    Comparison of nitrification inhibitors to restrict nitrate leaching in a maize crop irrigated under mediterranean conditions

    The aim of this paper was to compare dicyandiamide (DCD) and 3,4 dimethylpyrazole phosphate (DMPP) as inhibitors of ammonium oxidation and nitrate leaching after applying fertilizer to a maize (Zea mays L.) crop grown under Mediterranean conditions. The effects of nitrification inhibitors were also compared to those of N fertilization without inhibitors and with split N application. In plots fertilized with ammonium sulphate nitrate (ASN), either DCD or DMPP lengthened ammonium presence in soil and produced lower soil NO3- concentrations (30% lower than in plots with no inhibitor). The use of DCD or DMPP achieved significant reductions in nitrate leaching. DCD showed excellent properties for controlling nitrate leaching, taking into account the fact that grain yield and N accumulated by plant were similar for the ASN-DCD and ASN treatments applied at the same N doses. The split N treatment did not offer any advantages in terms of leached nitrate, either with the use of single ammonium sulphate nitrate (ASN) or with single application of nitrification inhibitors. The nitrification inhibitors did not increase the yield but did not reduce it either. The drainage rate was the most important component of nitrate leaching. The low drainage values of the first year resulted in a sharp decline of nitrate leaching. However, the experiment of the second year, showed clear differences in nitrate leaching between treatments due to the greater drainage

    Near-Field Fluorescence Imaging of Genetic Material: Toward the Molecular Limit

    Chromosomes, DNA, and single fluorescent molecules are studied using an aperture-type near-held scanning optical microscope with tuning fork shear force feedback. Fluorescence in situ hybridization labels o­n repetitive and single copy probes o­n human metaphase chromosomes are imaged with a width of 80 nm, allowing their localization with nanometer accuracy, in direct correlation with the simultaneously obtained topography. Single fluorophores, both in polymer and covalently attached to amino- silanized glass, are imaged using two-channel fluorescence polarization detection. The molecules are selectively excited according to their dipole orientation. The orientation of the dipole moment of all molecules in o­ne image could be directly determined. Rotational dynamics o­n a 10-ms to 100-s timescale is observed. Finally, shear force imaging of double-stranded DNA with a vertical sensitivity of 0.2 nm is presented. A DNA height of 1.4 nm is measured, which indicates the nondisturbing character of the shear force mechanism

    Hybrid Heuristics for the Linear Ordering Problem

    The linear ordering problem (LOP) is one of the classical NP-Hard combinatorial optimization problems. Motivated by the difficulty of solving it up to optimality, in recent decades a great number of heuristic and meta-heuristic algorithms have been proposed. Despite the continuous work on this problem, there is still room nowadays for designing strategies that beat the state-of-the-art algorithms, and take a step forward in terms of the quality of the obtained solutions.In this paper, two novel schemes are presented. The first algorithm consists of an iterated local search algorithm that carries out an organized exploration of the search space. The second scheme is an extension of the previous algorithm that, based on the properties of the LOP, proposes an exact procedure that allows us to improve the quality of the solutions systematically. Conducted experiments on one of the hardest LOP benchmarks (xLOLIB) show that 77 new best results were found out of 78 instances. The described strategies also provide innovative ideas for developing more advanced algorithms for solving the LOP

    One-Dimensional Control System for a Linear Motor of a Two-Dimensional Nanopositioning Stage Using Commercial Control Hardware

    A two-dimensional (2D) nanopositioning platform stage (NanoPla) is in development at the University of Zaragoza. To provide a long travel range, the actuators of the NanoPla are four Halbach linear motors. These motors present many advantages in precision engineering, and they are custom made for this application. In this work, a one-dimensional (1D) control strategy for positioning a Halbach linear motor has been developed, implemented, and experimentally validated. The chosen control hardware is a commercial Digital Motor Control (DMC) Kit from Texas Instruments that has been designed to control the torque or the rotational speed of rotative motors. Using a commercial control hardware facilitates the applicability of the developed control system. Nevertheless, it constrains the design, which needs to be adapted to the hardware and optimized. Firstly, a dynamic characterization of the linear motor has been performed. By leveraging the dynamic properties of the motor, a sensorless controller is proposed. Then, a closed-loop control strategy is developed. Finally, this control strategy is implemented in the control hardware. It was verified that the control system achieves the working requirements of the NanoPla. It is able to work in a range of 50 mm and perform a minimum incremental motion of 1 mu m

    Monitoring of climate variables in semi-closed greenhouses

    Growers and Dutch government have concluded a covenant in which they express the ambition to reduce the carbon footprint of greenhouse production in order to improve the energy neutrality of newly built greenhouses. Conditioned cultivation in (semi-)closed greenhouses is seen as one of the instruments to reach this goal. It is appointed in the covenant to arrive in 2011 at 700 ha and in 2020 at 2,500 ha semi-closed greenhouses. This paper describes the instruments used to monitor the results of conditioned cultivation in eight semi-closed greenhouses in practice. It addresses the monitoring process, the installations involved and highlights some of the measured data

    Chagas disease reactivation in a heart transplant patient infected by domestic Trypanosoma cruzi discrete typing unit I (TcIDOM)

    Background Trypanosoma cruzi, causative agent of Chagas disease, displays high intraspecific genetic diversity: six genetic lineages or discrete typing units (DTUs) are currently recognized, termed TcI through TcVI. Each DTU presents a particular distribution pattern across the Americas, and is loosely associated with different transmission cycles and hosts. Several DTUs are known to circulate in Central America. It has been previously suggested that TcI infection is benign and does not lead to chronic chagasic cardiomyopathy (CCC). Findings In this study, we genotyped T. cruzi parasites circulating in the blood and from explanted cardiac tissue of an El Salvadorian patient who developed reactivation Chagas disease while on immunosuppressive medications after undergoing heart transplant in the U.S. as treatment for end-stage CCC. Parasite typing was performed through molecular methods (restriction fragment length polymorphism of polymerase reaction chain amplified products, microsatellite typing, maxicircle sequence typing and low-stringency single primer PCR, [LSSP-PCR]) as well as lineage-specific serology. We show that the parasites infecting the patient belong to the TcI DTU exclusively. Our data indicate that the parasites isolated from the patient belong to a genotype frequently associated with human infection throughout the Americas (TcI DOM ). Conclusions Our results constitute compelling evidence in support of TcI DTU’s ability to cause end-stage CCC and help dispel any residual bias that infection with this lineage is benign, pointing to the need for increased surveillance for dissemination of this genotype in endemic regions, the USA and globally
