    Flight, feeding and reproductive behavior of Phyllophaga cuyabana (Moser) (Coleoptera: Melolonthidae) adults.

    Phyllophaga cuyabana is a univoltine species and its development occurs completely underground. Its control by conventional methods, such as chemical and biological insecticides, is difficult, so it is important to understand its dispersion, reproduction, and population behavior in order to determine best pest management strategies. The objective of this work was to study the behavior of adults of P. cuyabana. This study was carried out in the laboratory, greenhouse and field sites in Paraná State, Brazil (24o25' S and 52o48' W), during four seasons. The results obtained demonstrate that: a) P. cuyabana adults have a synchronized short-flight period when mating and reproduction occurs; b) adults tend to aggregate in specific sites for mating; c) the majority of adults left the soil on alternate nights; d) the choice of mating and oviposition sites was made by females before copulation, since after copulation adults did not fly from or bury themselves at nearby locations; e) females that fed on leaves after mating, oviposited more eggs than females that had not fed; f) plant species such as sunflower (Helianthus annuus) and the Crotalaria juncea are important food sources for adults

    Effect of soil management on the white grub population and damage in soybean.

    To evaluate the effect of soil management systems on population of white grubs, (Phyllophaga cuyabana Moser), and on its damage in soybean, experiments were set up under no-tillage and conventional tillage (one disk plow, and a leveling disk harrow) areas. Primary tillage equipment, used in other soil management systems, such as moldboard plow, disk plow, chisel plow and heavy duty disk harrow were also tested. Fluctuation of P. cuyabana population and the extent of its damage to soybean was similar under no-tillage and conventional tillage systems. Results comparing a range of primary tillage equipment showed that it affected soil insect populations differently, depending on the time during the season in which tillage was executed. Larval mortality could mostly be attributed to their exposure to adverse factors, soon after tillage, than to changes in soil conditions. Reduction of white grub population was more evident in plots managed by heavier equipment, such as the moldboard plow. Soil tillage could be one component within the soil pest management system in soybean, however, its use can not be generalized

    Modified Zakharov equations for plasmas with a quantum correction

    Quantum Zakharov equations are obtained to describe the nonlinear interaction between quantum Langmuir waves and quantum ion-acoustic waves. These quantum Zakharov equations are applied to two model cases, namely the four-wave interaction and the decay instability. In the case of the four-wave instability, sufficiently large quantum effects tend to suppress the instability. For the decay instability, the quantum Zakharov equations lead to results similar to those of the classical decay instability except for quantum correction terms in the dispersion relations.     Integration of spatial and temporal data for the definition of different landslide hazard scenarios in the area north of Lisbon (Portugal)

    A general methodology for the probabilistic evaluation of landslide hazard is applied, taking in account both the landslide susceptibility and the instability triggering factors, mainly rainfall. The method is applied in the Fanh&#245;es-Tranc&#227;o test site (north of Lisbon, Portugal) where 100&nbsp;shallow translational slides were mapped and integrated into a GIS database. <P style='line-height: 20px;'> For the landslide susceptibility assessment it is assumed that future landslides can be predicted by statistical relationships between past landslides and the spatial data set of the predisposing factors (slope angle, slope aspect, transversal slope profile, lithology, superficial deposits, geomorphology, and land use). Susceptibility is evaluated using algorithms based on statistical/probabilistic analysis (Bayesian model) over unique-condition terrain units in a raster basis. The landslide susceptibility map is prepared by sorting all pixels according to the pixel susceptibility value in descending order. <P style='line-height: 20px;'> In order to validate the results of the susceptibility ana- lysis, the landslide data set is divided in two parts, using a temporal criterion. The first subset is used for obtaining a prediction image and the second subset is compared with the prediction results for validation. The obtained prediction-rate curve is used for the quantitative interpretation of the initial susceptibility map. <P style='line-height: 20px;'> Landslides in the study area are triggered by rainfall. The integration of triggering information in hazard assessment includes (i) the definition of thresholds of rainfall (quantity-duration) responsible for past landslide events; (ii) the calculation of the relevant return periods; (iii) the assumption that the same rainfall patterns (quantity/duration) which produced slope instability in the past will produce the same effects in the future (i.e. same types of landslides and same total affected area). <P style='line-height: 20px;'> The landslide hazard is present as the probability of each pixel to be affected by a slope movement, and results from the coupling between the susceptibility map, the prediction-rate curve, and the return periods of critical rainfall events, on a scenario basis. <P style='line-height: 20px;'> Using this methodology, different hazard scenarios were assessed, corresponding to different rain paths with different return periods

    Rainfall-triggered landslides in the Lisbon region over 2006 and relationships with the North Atlantic Oscillation

    International audienceLandslides occurred in the Lisbon area during the last 50 years were almost always induced by rainfall and have been used to establish rainfall thresholds for regional landslide activity. In 2006, three new rainfall-triggered landslide events occurred in the study area, namely on the 20 March, the 25?27 October, and the 28 November. Landslide events occurred in March and October 2006 include shallow translational slides and few debris flows, and the corresponding absolute antecedent rainfall was found to be above the threshold for durations ranging from 4 to 10 days. These events also fit the combined threshold of daily precipitation and 5 days calibrated antecedent rainfall values. Likewise the landslide event that took place in late November 2006 includes some slope movements with deeper slip surfaces, when compared with landslides dating from March and October. Moreover, the corresponding absolute antecedent rainfall was also found to be above the 40-day period rainfall threshold. Here we characterize in detail the short and long-term atmospheric circulation conditions that were responsible for the intense rainfall episodes that have triggered the corresponding landslide events. It is shown that the three rainfall episodes correspond to considerably different synoptic atmospheric patterns, with the March episode being associated to an intense cut-off low system while the October and November episodes appear to be related to more typical Atlantic low pressure systems (and associated fronts) travelling eastwards. Finally, we analyse the role played by the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) during those months marked by landslide activity. It is shown that the NAO index was consistently negative (usually associated with above average precipitation) for the months prior to the landslide events, i.e. between October 2005 and March 2006, and again between August and October 2006

    Dual-stage sugar substitution in strawberries with a \u3ci\u3eStevia\u3c/i\u3e-based sweetener

    The present study introduces and analyzes a new process denominated dual-stage sugar substitution (D3S). This process aims to induce sugar substitution in strawberries. In a first stage, high-calorie sugars (sucrose, fructose and glucose) are partially removed from the fruit samples and in a second stage, low-calorie sugar (stevioside and rebaudioside) is incorporated to the fruit to maintain its sweetness. The process was evaluated by studying the use of ultrasound application in one or both stages of the D3S process. Best performance of the process was obtained by subjecting the fruit samples to ultrasound in the sugar removal stage followed by immersion of the samples in Stevia-based solution without application of ultrasound in the sweetener incorporation stage. These operating conditions result in the highest sugar removal during the first stage, highest water loss during the process and highest sweetener incorporation during the second stage of the D3S process. The work described in this research is relevant to the production of dried fruits. A process to produce low-calorie dried fruit is presented. The process removes high-calorie sugars from the fruit and replaces it with a natural low-calorie sugar restoring the sweetness of the fruit

    Loading stress distribution in posterior teeth restored by different core materials under fixed zirconia partial denture: A 3d-fea study

    Purpose: To evaluate the effect of different substrate stiffness [sound dentin (SD), resin composite core (RC) or metal core (MC)] on the stress distribution of a zirconia posterior three-unit fixed partial denture (FPD). Methods: The abutment teeth (first molar and first premolar) were modeled, containing 1.5 mm of axial reduction, and converging axial walls. A static structural analysis was performed using a finite element method and the maximum principal stress criterion to analyze the fixed partial denture (FPD) and the cement layers of both abutment teeth. The materials were considered isotropic, linear, elastic, homogeneous and with bonded contacts. An axial load (300 N) was applied to the occlusal surface of the second premolar. Results: The region of the prosthetic connectors showed the highest tensile stress magnitude in the FPD structure depending on the substrate stiffness with different core materials. The highest stress peak was observed with the use of MC (116.4 MPa) compared to RC and SD. For the cement layer, RC showed the highest values in the molar abutment (14.7 MPa) and the highest values for the premolar abutment (14.4 MPa) compared to SD (14.1 and 13.4 MPa) and MC (13.8 and 13.3 MPa). Both metal core and resin composite core produced adequate stress concentration in the zirconia fixed partial denture during the load incidence. However, more flexible substrates, such as composite cores, can increase the tensile stress magnitude on the cement
