    Observation of a Griffiths-like phase in the paramagnetic regime of ErCo_2

    A systematic x-ray magnetic circular dichroism study of the paramagnetic phase of ErCo2 has recently allowed to identify the inversion of the net magnetization of the Co net moment with respect to the applied field well above the ferrimagnetic ordering temperature, Tc. The study of small angle neutron scattering measurements has also shown the presence of short range order correlations in the same temperature region. This phenomenon, which we have denoted parimagnetism, may be related with the onset of a Griffiths-like phase in paramagnetic ErCo2. We have measured ac susceptibility on ErCo2 as a function of temperature, applied field, and excitation frequency. Several characteristics shared by systems showing a Griffiths phase are present in ErCo2, namely the formation of ferromagnetic clusters in the disordered phase, the loss of analyticity of the magnetic susceptibility and its extreme sensitivity to an applied magnetic field. The paramagnetic susceptibility allows to establish that the magnetic clusters are only formed by Co moments as well as the intrinsic nature of those Co moments

    Integration of unaccompanied migrant youth in the United States: a call for research

    Between October 2013 and July 2016, over 156,000 children travelling without their guardians were apprehended at the U.S.–Mexico border and transferred to the care of the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR). During that same period, ORR placed over 123,000 unaccompanied migrant youth – predominantly from Central America – with a parent or other adult sponsor residing in the U.S. Following placement, local communities are tasked with integrating migrant youth, many of whom experience pre- and in-transit migration traumas, family separation, limited/interrupted schooling, and unauthorised legal status, placing them at heightened risk for psychological distress, academic disengagement, maltreatment, and human trafficking. Nonetheless, fewer than 10% of young people receive formal post-release services (PRS). This paper addresses the paucity of research on the experiences of the 90% of children and youth without access to PRS. To bridge this gap, this article: (a) describes the post-release experiences of unaccompanied youth, focusing on legal, family, health, and educational contexts; (b) identifies methodological and ethical challenges and solutions in conducting research with this population of young people and their families; and (c) proposes research to identify structural challenges to the provision of services and to inform best practices in support of unaccompanied youth

    LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 Thin Films Grown by Magnetron Sputtering under Inert Gas Flow Mixtures as High-Voltage Cathode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries

    Delivering a commercial high-voltage spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) cathode electrode for Li-ion batteries would result in a significant step forward in terms of energy density. However, the structural ordering of the spinel and particle size have considerable effects on the cathode material's cyclability and rate capability, which are crucial challenges to address. Here, a novel mid-frequency alternating current dual magnetron sputtering method was presented, using different Ar-N-2 gas mixtures ratios for the process gas to prepare various LNMO thin films with highly controlled morphology and particle size; as determined from X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and electron microscopy. It resulted in enhanced cycling and rate performance. This processing method delivered N-containing LNMO thin film electrodes with up to 15 % increased discharge capacity at 1 C (120 mAh g(-1)) with respect to standard LNMO (grown under only Ar gas flow) thin film electrodes, along with outstanding rate performance up to 10 C (99 mAh g(-1)) in the operating voltage window 3.5-4.85 V vs. Li+/Li. Besides, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results showed that the intricate phase transitions present in standard LNMO electrodes were almost suppressed in N-containing LNMO thin films grown under different Ar-N-2 gas flow mixtures

    Anisotropic Superparamagnetism of Monodispersive Cobalt-Platinum Nanocrystals

    Based on the high-temperature organometallic route (Sun et al. Science 287, 1989 (2000)), we have synthesized powders containing CoPt_3 single crystals with mean diameters of 3.3(2) nm and 6.0(2) nm and small log-normal widths sigma=0.15(1). In the entire temperature range from 5 K to 400 K, the zero-field cooled susceptibility chi(T) displays significant deviations from ideal superparamagnetism. Approaching the Curie temperature of 450(10) K, the deviations arise from the (mean-field) type reduction of the ferromagnetic moments, while below the blocking temperature T_b, chi(T) is suppressed by the presence of energy barriers, the distributions of which scale with the particle volumes obtained from transmission electron microscopy (TEM). This indication for volume anisotropy is supported by scaling analyses of the shape of the magnetic absorption chi''(T,omega) which reveal distribution functions for the barriers being also consistent with the volume distributions observed by TEM. Above 200 K, the magnetization isotherms M(H,T) display Langevin behavior providing 2.5(1) mu_B per CoPt_3 in agreement with reports on bulk and thin film CoPt_3. The non-Langevin shape of the magnetization curves at lower temperatures is for the first time interpreted as anisotropic superparamagnetism by taking into account an anisotropy energy of the nanoparticles E_A(T). Using the magnitude and temperature variation of E_A(T), the mean energy barriers and 'unphysical' small switching times of the particles obtained from the analyses of chi''(T,omega) are explained. Below T_b hysteresis loops appear and are quantitatively described by a blocking model, which also ignores particle interactions, but takes the size distributions from TEM and the conventional field dependence of E_A into account.Comment: 12 pages with 10 figures and 1 table.     SUSY Quivers, Intersecting Branes and the Modest Hierarchy Problem

    We present a class of chiral non-supersymmetric D=4 field theories in which quadratic divergences appear only at two loops. They may be depicted as ``SUSY quivers'' in which the nodes represent a gauge group with extended e.g., N=4 SUSY whereas links represent bifundamental matter fields which transform as chiral multiplets with respect to different N=1 subgroups. One can obtain this type of field theories from simple D6-brane configurations on Type IIA string theory compactified on a six-torus. We discuss the conditions under which this kind of structure is obtained from D6-brane intersections. We also discuss some aspects of the effective low-energy field theory. In particular we compute gauge couplings and Fayet-Iliopoulos terms from the Born-Infeld action and show how they match the field theory results. This class of theories may be of phenomenological interest in order to understand the modest hierarchy problem i.e., the stability of the hierarchy between the weak scale and a fundamental scale of order 10-100 TeV which appears e.g. in low string scale models.     Global ecological predictors of the soil priming effect

    Identifying the global drivers of soil priming is essential to understanding C cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. We conducted a survey of soils across 86 globally-distributed locations, spanning a wide range of climates, biotic communities, and soil conditions, and evaluated the apparent soil priming effect using 13C-glucose labeling. Here we show that the magnitude of the positive apparent priming effect (increase in CO2 release through accelerated microbial biomass turnover) was negatively associated with SOC content and microbial respiration rates. Our statistical modeling suggests that apparent priming effects tend to be negative in more mesic sites associated with higher SOC contents. In contrast, a single-input of labile C causes positive apparent priming effects in more arid locations with low SOC contents. Our results provide solid evidence that SOC content plays a critical role in regulating apparent priming effects, with important implications for the improvement of C cycling models under global change scenarios

    Highlights from the Pierre Auger Observatory

    The Pierre Auger Observatory is the world's largest cosmic ray observatory. Our current exposure reaches nearly 40,000 km2^2 str and provides us with an unprecedented quality data set. The performance and stability of the detectors and their enhancements are described. Data analyses have led to a number of major breakthroughs. Among these we discuss the energy spectrum and the searches for large-scale anisotropies. We present analyses of our Xmax_{max} data and show how it can be interpreted in terms of mass composition. We also describe some new analyses that extract mass sensitive parameters from the 100% duty cycle SD data. A coherent interpretation of all these recent results opens new directions.
