A language exchange program: sustainability innovation in language and culture engagement

    Get PDF
The Language Exchange Program between the UPM and UBCO acts as a model for sustainability innovation in language and culture engagement as the students can interact with native speakers in communication tasks. This interdisciplinary initiative supports the latest methodological principles observed in the Common European Framework for Languages [1], such as autonomous and lifelong learning, self-assessment and peer-assessment as well as the incorporation of new technologies to the learning proces

The Influence of Openings on Energy Demand of Buildings: Analysis of their Characteristic Parameters Using LIDER Software (Spain)

    Get PDF
Openings on buildings façades perform several functions, namely, illumination, ventilation, vision, and communication with outside conditions. Furthermore, when energy efficiency is to be considered, the opening plays a major part in the energetic balance of a building. This article studies the opening as a specialized low technology system which regulates the external climatic conditions having an impact on the building energy demand. First, it was analysed the main parameters that characterize the opening as an element of solar reception in order to indentify the influence of each of them with regard to energy demand. By means of LIDER software calculation method the opening is studied as a solar gain element. LIDER is a recognized free computer programme of Spanish Building Regulation (Código Técnico de la Edificación, CTE). The contribution of 14 specific parameters of the opening to energy demand is evaluated, specifically, orientation, window-to-wall ratio, frame percentage, degree of absorption, glazing g-value, frame U-value, glazing U-value, overhangs, returns, louver blinds, awnings, air permeability, infiltration and air change rate. With this approach, it was obtained the relative relevance of the 14 parameters under study with regards to energy performance of a simulated space considering the conditions set in the analysis. The alteration in those parameters allows for variations in energy demand estimated at the range 10-60% in heating, and between 2-150% in cooling. The outcomes are more important in qualitative than in quantitative terms due to the limitations of the method and to the working hypotheses of the onset conditions

    Modelling and Analysing Highly-Configurable Services

Since the emergence of XaaS and Cloud Computing paradigms, the number and complexity of available services have been increasing enormously. These services usually o er a plethora of con guration options, which can even include additional services provided as a bundled o er. In this scenario, usual tasks, such as description, discovery and selection, become increasingly complex due to the variability of the decision space. The notion of Highly-Con gurable Service (HCS) has been coined to identify such group of services that can be con gured and bundled together to perform demanding computing tasks. In this paper we characterize HCSs by means of an abstract model and a text-based, human-readable notation named SYNOPSIS that facilitates the execution of various service tasks. In particular, we validate the usefulness of our model when checking the validity of HCSs descriptions in SYNOPSIS, as well as selecting the optimal con guration with regards to user requirements and preferences by providing a prototype implementation.Junta de Andalucía P12-TIC-1867Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TIN2015-70560-RScience Foundation Ireland Research. One of the main predictors of being a victim of cyber-aggression is engaging in high-risk behaviours on the internet. The main objective of this research is to analyse the relationship between two types of parental control (restriction and supervision) and engagement in high-risk internet behaviours during adolescence. To that end, and as a secondary objective, we designed and validated the High-risk Internet Behaviours Questionnaire for adolescents, used in this study. We analysed the responses of 946 adolescents aged between 12 and 18 to the High-risk Internet Behaviours Questionnaire and the Questionnaire on Parental Control of Internet Use in Adolescence. The results show that the questionnaire has appropriate metrics of reliability and validity, and show the existence of a statistically significant negative relationship, albeit small, between supervision and engaging in high-risk internet behaviours. We discuss the practical implications of these results

Metacognitive Knowledge and Skills in Students with Deep Approach to Learning. Evidence from Mathematical Problem Solving

Student approaches to learning and metacognitive strategies are two important conditioning factors in solving mathematical problems. The evidence suggests that it is the deep approach to learning which leads to student success in such tasks. The present study focused on analyzing the differences in metacognitive knowledge and skills in a sample of 524 fifth and sixth grade students divided into three groups based on their different levels of use of a deep a pproach (241 = low; 152 = medium; and 131 = high). Metacognitive knowledge was assessed using the Learning Strategies Knowledge Questionnaire, while evidence about metacognitive skills was gathered by means of process measures (Triple Tasks Procedure) during students’ solving of two mathematical word problems. Statistically significant differences in metacognitive knowledge were found among groups while differences in metacognitive skills were only found in the second task, with a low effect size.; El enfoque de aprendizaje y las estrategias metacognitivas son importantes condicionantes en la resolución de problemas matemáticos.

ADHD; Prison; Outpatient psychiatric patients; Legal consequencesTDAH; Carcelarios; Muestra clínica; Consecuencias legalesTDAH; Presó; Pacients psiquiàtrics ambulatoris; Conseqüències legalsThis study aimed to describe and compare the educational, social, and family profiles of adults with and without ADHD from two different settings: a prison and an outpatient psychiatric setting. A total of 542 participants, aged between 17 and 69 years, took part in the study. The participants consisted of four groups: a prison sample with ADHD (n = 69) and without ADHD (n = 183), and an outpatient psychiatric sample with ADHD (n = 218) and without ADHD (n = 72). The results showed that, firstly, there were some statistically significant differences between the groups in academic history, social and family situation, and the adoption of risk behaviors during adolescence and early adulthood. Secondly, some of these differences were related to diagnosis (ADHD versus non-ADHD) while others were related to the sample being examined (prison versus psychiatric). The findings from the study showed the presence of significant implications in social, family, educational, and employment achievements both for adults with ADHD (both prison and psychiatric samples) and for adults without ADHD.Este estudio tiene como objetivo describir y comparar los perfiles educativos, sociales y familiares de un grupo de adultos con y sin TDAH de dos muestras diferentes: una de carcelarios y una población clínica. This work was supported by the Regional Government of Asturias under Grant [FC-15-GRUPIN14-053]
