In this work we present an educational experience developed with the teaching method based on the case method, with a clearly multidisciplinary. The experience has been developed in the teaching of analysis and verification of safety rails. This is a multidisciplinary field that presents great difficulties during their teaching.     Effects of Gabaergic phenols on phospholipid bilayers as evaluated by 1H-NMR

    The phenols propofol and thymol, and lately carvacrol, eugenol and chlorothymol, have been shown to act as positive allosteric modulators on GABAA receptor, which is the main inhibitory receptor of the central nervous system. GABAA receptor is an intrinsic membrane protein which activity may be affected by surface-active compounds and by physical changes in the membrane. Recently, we demonstrated that these phenols interacted with the lipid membrane phase, suggesting their anesthetic activity could be the combined result of their specific (with receptor proteins) as well as nonspecific (with surrounding lipid molecules) interaction modulating the supramolecular organization of the receptor environment. In the current study, by using 1H-NMR spectroscopy, we have investigated the effects of the insertion and the possible preferential location of the five phenol derivatives with GABAergic activity on EPC membranes. The results indicate that all compounds are able to insert in EPC phospholipid vesicles and to locate in the region between the polar group (choline molecule), the glycerol and the first atoms of the acyl chains, being the more lipophilic compounds (propofol and chlorothymol) that seem to prefer a deeper bilayer insertion. The location of the phenol molecules would reduce the repulsive forces among phospholipids head groups allowing closer molecular packing and finally diminishing the mobility of the hydrocarbon chains, as revealed by 1H spin relaxation times.Fil: Reiner, Gabriela de Las Nieves.     El refuerzo de forjados de madera mediante la conexión de una losa de hormigón superior es una técnica ampliamente utilizada en el sector de la rehabilitación de edificios antiguos. Sin embargo, la experiencia muestra que el análisis estructural de estos tipos de refuerzos se realiza en muchas ocasiones de una manera empírica, sin aportar justificaciones numéricas, sobre todo en dos cuestiones: el análisis de la resistencia de los elementos de madera y el cálculo de la conexión.     Physics and Mathematics in the Engineering Curriculum: Correlation with Applied Subjects

    This paper presents a study in which the relationship between basic subjects (Mathematics and Physics) and applied engineering subjects (related to Machinery, Electrical Engineering, Topography and Buildings) in higher engineering education curricula is evaluated. The analysis has been conducted using the academic records of 206 students for five years. Furthermore, 34 surveys and personal interviews were conducted to analyze the connections between the contents taught in each subject and to identify student perceptions of the correlation with other subjects or disciplines. At the same time, the content of the different subjects have been analyzed to verify the relationship among the disciplines.Aproper coordination among subjects will allow students to relate and interconnect topics of different subjects, even with the ones learnt in previous courses, while also helping to reduce dropout rates and student failures in successfully accomplishing the different courses

    Staple crops biofortified with increased vitamins and minerals : considerations for a public health strategy

    Biofortification of staple crops has been proposed as a strategy to address micronutrient malnutrition, particularly with respect to insufficient intake of vitamin A, iron, zinc, and folate. The World Health Organization, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science at the New York Academy of Sciences, convened a technical consultation entitled "Staple Crops Biofortified with Vitamins and Minerals: Considerations for a Public Health Strategy" in April 2016. Participants of the consultation reviewed the definition of biofortification of staple crops, patterns of crops production, processing, consumption, seed varieties, and micronutrient stability and bioavailability, as well as farmers' adoption and acceptability of the modified crops. Also discussed were economic, environmental, safety, and equity aspects of biofortified crops, as well as legal, policy, regulatory, and ethical issues for the implementation of biofortification strategies in agriculture and nutrition. Consultation working groups identified important and emerging technical issues, lessons learned, and research priorities to better support the evidence of improved nutrition and unintended adverse effects of biofortification. This paper provides the background and rationale of the technical consultation, synopsizes the presentations, and provides a summary of the main considerations proposed by the working groups

    Zero-Risk Interpretation in the Level of Preventive Action Method Implementation for Health and Safety in Construction Sites

    Risk assessment is a legal obligation for all companies in most countries worldwide. It aims to control the quality of working conditions and avoid externalizing the consequences of accidents and resulting costs to society. This work discusses the need for an adequate interpretation of the zero-risk concept from a technical-preventive perspective to assess occupational risks in construction sites. A critical analysis of several risk assessment methodologies was carried out, focusing on the evaluation criteria of little or no-risk situations. The verification of the results was made through a case study. The perception of health and safety risks by workers is very different from that of the evaluators. Often, when workers identify a situation as low-risk or even zero-risk, the evaluator assesses the same context as maximum risk. Given the workers' and the evaluators' responses, the Preventive Action Method establishes a new parameter, the Environment Congruence. This parameter is based on the perception of the preventive environment and gives more importance to the evaluators' decision. When preventive action is optimal, the risk is low in all preventive observation settings. In conclusion, this study justifies the non-nullity of the risk and the difficulty of assessing zero-risk in construction sites. Therefore, evaluations with qualitative and quantitative non-risk approaches should be discarded

    Current calcium fortification experiences: a review

    Low dietary calcium is very common in many populations, contributing to nutritional rickets/osteomalacia in children/adults and increasing the risk of several health problems. Calcium is a nutrient of concern as the recommended nutrient requirements are difficult to meet in the absence of dairy products. The provision of culturally acceptable calcium-fortified foods may improve calcium intake when it is a feasible and cost-effective strategy in a particular setting. This landscape review was conducted in 2019 and describes current calcium fortification efforts and lessons learned from these experiences. Worldwide, the United Kingdom is the only country where calcium fortification of wheat flour is mandatory. It is estimated that this fortified staple ingredient contributes to 13–14% of calcium intake of the British population. Other items voluntary fortified with calcium include maize flour, rice, and water. Current calcium fortification programs may lack qualified personnel/training, clear guidelines on implementation, regulation, monitoring/evaluation, and functional indicators. Also, the cost of calcium premix is high and the target groups may be hard to reach. There is a lack of rigorous evaluation, particularly in settings with multiple micronutrient programs implemented simultaneously, with low quality of the evidence.     Calcium‐fortified foods in public health programs: considerations for implementation

    Low calcium intake is common worldwide and can result in nutritional rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults. Calcium-fortified foods could improve calcium intake. However, there is limited calcium fortification experience, with technical and practical issues that may hamper its adoption. The objective of this landscape review is to summarize these issues to help policymakers guide the planning and design of calcium fortification as a public health strategy. One challenge is the low bioavailability of calcium salts (∼20–40%); thus, large amounts need to be added to food to have a meaningful impact. Solubility is important when fortifying liquids and acidic foods. Calcium salts could change the flavor, color, and appearance of the food and may account for 70–90% of the total fortification cost. Safety is key to avoid exceeding the recommended intake; so the amount of added calcium should be based on the target calcium intake and the gap between inadequate and adequate levels. Monitoring includes the quality of the fortified food and population calcium intake using dietary assessment methods. Calcium fortification should follow regulations, implemented in an intersectorial way, and be informed by the right to health and equity.
