An infra-red finger tracking system used in the assessment and remediation of “graph-as-picture” misconceptions
The workshop presentation will describe a specialized ap- plication of Lee’s “Wiimote Whiteboard” [7] an infra-red camera based tracking system which uses the Nintendo Wii wireless remote control unit and Bluetooth. Young students wear a very small infra-red LED on their index finger with a forefinger/thumb operated micro-switch for produ- cing “mouse clicks”. This system is combined with a vertically mounted data projector or a horizontally mounted regular computer LCD display, creating a cost-effective large interactive touch surface. The system has a fast response time and has been used with primary school students in diagrammatic knowledge (graphicacy) assessment [4] and in interactive dynalinked diagrammatic applications [5]. These applications were de- signed to investigate the “graph-as-picture” misconception and they will be described and demonstrated at the workshop
Removal of Arsenic (Iii) and Arsenic (V) from Aqueous Solution via Solanum lycopersicum Phytoremediation and Essential Nutrient Analysis
ICP-OES was used to investigate the uptake of arsenic (V) and arsenic (III) from aqueous solution using tomato seedlings. The effect of arsenic on essential nutrient uptake by tomato was analyzed. The experiment was performed at three levels of arsenic: 1ppm, 2 ppm and 5 ppm [added as sodium arsenate (Na3AsO4) and arsenic trioxide (As2O3)], in nutrient solution. Plants remained in solution for two weeks. Arsenic accumulation depended on arsenic concentration in solution, when exposed to higher arsenic concentrations the plant uptake increased. The highest arsenic accumulation was found in roots, followed by stems and leaves in that order. Essential nutrient uptake decreased from control values when plants were exposed to low arsenic levels (1ppm) and increased at high arsenic concentrations (2 ppm and 5 ppm). The arsenite level of 5 ppm damaged roots membranes decreasing arsenic and essential nutrient uptake

Multi-touch Interaction Data Analysis System (MIDAS) for 2-D tactile display research
The study of haptic perception and cognition requires data about how humans interact with tactile surfaces in the context of performing cognitive tasks. MIDAS is a set of three tools for the digital capture, coding, analysis, and interpretation of timeseries, multitouch, interactive behaviors on a tactile surface. The MIDAS-logger uses the current screen technology of tablet computers to capture touches (up to ten fingers at high spatial and temporal resolution) through conventional tactile graphics that are overlaid on the screen. The MIDAS-analyser is a software program for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of MIDASlogger touch data, which includes a fully interactive visualization of the data and a yoked display of a conventional simultaneous video recording made of the interactions. MIDAS-tactile protocol analysis (TPA) provides a scheme and a method to enable the rich coding and interpretation of tactile behaviors over multiple spatial and temporal scales. The efficacy of MIDAS was assessed against a set of criteria drawn from the successes and limitations of prior approaches to the study of tactile interactions. To demonstrate the functions of MIDAS, its three components were used to capture, analyze, code, and interpret the behavior of an experienced user and an inexperienced user of tactile graphics as they performed a shape-matching task

Nativity and Country of Origin Variations in Life Expectancy With Functional Limitations Among Older Hispanics in the United States
This study examined racial/ethnic, nativity, and country of origin differences in life expectancy with and without functional limitations among older adults in the United States. We used data from the National Health Interview Survey (1999–2015) to estimate Sullivan-based life tables of life expectancies with functional limitations and without functional limitations by sex for U.S.-born Mexicans, foreign-born Mexicans, U.S.-born Puerto Ricans, island-born Puerto Ricans, foreign-born Cubans, and U.S.-born Whites. We find that Latinos exhibit heterogeneous life expectancies with functional limitations. Among females, U.S.-born Mexicans, foreign-born Mexicans, and foreign-born Cubans spend significantly fewer years without functional limitations, whereas island-born Puerto Ricans spend more years with functional limitations. For men, U.S.-born Puerto Ricans were the only Latino subgroup disadvantaged in the number of years lived with functional limitations. Conversely, foreign-born Cubans spend significantly fewer years without functional limitations. To address disparities in functional limitations, we must consider variation in health among Latino subgroups

Cognitive analysis for representation change
The rep2rep project is developing an AI tool to automatically select an appropriate representation to solve a particular problem for a particular person. A prerequisite of this tool is to understand (i.e., model) how a reader interprets a representation. But interpretations can vary wildly between novices and experts, readers of similar ability, or even the same reader in different tasks. We present a theory and notation (RIST and RISN) for analysing the cognitive features of a representation's interpretation, and introduce a web app to construct RISN models. These models provide information about cognitive properties of representations to guide automated representation selection to support human problem solving

Oruga: an avatar of representational systems theory
Humans use representations flexibly. We draw diagrams, change representations and exploit creative analogies across different domains. We want to harness this kind of power and endow machines with it to make them more compatible with human use. Previously we developed Representational Systems Theory (RST) to study the structure and transformations of representations [1, 2]. In this paper we present Oruga (caterpillar in Spanish; a symbol of transformation), an implementation of various aspects of RST. Oruga consists of a core of data structures corresponding to concepts in RST, a language for communicating with the core, and an engine for producing transformations using a method we call structure transfer. In this paper we present an overview of the core and language of Oruga, with a brief example of the kind of transformation that structure transfer can execute
Phase Transformation Behavior and Stability of LiNiO Cathode Material for Li-Ion Batteries Obtained from In Situ Gas Analysis and Operando X-Ray Diffraction
Ni-rich layered oxide cathode materials, in particular the end member LiNiO, suffer from drawbacks such as high surface reactivity and severe structural changes during de-/lithiation, leading to accelerated degradation and limiting practical implementation of these otherwise highly promising electrode materials in Li-ion batteries. Among all known phase transformations occurring in LiNiO, the one from the H2 phase to the H3 phase at high state of charge is believed to have the most detrimental impact on the material’s stability. In this work, the multistep phase transformation process and associated effects are analyzed by galvanostatic cycling, operando X-ray diffraction, and in situ pressure and gas analysis. The combined results provide thorough insights into the structural changes and how they affect the stability of LiNiO. During the H2–H3 transformation, the most significant change occurs in the c-lattice parameter, resulting in large mechanical stress in LiNiO. As for electrochemical stability, it suffers strongly in the H3 region. Oxygen evolution is observed not only during charge but also during discharge and found to be correlated with the presence of the H2 and H3 phases. Taken together, the experimental data improve the understanding of the degradation processes and the inherent instability of LiNiO in Li-ion cells when operated above around 75% state of charge
