of the interaction are provided by vector meson (rho, omega) exchange and higher-order box diagrams involving D*N, D\Delta, and D*\Delta intermediate states. The coupling of DN to the pi-Lambda_c and pi-Sigma_c channels is taken into account. The interaction model generates the Lambda_c(2595) resonance dynamically as a DN quasi-bound state. Results for DN total and differential cross sections are presented and compared with predictions of an interaction model that is based on the leading-order Weinberg-Tomozawa term. Some features of the Lambda_c(2595) resonance are discussed and the role of the near-by pi-Sigma_c threshold is emphasized. Selected predictions of the orginal KbarN model are reported too. Specifically, it is pointed out that the model generates two poles in the partial wave corresponding to the Lambda(1405) resonance.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figure
