    A probabilistic patient scheduling model for reducing the number of no-shows

    No-shows in medical centres cause under-utilisation of resources and increase waiting times in specialty health care services. Although this problem has been addressed in literature, behavioural issues associated with the patient's socio-demographic characteristics and diagnosis have not been widely studied. In this article, we propose a model that includes such behavioural issues in order to reduce impact of no-shows in medical services. The objective is maximising the health centre's expected revenue by using show-up probabilities estimated for each combination of patient and appointment slot. Additionally, the model considers the requirements imposed by both the health centre's management and the health authorities. An extension of the model allows overbooking in some appointment slots. Experimental results show that the proposed model can reduce the waiting list length by 13%, and to attain an increase of about 5% in revenue, when comparing to a model that assigns patients to the first available slot

    Indexación: Scopus.Background: to examine relations between functional movement patterns and weight status in Spanish primary school children and to determine the differences between sexes. Methods: three hundred and thirty-three, 6-13 years old children (164 boys and 169 girls), participated in this study. The main outcome measures were the body mass index (BMI) and the Functional Movement Screen™ (FMS). Children were classified as normal weight (NW), overweight (OV) or obese (OB) according to international cut-offs. Results: total FMS score was negatively correlated with BMI (p < 0.001). FMS score was different between children from NW, OV and OB groups (p = 0.001), lower with the increased BMI (p < 0.001 between all groups). Significant differences (p < 0.05) between NW, OV and OB were found in deep squat, hurdle step, in-line lunge, shoulder mobility, straight leg-raise and push-up tests. As for the sex differences, girls obtained higher scores (p < 0.05) in in-line lunge, shoulder mobility and straight leg-raise, whereas boys did it in push-up (p = 0.044) test. Conclusions: these results confirm that total FMS score significantly and inversely correlates with BMI in a group of 333 school-age children. As for the sex differences, girls outperform boys in movements requiring flexibility and balance, whilst boys outperform girls in tests where muscular strength is required. © 2018 SENPE and Arán Ediciones S.L.Introducción: examinar la relación entre los patrones de movimiento funcional y el estado ponderal en escolares españoles, determinando también la infl uencia de la variable sexo. Conclusiones: los resultados confi rman que la puntuación total en el FMS correlaciona signifi cativa y negativamente con el IMC en este grupo de 333 escolares.     Wildland fire regimes are changing in Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, SW Spain) and large wildland fires (LWFs) are more likely to occur. This is a major change in the disturbance regime and it is a real threat for biodiversity. This paper studies prescribed burning as a mean to create fire resistant stands to allow wildland fire control. It is based in the recent (2002-2005) prescribed burning program in Gran Canaria. We are interested not only in setting fuel-breaks but in providing strategic locations for those (after Farsite and FlamMap simulations). In this paper, we also show a case study for the Mesas (August 17th, 2004) wildland fire and the prescribed burn fuel breaks established around it in the last years in which this fire was successfully anchor.Los reg&iacute;menes de fuegos forestales est&aacute;n cambiando en Gran Canaria y los grandes incendios forestales son m&aacute;s probables que antiguamente. Esto es un cambio importante en el r&eacute;gimen de perturbaciones y una grave amenaza a la biodiversidad. El Plan de Prevenci&oacute;n de Incendios Forestales de Gran Canaria, a&ntilde;o 2002 dej&oacute; clara la obligaci&oacute;n de cambiar las estructuras de vegetaci&oacute;n de la Isla en dos &aacute;mbitos: paisaje y protecci&oacute;n de zonas sensibles. El uso de fuego prescrito (a&ntilde;os 2002-2005) ha resultado ser una herramienta especialmente eficiente en este &aacute;mbito y muy adecuada para compatibilizar las acciones de prevenci&oacute;n de incendios con el mantenimiento de los procesos ecol&oacute;gicos. Estas primeras experiencias en Gran Canaria muestran la idoneidad de los tratamientos para establecer rodales resistentes al paso del fuego en zonas estrat&eacute;gicas (deducidas tras simulaci&oacute;n con Farsite y FlamMap). Y revelan lo conveniente que es que estos rodales resistentes est&eacute;n distribuidos por nuestros montes de modo que los incendios potencialmente grandes encuentren zonas en las que sea factible controlar los per&iacute;metros. Este control se pudo hacer eficientemente en el incendio de las Mesas de 17 de agosto de 2004

    Quantum simulation of Anderson and Kondo lattices with superconducting qubits

    We introduce a mapping between a variety of superconducting circuits and a family of Hamiltonians describing localized magnetic impurities interacting with conduction bands. This includes the Anderson model, the single impurity one- and two-channel Kondo problem, as well as the 1D Kondo lattice. We compare the requirements for performing quantum simulations using the proposed circuits to those of universal quantum computation with superconducting qubits, singling out the specific challenges that will have to be addressed.Comment: Longer versio

    Density and reproductive characteristics of female brown bears in the Cantabrian Mountains, NW Spain

    Here we present annual nearest-neighbour distances (as a proxy of density) between females with cubs-of-the-year (hereafter FCOY) and reproductive characteristics of brown bears Ursus arctos in the Cantabrian Mountains (NW Spain), from 1989 to 2017. FCOY nearest-neighbour distances and reproduction parameters of 19 focal females followed over several consecutive years (from 2004 to 2017) were obtained from bears inhabiting the western sector of the Cantabrian Mountains, where most of the bear population resides. In contrast, general reproductive characteristics were studied in the whole Cantabrian Mountains (western and eastern sectors together) on a sample of 362 litter sizes and 695 cubs. Mean nearest-neighbour distance between FCOY was 2559 ± 1222 m (range = 1305–4757 m). Mean litter size was significantly larger in the west (1.8 ± 0.2 cubs) than in the east (1.3 ± 0.6 cubs). Mean litter size for the whole of the Cantabrian Mountains was 1.6 ± 0.3 cubs. Litter sizes of one, two and three cubs represented 33.4, 56.1 and 10.5% of observed family groups, respectively. Interannual variations in litter size were not significant for both the western and the eastern areas. Mean cub mortality was 0.2 ± 0.5 cubs and did not vary among years. Cub mortality per litter size was 3.9% for one cub, 69.2% for two cubs and 26.9% for three cubs. Mean reproductive rate of the 19 focal females was 1.5 ± 0.6 cubs (n = 58 litters). Litter size of focal FCOY did not differ from the litter size obtained from systematic observations in the whole Cantabrian Mountains. During this period, cub mortality occurred in 24.1% of the 58 litters. Females usually bred every second year (average litter interval = 2.2 years).     Climatic vulnerabilities and ecological preferences of soil invertebrates across biomes.

    Unlike plants and vertebrates, the ecological preferences, and potential vulnerabilities of soil invertebrates to environmental change, remain poorly understood in terrestrial ecosystems globally. We conducted a cross-biome survey including 83 locations across six continents to advance our understanding of the ecological preferences and vulnerabilities of the diversity of dominant and functionally important soil invertebrate taxa, including nematodes, arachnids and rotifers. The diversity of invertebrates was analyzed through amplicon sequencing. Vegetation and climate drove the diversity and dominant taxa of soil invertebrates. Our results suggest that declines in forest cover and plant diversity, and reductions in plant production associated with increases in aridity, can result in reductions of the diversity of soil invertebrates in a drier and more managed world. We further developed global atlases of the diversity of these important soil invertebrates, which were cross-validated using an independent database. Our study advances the current knowledge of the ecological preferences and vulnerabilities of the diversity and presence of functionally important soil invertebrates in soils from across the globe. This information is fundamental for improving and prioritizing conservation efforts of soil genetic resources and management policies
