X-ray/gamma-ray flux correlations in the BL Lacs Mrk 421 and 501 using HAWC data

The HAWC gamma ray observatory is located at the Sierra Negra Volcano in Puebla, Mexico, at an altitude of 4,100 meters. HAWC is a wide field of view array of 300 water Cherenkov detectors that are continuously surveying ~ 2sr of the sky, operating since March 2015. The large collected data sample allows HAWC to perform an unbiased monitoring of the BL Lac Mrk 421. This is the closest and brightest known extragalactic high-synchrotron-peaked BL Lac in the gamma-ray/X- ray bands and is extensively monitored by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on-board the Fermi satellite, and the BAT and XRT instruments of the Swift satellite. In this work, we use 25 months of HAWC data together with Swift-XRT data to characterize potential correlations between both wavelengths. This analysis shows that HAWC and Swift-XRT data are correlated even stronger than expected for quasi-simultaneous observations.Comment: Presented at the 35th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC2017), Bexco, Busan, Korea. A Jacobi-based algorithm for computing symmetric eigenvalues and eigenvectors in a two-dimensional mesh

    Get PDF
The paper proposes an algorithm for computing symmetric eigenvalues and eigenvectors that uses a one-sided Jacobi approach and is targeted to a multicomputer in which nodes can be arranged as a two-dimensional mesh with an arbitrary number of rows and columns. The algorithm is analysed through simple analytical models of execution time, which show that an adequate choice of the mesh configuration (number of rows and columns) can improve performance significantly, with respect to a one-dimensional configuration, which is the most frequently considered scenario in current proposals. This improvement is especially noticeable in large systems.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

On the link between the coefficient of determination and polarization

    Get PDF
In this paper, taking as starting point the link between polarization and dispersion, we reformulate the measure of polarization of Zhang and Kanbur (2001) using the decomposition of the variance instead of the decomposition of the Theil index. The proposed measure is equivalent to the coefficient of determination of an ANOVA Linear Model, that explains the income of the households as a function of any population characteristic e.g. education, gender, occupation etc. This result provides an alternative way to analyze polarization by household characteristics and at the same time allows us to compare sub-populations via the estimated coefficients of the ANOVA model.Polarization, coefficient of determination, ANOVA model.

Rural development, population aging and gender in Spain: the case of rural women in the autonomous community of Castilla y León

The transformation that rural areas have undergone during the last 30 years constitutes a very important phenomenon in Spain, but it is especially relevant in certain regions such as the Autonomous Community of Castilla y León. The constant process of depopulation, which a great number of villages of that region are suffering, primarily caused by the continuous transfer of labour force from agriculture activities to the industrial sector and, more recently, towards the service sector of urban areas, is provoking the progressive demographic and economic decadence of rural areas. In this context, women played a key role in the process of rural exodus, especially in the case of young women. This trend has created highly aged, male rural populations, with few potential human resources, which are incapable of sustaining and promoting economic and social development in the future. This project attempts to determine to which extent women have been and continue to be the protagonists of the social and economic transformations which have affected rural areas during the last decades. To this aim, we will undertake an analysis by sex of different demographic, economic and social variables at the municipal level, which will show women’s spatial situation, according to rural criteria. We will also undertake a prospective analysis of the population evolution of these rural areas, in order to obtain a probable demographic scenario which rural women will have to face in the future. The specific focus of this study will be the territory of the Autonomous Community of Castilla y León. The results of this analysis will serve as a very useful reference for the public authorities as well as for private agents of this and other Spanish regions whenever they have to design alternative policies and actions regarding the role that rural women play and will play in the economic maintenance and development of rural areas. This is especially true given that, until now, studies which focus on the quantitative analysis of the economic and social situation of rural women have been practically nonexistent.

El proyecto Epístola: edición digital de los epistolarios de la Edad de Plata

This article discusses the Epistola project. Epistola has been developed by the Francisco Giner de los Ríos Foundation in collaboration with the Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid and its objective is the recovery and digital edition of the correspondence of the key individuals from the Edad de Plata. The Epistola project has developed tools to (i) apply a set of notation and transcription criteria agreed in the project and (ii) hold a set of records with the most relevant information associated to each letter. This creates a system with semantic characteristics, since the different elements of the letters are recorded by their metadata and inter-relations. The system will eventually enable users to visualize the relationships established between the different elements of the letters and provide new insights into the Edad the Plata. This article explains the characteristics of these tools, their capabilities and how they operate.

Detecting Functional Requirements Inconsistencies within Multi-teams Projects Framed into a Model-based Web Methodology

    Get PDF
One of the most essential processes within the software project life cycle is the REP (Requirements Engineering Process) because it allows specifying the software product requirements. This specification should be as consistent as possible because it allows estimating in a suitable manner the effort required to obtain the final product. REP is complex in itself, but this complexity is greatly increased in big, distributed and heterogeneous projects with multiple analyst teams and high integration between functional modules. This paper presents an approach for the systematic conciliation of functional requirements in big projects dealing with a web model-based approach and how this approach may be implemented in the context of the NDT (Navigational Development Techniques): a web methodology. This paper also describes the empirical evaluation in the CALIPSOneo project by analyzing the improvements obtained with our approach.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TIN2013-46928-C3-3-RMinisterio de Economía y Competitividad TIN2015-71938-RED
