Out-of-plane in situ cyclic testing of unreinforced stone masonry walls with distributed loads

The present paper reports an in situ experimental test campaign carried out on existing buildings, in order to investigate the seismic behaviour of traditional masonry walls subject to out-of-plane loads. For the testing proposes, an experimental test setup based on a selfequilibrated scheme was developed and optimized to be applied in situ in two specimens on original and strengthened conditions. The obtained results are presented and carefully discussed namely from the reinforcement solutions’ efficiency point-of-view, as well as compared to previous experimental data obtained for the same type of masonry walls. Additionally, a simplified linearized displacement-based procedure was adapted in order to characterize the nonlinear force-displacement relationship for unreinforced traditional masonry walls and to analytically predict the experimental test results. The confrontation between the experimental and the analytical results are presented and discussed

Theory of Electromagnetic Wave Transmission through Metallic Gratings of Subwavelength Slits

We present FDTD calculations for transmission of light and other electromagnetic waves through periodic arrays of slits in a metallic slab. The results show resonant, frequency dependent, transmittance peaks for subwavelength widths of the slits which can be up to a factor of ten with respect to those out of resonance. Although our conclusions agree with previous work by Lezec and Thio as regards both the magnitude of the enhancement and the lack of contribution of surface plasmon polaritons of the metal surface to this effect, we derive an interpretation from a theory that deals with emerging beam- Rayleigh anomalies of the grating, and with Fabry-Perot resonances of the perforated slab considered as an effective medium.Comment: 12 pages 3 figure

Gluino zero-modes for non-trivial holonomy calorons

    Get PDF
We couple fermion fields in the adjoint representation (gluinos) to the SU(2) gauge field of unit charge calorons defined on R^3 x S_1. We compute corresponding zero-modes of the Dirac equation. These are relevant in semiclassical studies of N=1 Super-symmetric Yang-Mills theory. Our formulas, show that, up to a term proportional to the vector potential, the modes can be constructed by different linear combinations of two contributions adding up to the total caloron field strength.Comment: 17 pages, 3 Postscript figures, late
