    Recognition of carbon monoxide is difficult due to its plain physical-chemical properties. Carbon and gas operating heating systems may cause severe poisoning. Carbon-monoxide intoxication may generate severe hypoxic damage and it may cause death. The authors present the case of severe carbon monoxide poisoning affecting one young child and five adults, including a pregnant woman. Because the availability of hyperbaric oxygen therapy is limited in Hungary, urgent cesarean section was performed to avoid intrauterine hypoxic damage. The authors note that there are no standardized non-invasive methods for measuring fetal carbon-monoxide level and that the level of carbon monoxide accumulation is higher and the clearance is longer in the fetus than in the mother. The pathophysiology of carbon monoxide intoxication and therapeutic options in pregnancy are discussed

    Sistem penyimpanan hasil penelitian yang ada di Universitas Klabat (UNKLAB) merupakan sistem penyimpanan yang masih bersifat manual, dimana setiap penelitian di simpan di kantor fakultas dan di perpustakaan. Hal ini menyebabkan berkas yang ada tidak tersimpan dengan teratur dan kesulitan bagi pengguna untuk mengakses. Sehingga sangat dibutuhkan untuk dikembangkan sistem berkas digital penyimpanan berkas hasil penelitian. Sistem yang dirancang nantinya dapat menghubungkan mahasiswa dan dosen pada semua penelitaian yang ada di UNKLAB. Sistem berkas digital ini dibangun dengan menggunakan Framework CodeIgniter (CI) yang berbasis bahasa pemrograman PHP dan MySQL sebagai basisdata. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam pengembangan sistem berkas digital ini menggunakan metode spiral.     The architecture of a new class of computers, optimized for lattice QCD calculations, is described. An individual node is based on a single integrated circuit containing a PowerPC 32-bit integer processor with a 1 Gflops 64-bit IEEE floating point unit, 4 Mbyte of memory, 8 Gbit/sec nearest-neighbor communications and additional control and diagnostic circuitry.     Influence of Fires, Fungi and Mountain Pine Beetles on Development of a Lodgepole Pine Forest in South-Central Oregon

    Virtually pure lodgepole pine stands form an edaphic climax community over large areas of the infertile pumice plateau of south-central Oregon. During our ongoing studies on the dynamics of these forest we developed the scenario that periodic fires create fungal infection courts in damaged roots; in time, advanced decay develops in the butts and stems of these trees. The mountain pine beetle preferentially selects and kills these trees during the flight season. As these outbreaks develop, additional uninfected trees are attacked. In time, the stage is set for subsequent fires as needles drop, snags fall, and logs decay

    We present a systematic algebraic and numerical investigation of the instantaneous Bethe-Salpeter equation. Emphasis is placed on confining interaction kernels of the Lorentz scalar, time component vector, and full vector types. We explore stability of the solutions and Regge behavior for each of these interactions, and conclude that only time component vector confinement leads to normal Regge structure and stable solutions.Comment: Latex (uses epsf macro), 26 pages of text, 12 postscript figures included

    A consistent derivation of the quark--antiquark and three quark potentials in a Wilson loop context

    In this paper we give a new derivation of the quark-antiquark potential in the Wilson loop context. This makes more explicit the approximations involved and enables an immediate extension to the three-quark case. In the qq‾q\overline{q} case we find the same semirelativistic potential obtained in preceding papers but for a question of ordering. In the 3q3q case we find a spin dependent potential identical to that already derived in the literature from the ad hoc and non correct assumption of scalar confinement. Furthermore we obtain the correct form of the spin independent potential up to the 1/m21/m^2 order.Comment: 30 pages, Revtex (3 figures available as hard copies only), IFUM 452/F

    Photophysics and photochemistry of carminic acid and related natural pigments

    Carminic acid (CA) and other related compounds have been widely used as dyes in cultural heritage, cosmetics and the food industry. Therefore, the study of their properties upon photoexcitation is particularly important. In this work, the photophysical and photochemical properties of CA, carminic lake and other related pigments in aqueous solutions are revisited. Novel quantitative information regarding the fate of the photoexcited states is provided including the efficiency of reactive oxygen species (ROS) photosensitized production (i.e., singlet oxygen and hydrogen peroxide) as well as the efficiency of nonradiative deactivation pathways. Laser-induced optoacoustic spectroscopy (LIOAS) data revealed that for all the investigated compounds, almost all the absorbed energy is released as prompt heat to the media. This is in agreement with the fact that other deactivation pathways, including fluorescence (phiF similar to 10-3-10-5), photochemical degradation (phiR similar to 10-4) and/or photosensitized ROS formation (phiH2O2 < 10-5 and phiDelta similar to 0), are negligible or null. In addition, a comprehensive investigation of the photodegradation of CA and lake is herein reported. The influence of different experimental parameters such as irradiation wavelength and oxygen partial pressure was evaluated. UV-vis absorption and fluorescence emission spectroscopy in combination with chemometric data analysis were used to elucidate the relevant aspects of the photodegradation mechanism involved and the spectroscopic features of the photoproducts generated. In aqueous media, CA follows an O2-dependent photochemical degradation when subject to elapsed photoexcitation in the UVB, UVA and visible regions. The photoproduct profile depends on the excitation wavelength giving rise to quite distinctive spectroscopic profiles. With respect to lake, our data suggest that upon photoexcitation, this pigment releases a CA-like chromophore that follows a similar fate to CA
