The photovoltaic conversion of solar energy is a clean way of producing which for sustainability should (and most probably will) become a major source of electricity. The sun is a huge resource but relatively diluted and it is reasonable to expect that only high efficiency extraction can be cost effective for mass exploitation.     Effect of Carbamazepine, Ibuprofen, Triclosan and Sulfamethoxazole on Anaerobic Bioreactor Performance: Combining Cell Damage, Ecotoxicity and Chemical Information

    Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are partially degraded in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), thereby leading to the formation of more toxic metabolites. Bacterial populations in bioreactors operated in WWTPs are sensitive to different toxics such as heavy metals and aromatic compounds, but there is still little information on the effect that pharmaceuticals exert on their metabolism, especially under anaerobic conditions. This work evaluated the effect of selected pharmaceuticals that remain in solution and attached to biosolids on the metabolism of anaerobic biomass. Batch reactors operated in parallel under the pressure of four individual and mixed PPCPs (carbamazepine, ibuprofen, triclosan and sulfametoxazole) allowed us to obtain relevant information on anaerobic digestion performance, toxicological effects and alterations to key enzymes involved in the biodegradation process. Cell viability was quantitatively evaluated using an automatic analysis of confocal microscopy images, and showed that triclosan and mixed pollutants caused higher toxicity and cell death than the other individual compounds. Both individual pollutants and their mixture had a considerable impact on the anaerobic digestion process, favoring carbon dioxide production, lowering organic matter removal and methane production, which also produced microbial stress and irreversible cell damage.Comunidad de MadridUniversidad de Alcal

    Polymorphisms in XPC, XPD, XRCC1, and XRCC3 DNA repair genes and lung cancer risk in a population of Northern Spain

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Polymorphisms in DNA repair genes have been associated to repair DNA lesions, and might contribute to the individual susceptibility to develop different types of cancer. Nucleotide excision repair (NER), base excision repair (BER), and double-strand break repair (DSBR) are the main DNA repair pathways. We investigated the relationship between polymorphisms in two NER genes, <it>XPC </it>(poly (AT) insertion/deletion: PAT-/+) and <it>XPD </it>(Asp312Asn and Lys751Gln), the BER gene <it>XRCC1 </it>(Arg399Gln), and the DSBR gene <it>XRCC3 </it>(Thr241Met) and the risk of developing lung cancer.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A hospital-based case-control study was designed with 516 lung cancer patients and 533 control subjects, matched on ethnicity, age, and gender. Genotypes were determined by PCR-RFLP and the results were analysed using multivariate unconditional logistic regression, adjusting for age, gender and pack-years.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Borderline association was found for <it>XPC </it>and <it>XPD </it>NER genes polymorphisms, while no association was observed for polymorphisms in BER and DSBR genes. <it>XPC PAT+/+ </it>genotype was associated with no statistically significant increased risk among ever smokers (OR = 1.40; 95%CI = 0.94–2.08), squamous cell carcinoma (OR = 1.44; 95%CI = 0.85–2.44), and adenocarcinoma (OR = 1.72; 95%CI = 0.97–3.04). <it>XPD </it>variant genotypes (<it>312Asn/Asn </it>and <it>751Gln/Gln</it>) presented a not statistically significant risk of developing lung cancer (OR = 1.52; 95%CI = 0.91–2.51; OR = 1.38; 95%CI = 0.85–2.25, respectively), especially among ever smokers (OR = 1.58; 95%CI = 0.96–2.60), heavy smokers (OR = 2.07; 95%CI = 0.74–5.75), and adenocarcinoma (OR = 1.88; 95%CI = 0.97–3.63). On the other hand, individuals homozygous for the XRCC1 <it>399Gln </it>allele presented no risk of developing lung cancer (OR = 0.87; 95%CI = 0.57–1.31) except for individuals carriers of <it>399Gln/Gln </it>genotype and without family history of cancer (OR = 0.57; 95%CI = 0.33–0.98) and no association was found between <it>XRCC3 </it>Thr241Met polymorphism and lung cancer risk (OR = 0.92; 95%CI = 0.56–1.50), except for the <it>241Met/Met </it>genotype and squamous cell carcinoma risk (OR = 0.47; 95%CI = 0.23–1.00).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In conclusion, we analysed the association between <it>XPC</it>, <it>XPD</it>, <it>XRCC1</it>, and <it>XRCC3 </it>polymorphisms and the individual susceptibility to develop lung cancer in the Spanish population, specifically with a highly tobacco exposed population. We attempt to contribute to the discovery of which biomarkers of DNA repair capacity are useful for screening this high-risk population for primary preventing and early detection of lung cancer.</p

    Thin Film intermediate band chalcopyrite solar cells: Theoretical Analysis of device performance and prospects for their realisation

    The feasibility of implementing the intermediate-band (IB) concept into a relevant thin-film technology has been assessed. Compounds belonging to the group of I-III-VI2 chalcopyrites, currently used as absorbers in the leading thin-film technology, appear as promising candidates for the realization of IB-devices. In this paper we first analyze the expected performance of such a thin-film intermediate band solar cell (TF-IBSC) by considering different levels of idealization. In the second part of the paper some issues relevant for the practical realization of IBs in chalcopyrites are discussed and impurities acting as potential IB-precursors in the chalcopyrite sulfide host identified

    Demonstration and Analysis of the Photocurrent by absorption of two sub-bandgap photons in a quantum dot intermediate band solar cell

    In order to surpass the efficiency limit of single gap solar cells, intermediate band solar cells (IBSC) have to fulfill two requirements: the production of extra photocurrent by absorption of sub-bandgap photons in electronic transitions involving the intermediate band (IB) and the preservation of a high output voltage, not limited by the existence of this band. This work presents experimental evidence of the production of electron-hole pairs by absorption of two sub-bandgap photons in IBSC prototypes fabricated with InAs/GaAs QD material. The experiments were carried out at low temperatures using a specifically designed modulated photocurrent measurement set-up with two light beams. The results are analysed with the help of a simple equivalent circuit model. This analysis is also used to highlight the relevance of the two-photon mechanism demonstrated in the experiment. It is discussed that, although the absorption of sub-bandgap photons in one of the IB transitions and subsequent thermal escape of carriers is a sufficient mechanism to obtain a photocurrent enhancement, the absorption of sub-bandgap photons in both transitions involving the IB is a requisite for the voltage preservation in IBSCs
