Simple s helicity structure at the nucleon-nucleon vertex of the pomeron and meson exchanges: experimental evidence and connections with duality

    Get PDF
Experimental evidence in favour of an almost pure s helicity non-flip character at the nucleon-nucleon vertex of the Pomeron, f O and ω exchanges is discussed. Further we discuss some connections with duality of this phenomenon and the related feature of ϱ and A 2 exchanges which present an essentially helicity flip coupling at the NN vertex.Facultad de Ciencias Exacta

Biophysical Processes Determining the Connectivity of the Alboran Sea Fish Populations

    Get PDF
This chapter revises biogeophysical issues of connectivity processes for fish populations in the Alboran Sea—Strait of Gibraltar—Gulf of Cadiz area. Connectivity of early life history stages between distant spawning grounds is crucial to incorporate vital developmental rates that condition survival probabilities at critical ontogenic stages. Hydrodynamics is pivotal to the process and most particular for pelagic species originating from adult fish adapted to recurrent patterns. Therefore, special focus has been placed on the hydrodynamics of the region, particularly on the Alboran Sea where the swift and energetic eastward-flowing Atlantic Jet entering the basin from the Strait of Gibraltar determines the surface circulation patterns. The Jet establishes an obvious zonal west-to-east connectivity, prevents the one in the opposite east-to-west direction and works as a hydrodynamic barrier that hampers the north-to-south connectivity. The chapter addresses these processes, discusses possible mechanisms to achieve connectivity between north and south shores, which have to overcome the hydrodynamic barrier, and assesses the feasibility of east-to-west connectivity by means of intermediate-depth currents. Implications on the populations and ecosystems of the Alboran Sea and on the three main harvested species potentially affected by hydrodynamic connectivity in the basin (European hake, the sardine, and the blackspot seabream) are also commented.Preprin

Transcultural adaptation and validation of the Spanish language version of the questionnaire OQLQ for the assessment of quality of life in orthognathic patients

    Get PDF
Orthognathic surgery is the cornerstone of the treatment of dentofacial deformities, which have a great psychological and social impact on the life of the patient. Patient satisfaction and the impact on quality of life have recently become clinical parameters of growing importance. The aim of this study was to undertake a transcultural adaptation, translation to Spanish and validation of this version of the questionnaire OQLQ, used to measure quality of life in the context of Spanish culture. Validation of the OQLQ questionnaire to the Spanish language was carried out through the methodology of translation and back translation, conceptual equivalence and piloting. The Spanish version was applied through a cross-sectional study to a total of 50 patients undergoing orthognathic surgery. The adapted and validated version showed adequate metric properties of reliability, change sensitivity and validity. In this study, a positive impact of orthognathic surgery on the specific quality of life was evident in 96% of patients, with an average improvement of 58% with respect to the initial score. Dentofacial deformities have a marked negative impact on the lives of patients, with orthognathic surgery being a therapeutic tool of great value in improving the quality of life in social, functional and aesthetic terms. The pilot test of this Spanish language version of the OQLQ proved valid for the assessment of quality of life in Spanish-speaking orthognathic patients or those with a Spanish culture

Gaidropsarus gallaeciae (Gadiformes: Gaidropsaridae), a New Northeast Atlantic Rockling Fish, with Commentary on the Taxonomy of the Genus

    Get PDF
A new species of rockling fish genus Gaidropsarus is described based on six specimens collected in Galicia and Porcupine Banks, in Atlantic European waters. An analysis of morphological characters has confirmed the specific status of specimens of a previously described clade by comparison of DNA sequences. Gaidropsarus gallaeciae sp. nov. it is distinguished from congeners by the following combination of characters: 43–44 vertebrae; 54–60 third dorsal fin rays; 44–52 anal fin rays; 21–23 pectoral fin rays; head length 21.1–25.2% of standard length (SL); length of the pelvic fin 16.2–19% SL; length of the first dorsal fin ray 15.8–27% of head length (%HL); eye diameter 15.8–20.5% HL; and interorbital space 21.7–28% HL. Using the nucleotide sequence of the 5’ end of the mitochondrial COI gene as a molecular marker, the genetic p-distance between the new species and its congeners far exceeds the usual 2%, granting the former the status of an independent taxon, which is in accordance with the morphological identification. A comparison with the other 12 valid species of the genus is presented. The study also highlights the morphological diversity resulting from the meristic and biometric variability of Gaidropsarus species and lays the groundwork for future taxonomic studies on this genus.Versión del editor5,82

Influence of diffractive interactions on cosmic ray air showers

    Get PDF
A comparative study of commonly used hadronic collision simulation packages is presented. The characteristics of the products of hadron-nucleus collisions are analyzed from a general perspective, but focusing on their correlation with diffractive processes. One of the purposes of our work is to give quantitative estimations of the impact that different characteristics of the hadronic models have on air shower observables. Several sets of shower simulations using different settings for the parameters controlling the diffractive processes are used to analyze the correlations between diffractivity and shower observables. We find that the relative probability of diffractive processes during the shower development have a non negligible influence over the longitudinal profile as well as the distribution of muons at ground level. The implications on experimental data analysis are discussed.Facultad de Ciencias ExactasInstituto de Física La Plat

On the inequivalence of renormalization and self-adjoint extensions for quantum singular interactions

    Get PDF
A unified S-matrix framework of quantum singular interactions is presented for the comparison of self-adjoint extensions and physical renormalization. For the long-range conformal interaction the two methods are not equivalent, with renormalization acting as selector of a preferred extension and regulator of the unbounded Hamiltonian.Facultad de Ciencias Exacta

Multichannel framework for singular quantum mechanics

    Get PDF
A multichannel S-matrix framework for singular quantum mechanics (SQM) subsumes the renormalization and self-adjoint extension methods and resolves its boundary-condition ambiguities. In addition to the standard channel accessible to a distant ("asymptotic") observer, one supplementary channel opens up at each coordinate singularity, where local outgoing and ingoing singularity waves coexist. The channels are linked by a fully unitary S-matrix, which governs all possible scenarios, including cases with an apparent nonunitary behavior as viewed from asymptotic distances.Facultad de Ciencias ExactasInstituto de Física La Plat

The metamorphic rocks that outcrop in the San Lucas foothills (in the area covered by the map indentified as number 64), are grouped in two stratigraphic units: The so-called San Lucas Gneiss Formation and the Pinillos Metamorphic Unit (informal stratigraphic denomination). This latter unit is composed by The Armenia Schists and Tapoa Phyllites. The San Lucas Gneiss Formation, comprise quartz-feldspar gneisses (quartz-feldspar gneisses with biotite, quartz-feldspar gneisses with hornblende) and metamafic rocks (hornblende gneiss, granulites and metagabbros). The Armenia Schists is composed by pelite schists; such as micaceous schists; micáceous schists with andalusite; and calco-silicate schists, quartz rich and with variable amounts of minerals from epidote, hornblende and actinolite groups. The Tapoa Phyllite Rocks are composed by quartz and sericite with altered opaque minerals. The San Lucas Gneiss Formation Metamorphism is regional and reaches the high anfibolite and pyroxene granulites facies. The 1.124Ma ± 22 zircon U-Pb age, indicates a Mesoproterozoic tectonothermal event, related to the Grenville Orogeny, that took place during the Rodinia supercontinent consolidation. The Pinillos Metamorphic Rocks Unit, is Early Paleozoic in age, according to the field relations.  Key words: Metamorphism, Serrania de San Lucas, San Lucas Gneiss Formation, Armenia Schist, Geochronology.
