    Individual body mass and length dataset for over 12,000 fish from Iberian streams

    We provide a unique fish individual body size dataset collected from our own sampling and public sources in north-eastern Spain. The dataset includes individual body size measures (fork length and mass) of 12,288 individuals of 24 fish species within 10 families collected at 118 locations in large rivers and small streams. Fish were caught by one-pass electrofishing following European standard protocols. The fish dataset has information on the local instream conditions including climatic variables (i.e., temperature and precipitation), topography (i.e., altitude), nutrient concentration (i.e., total phosphorus and nitrates), and the IMPRESS values (a measure of cumulative human impacts in lotic ecosystems). The potential uses of this new fish dataset are manifold, including developing size-based indices to further estimate the ecological status of freshwater ecosystems, allometric models, and analysis of variation in body size structure along environmental gradients.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Durante la segunda mitad del siglo XX se produjo un proceso de medicalización de la vida y los partos que se asistían en el domicilio hasta la segunda mitad del siglo XX se institucionalizaron. Actualmente, la atención al parto dentro de centros sanitarios y la cada vez más alta dotación tecnológica ha facilitado que se legitime la medicalización para todos los procesos asistenciales, incluso para aquellos fisiológicos como puede ser un parto normal. Son numerosos los autores que han puesto en evidencia como el proceso de medicalización de la vida ha concebido el cuerpo femenino, durante embarazo y parto, como anárquico y necesitado de control; asumiendo que el uso de las modernas técnicas obstétricas se ha extendido de forma inseparable a un proceso de alienación impuesto a las mujeres reclamándose una atención humanizada, respetuosa con la fisiología y sin medicalización. Desde una línea de argumentación post-estructuralista se critica el discurso basado en que la atención no tecnificada, y respetuosa con la fisiología del parto, significará, sin más, un empoderamiento de la mujer, puesto que, al igual que la posición medicalizadora de la asistencia, implica también una visión esencialista que no tiene en cuenta los componentes éticos y sociales [...

    On-line breath analysis of volatile organic compounds as a method for colorectal cancer detection

    Background: Analysis of exhaled volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in breath is an emerging approach for cancer diagnosis, but little is known about its potential use as a biomarker for colorectal cancer (CRC). We investigated whether a combination of VOCs could distinct CRC patients from healthy volunteers. Methods: In a pilot study, we prospectively analyzed breath exhalations of 38 CRC patient and 43 healthy controls all scheduled for colonoscopy, older than 50 in the average-risk category. The samples were ionized and analyzed using a Secondary ElectroSpray Ionization (SESI) coupled with a Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer (SESI-MS). After a minimum of 2 hours fasting, volunteers deeply exhaled into the system. Each test requires three soft exhalations and takes less than ten minutes. No breath condensate or collection are required and VOCs masses are detected in real time, also allowing for a spirometric profile to be analyzed along with the VOCs. A new sampling system precludes ambient air from entering the system, so background contamination is reduced by an overall factor of ten. Potential confounding variables from the patient or the environment that could interfere with results were analyzed. Results: 255 VOCs, with masses ranging from 30 to 431 Dalton have been identified in the exhaled breath. Using a classification technique based on the ROC curve for each VOC, a set of 9 biomarkers discriminating the presence of CRC from healthy volunteers was obtained, showing an average recognition rate of 81.94%, a sensitivity of 87.04% and specificity of 76.85%. Conclusions: A combination of cualitative and cuantitative analysis of VOCs in the exhaled breath could be a powerful diagnostic tool for average-risk CRC population. These results should be taken with precaution, as many endogenous or exogenous contaminants could interfere as confounding variables. On-line analysis with SESI-MS is less time-consuming and doesn’t need sample preparation. We are recruiting in a new pilot study including breath cleaning procedures and spirometric analysis incorporated into the postprocessing algorithms, to better control for confounding variables

    University teachers' attitudes towards the educational use of ICTS: the case study at the University of Valladolid

    Producción CientíficaDebido al proceso de adaptación y convergencia en el que nos hallamos inmersos en la actualidad y a la incorporación de los nuevos planes europeos de enseñanzas universitarias, resulta necesario plantear la inclusión de metodologías activas en el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje que, por una parte, prioricen la participación activa de los alumnos en este proceso y, por otra, establezcan una relación diferente entre docentes y discentes. Son muchas las acciones de innovación educativa que se están poniendo en práctica en la Universidad española, con el fin de superar los esquemas didácticos tradicionales y lograr una enseñanza de calidad, objetivos fundamentales del proceso de convergencia europea que se está viviendo en la actualidad. El éxito de estas iniciativas, muchas de ellas apoyadas en las denominadas Tecnologías de la Información y de la Comunicación (TIC) depende, por una parte, de la actitud y del compromiso de los docentes con el cambio metodológico y, por otro, del apoyo que se les brinda desde la institución universitaria para satisfacer sus necesidades formativas y facilitar, así, la incorporación de estos nuevos recursos al proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje (E/A). Este artículo presenta un estudio de las actitudes de los profesores de la Facultad de Traducción e Interpretación de la Universidad de Valladolid (España) hacia la integración de las TIC en su práctica docente, ya que consideramos que la dimensión actitudinal representa un elemento clave para la renovación pedagógica exigida por el Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior (EEES).The process of European convergence and harmonization and the EHEA-adaptation plan that our universities are implementing nowadays entail not only a methodological change- that is the introduction of active methodologies that emphasize the role played by students in their own learning process- but also a change in the role assumed by teachers in the teaching-learning process. Spanish universities are currently carrying out many experimental and innovative educational projects which try to overcome traditional methodological limitations in order to guarantee solid and quality educational programs in our higher education institutions. Achieving success in innovative instructional practices-most of them based on ICTs- depends both on university teachers' attitude and commitment to the methodological changes involved and on the institutional and organizational support provided by universities in order to enhance ICT competence development of teachers. That is teachers’ attitudes towards ICTs, which in most cases are related to their ICT competence level, play a crucial role in implementing new innovative tools in the teaching-learning process. This research article shows the attitudes of a group of teachers of the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting (University of Valladolid) to the educational use of ICTs, as we consider that the attitudinal dimension is a key issue in the integration of technology into educational environments

    Understanding the complex geomorphology of a deep sea area affected by continental tectonic indentation: the case of the Gulf of Vera (Western Mediterranean)

    We present a multidisciplinary study of morphology, stratigraphy, sedimentology, tectonic structure, and physical oceanography to report that the complex geomorphology of the Palomares continental margin and adjacent Algerian abyssal plain (i.e., Gulf of Vera, Western Mediterranean), is the result of the sedimentary response to the Aguilas Arc continental tectonic indentation in the Eurasian–Africa plate collision. The inden tation is imprinted on the basement of the margin with elongated metamorphic antiforms that are pierced by igneous bodies, and synforms that accommodate the deformation and create a complex physiography. The basement is partially covered by Upper Miocene deposits sealed by the regional Messinian Erosive Surface characterized by palaeocanyons that carve the modern margin. These deposits and outcropping basement highs are then covered and shaped by Plio-Quaternary contourites formed under the action of the Light Intermediate and Dense Deep Mediterranean bottom currents. Even though bottom currents are responsible for the primary sedimentation that shapes the margin, 97% of this region's seafloor is affected by mass-movements that modified contourite sediments by eroding, deforming, faulting, sliding, and depositing sediments. Mass-movement processes have resulted in the formation of recurrent mass-flow deposits, an enlargement of the submarine canyons and gully incisions, and basin-scale gravitational slides spreading above the Messinian Salinity Crisis salt layer. The Polopo, Aguilas and Gata slides are characterized by an extensional upslope domain that shapes the continental margin, and by a downslope contractional domain that shapes the abyssal plain with diapirs piercing (hemi)pelagites/sheet-like turbidites creating a seafloor dotted by numerous crests. The mass movements were mostly triggered by the interplay of the continental tectonic indentation of the Aguilas Arc with sedimentological factors over time. The indentation, which involves the progressively southeastward tectonic tilting of the whole land-sea region, likely generated a quasi-continuous oversteepening of the entire margin, thus reducing the stability of the contourites. In addition, tectonic tilting and subsidence of the abyssal plain favoured the flow of the underlying Messinian Salinity Crisis salt layer, contributing to the gravitational instability of the overlying sediments over large areas of the margin and abyssal plain

    Effectiveness and Safety of the Sequential Use of a Second and Third Anti-TNF Agent in Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Results From the Eneida Registry

    Background: The effectiveness of the switch to another anti-tumor necrosis factor (anti-TNF) agent is not known. The aim of this study was to analyze the effectiveness and safety of treatment with a second and third anti-TNF drug after intolerance to or failure of a previous anti-TNF agent in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients. Methods: We included patients diagnosed with IBD from the ENEIDA registry who received another anti-TNF after intolerance to or failure of a prior anti-TNF agent. Results: A total of 1122 patients were included. In the short term, remission was achieved in 55% of the patients with the second anti-TNF. The incidence of loss of response was 19% per patient-year with the second anti-TNF. Combination therapy (hazard ratio [HR], 2.4; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.8-3; P < 0.0001) and ulcerative colitis vs Crohn's disease (HR, 1.6; 95% CI, 1.1-2.1; P = 0.005) were associated with a higher probability of loss of response. Fifteen percent of the patients had adverse events, and 10% had to discontinue the second anti-TNF. Of the 71 patients who received a third anti-TNF, 55% achieved remission. The incidence of loss of response was 22% per patient-year with a third anti-TNF. Adverse events occurred in 7 patients (11%), but only 1 stopped the drug. Conclusions: Approximately half of the patients who received a second anti-TNF achieved remission; nevertheless, a significant proportion of them subsequently lost response. Combination therapy and type of IBD were associated with loss of response. Remission was achieved in almost 50% of patients who received a third anti-TNF; nevertheless, a significant proportion of them subsequently lost response
