Compressed k2-Triples for Full-In-Memory RDF Engines
Current "data deluge" has flooded the Web of Data with very large RDF
datasets. They are hosted and queried through SPARQL endpoints which act as
nodes of a semantic net built on the principles of the Linked Data project.
Although this is a realistic philosophy for global data publishing, its query
performance is diminished when the RDF engines (behind the endpoints) manage
these huge datasets. Their indexes cannot be fully loaded in main memory, hence
these systems need to perform slow disk accesses to solve SPARQL queries. This
paper addresses this problem by a compact indexed RDF structure (called
k2-triples) applying compact k2-tree structures to the well-known
vertical-partitioning technique. It obtains an ultra-compressed representation
of large RDF graphs and allows SPARQL queries to be full-in-memory performed
without decompression. We show that k2-triples clearly outperforms
state-of-the-art compressibility and traditional vertical-partitioning query
resolution, remaining very competitive with multi-index solutions.Comment: In Proc. of AMCIS'201

Vortex transmutation
Using group theory arguments and numerical simulations, we demonstrate the
possibility of changing the vorticity or topological charge of an individual
vortex by means of the action of a system possessing a discrete rotational
symmetry of finite order. We establish on theoretical grounds a "transmutation
pass rule'' determining the conditions for this phenomenon to occur and
numerically analize it in the context of two-dimensional optical lattices or,
equivalently, in that of Bose-Einstein condensates in periodic potentials.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Solvent- and ligand-induced switch of selectivity in gold(I)-catalyzed tandem reactions of 3-propargylindoles
The selectivity of our previously described gold-catalyzed tandem reaction, 1,2-indole migration followed by aura-iso-Nazarov cyclization, of 3-propargylindoles bearing (hetero)aromatic substituents at both the propargylic and terminal positions, was reversed by the proper choice of the catalyst and the reaction conditions. Thus, 3-(inden-2-yl)indoles, derived from an aura-Nazarov cyclization (instead of an aura-iso-Nazarov cyclization), were obtained in moderate to good yields from a variety of 3-propargylindolesMICINN (CTQ2010-15358 and CTQ2009-09949), Junta de Castilla y Leon (BU021A09 and GR-172), MEC (FPU predoctoral fellowship to D.M.), Ramón y Cajal (contract to M.A F R.), Juan de la Cierva (contract to P.G.G.
A new approach to study the relative age effect with the use of additive logistic regression models: a case of study of FIFA football tournaments (1908-2012)
[Abstract]: The relative age effect plays an important role in the pursuit of excellence, providing advantage
to athletes born at the beginning of the year or near the cut-off date. This phenomenon has been observed in areas such as sports, education or business. Traditionally, the chisquare test has been used to analyze whether there are statistically significant differences in the distribution of births in each of the four quarters of the year. However, this approach is limited, focusing only on the analysis of the response variable, without taking into account the effect of a set of predictive variables. In this paper a new approach is proposed to study the relative age effect with the use of a logistic regression additive model. The new method has been evaluated with a sample of 21,639 players involved in football tournaments organized by
the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) between 1908 and 2012. New conclusions have been established that the relative age effect exists regarding player age and the year of the competition in male FIFA competitions and its effect is dynamic and complex.Xunta de Galicia; ED431G/0
