Leptonic CP violating effective action for Dirac and Majorana neutrinos

    Get PDF
In the Standard Model minimally extended to include massive neutrinos, we compute the leading CP-violating zero temperature contributions to the one-loop effective action induced by integration of the leptons. Such contributions start at operators of dimension six and they are P even for Dirac neutrinos and P even or odd for Majorana neutrinos. Dimension four operators are allowed in the mixed Dirac-Majorana case. It is verified by explicit calculation that CP can be violated in two generation settings for Majorana neutrinos. Using different neutrino scenarios we give upper bounds for the couplings of the CP-violating operators. As a rule, we find that lepton-induced couplings are suppressed as compared to quark-induced couplings, whenever the latter are allowed, nevertheless, through virtual lepton-number violating mechanisms, Majorana neutrinos induce new CP-violating operators not present in the quark or Dirac-neutrino cases.Comment: 47 pages, 4 figure

The Picard Group of Brauer-Severi Varieties

In this note we provide explicit generators of the Picard groups of cyclic Brauer-Severi varieties defined over the base field. In particular, for all Brauer-Severi surfaces. To produce these generators we use the Twisting Theory for smooth plane curves

The role of Intellectual Capital Reporting (ICR) in organisational transformation: A discursive practice perspective

Intellectual Capital Reporting (ICR) has garnered increasing attention as a new accounting technology that can engender significant organisational changes. However, when ICR was first recognised as a management fashion, the intended change it heralded in stable environments was criticised for having limited impact on the state of practice. Conceiving ICR through a lens predicated on the notion of discursive practice, we argue that ICR can enable substantive change in emergent conditions. We empirically demonstrate this process by following the implementation of ICR in one organisation through interviews, documents and observations over 30 months. The qualitative analysis of the data corpus shows how situated change, subtle but no less significant, can take place in the name of intellectual capital as actors appropriate ICR into their everyday work practices while improvising variations to accommodate different logics of action. The paper opens up a new avenue to examine the specific roles of ICR in relation to the types of change enacted. It thus demonstrates when and how ICR may transcend a mere management fashion and the intended change it sets in motion through altering organisational actors’ ways of thinking and doing within the confines of their organisation

Nonpharmacological Interventions as an Adjunct Therapy for the Treatment of Elderly Patients with Postoperative Delirium

Background: Postoperative delirium is an iatrogenic disease that largely affects older surgical patients. Current treatment relies mostly on pharmacological management. However, this poses a problem due to the age-related changes in elders on drug metabolism. Other comorbidities increase chances of onset of postoperative delirium, and the possibility of unresolved cases. This leads to prolonged hospital stays, decreased quality of life, and overall poorer outcomes in these individuals. Objective: The purpose of this literature review and proposal is to examine the use of non-pharmacological therapy as an adjunct treatment to improve outcomes in elderly patients diagnosed with postoperative delirium. Non-pharmacological interventions observed are focused on stress management and activities of daily living (ADL) training. The literature review summarizes eight studies and are organized based on outcomes, pharmacological, and nonpharmacological treatments. Method: This paper proposes a controlled, randomized experimental trial that divides participants into a control group, meditation group, and ADL group. It will then compare initial and post-test scores of the initial, three-month, and six-month test scores with an ANOVA test. The tests that are going to be used for this proposal are the Confusion Assessment Method-Severity (CAM-S) (as cited in Seiber et al, 2019) and the Mini Mental Status Exam (MMSE) (as cited in Seiber et al, 2019). Scores will be broken down for individuals as well as groups. Group scores will then be compared to one another. Ethical considerations are concerned with informed consent in confused individuals and travel detriments imposed by this proposal
