    Excellent buffer layer for growing high-quality Y-Ba-Cu-O thin films

    Eu2CuO4 (ECO) has been used as a buffer layer for growing of YBa2Cu3O7-ä (YBCO) thin films on SrTiO3(100) and Y-stabilized ZrO2(100) substrates. The epitaxy, crystallinity, and surface of YBCO thin films have been significantly improved by using ECO buffer layer as investigated by x-ray diffraction, rocking curves, scanning electron microscope, surface step profiler, and x-ray small-angle reflection. The best value of the full width at half-maximum of the YBCO(005) peak can be greatly reduced down to less than 0.1°. The scanning-electron-microscope photos indicate a very smooth surface for the YBCO thin films. The average roughness is less than 5 nm over a wide scanning region of 2000 ìm. The results of x-ray small-angle reflection indicate a very clear and flat interface between YBCO and ECO layers. Meanwhile, the resistivity of ECO is about 20 times higher than that of PrBa2Cu3Oy at the boiling point of liquid nitrogen. Our results suggest that ECO should be a good barrier candidate for fabricating high-Tc superconductor junctions.published_or_final_versio

    Optical Transition and Momentum Transfer in Atomic Wave Packets

    It is shown that the population Rabi-floppings in a lossless two-level atom, interacting with a monochromatic electromagnetic field, in general are convergent in time. The well-known continuous floppings take place because the restricted choosing of initial conditions, that is when the atom initially is chosen on ground or excited level before the interaction, simultaneously having a definite value of momentum there. The convergence of Rabi-floppings in atomic wave-packet-states is a direct consequence of Doppler effect on optical transition rates (Rabi-frequencies): it gradually leads to ''irregular'' chaotic-type distributions of momentum in ground and excited energy levels, smearing the amplitudes of Rabi-floppings. Conjointly with Rabi-floppings, the coherent accumulation of momentum on each internal energy level monotonically diminishes too.Comment: 6 pages, 10 Figure

    Characterization of volatile organic compounds at a roadside environment in Hong Kong: An investigation of influences after air pollution control strategies

    Vehicular emission is one of the important anthropogenic pollution sources for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Four characterization campaigns were conducted at a representative urban roadside environment in Hong Kong between May 2011 and February 2012. Carbon monoxide (CO) and VOCs including methane (CH4), non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs), halocarbons, and alkyl nitrates were quantified. Both mixing ratios and compositions of the target VOCs show ignorable seasonal variations. Except CO, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tracers of propane, i-butane and n-butane are the three most abundant VOCs, which increased significantly as compared with the data measured at the same location in 2003. Meanwhile, the mixing ratios of diesel- and gasoline tracers such as ethyne, alkenes, aromatics, halogenated, and nitrated hydrocarbons decreased by at least of 37%. The application of advanced multivariate receptor modeling technique of positive matrix factorization (PMF) evidenced that the LPG fuel consumption is the largest pollution source, accounting for 60 ± 5% of the total quantified VOCs at the roadside location. The sum of ozone formation potential (OFP) for the target VOCs was 300.9 μg-O3 m-3, which was 47% lower than the value of 567.3 μg-O3 m-3 measured in 2003. The utilization of LPG as fuel in public transport (i.e., taxis and mini-buses) contributed 51% of the sum of OFP, significantly higher than the contributions from gasoline- (16%) and diesel-fueled (12%) engine emissions. Our results demonstrated the effectiveness of the switch from diesel to LPG-fueled engine for taxis and mini-buses implemented by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government between the recent ten years, in additional to the execution of substitution to LPG-fueled engine and restrictions of the vehicular emissions in compliance with the updated European emission standards

    Magnetically tunable properties related with carriers density in self-doped La1−xMnO3/y wt %Nb-SrTiO3 heteroepitaxial junctions

    The self-doped La1−xMnO3 (x=0.1 and 0.3) thin films deposited on Nb-doped (wt % y) SrTiO3 (y=0.05 and 0.8) crystals to form heteroepitaxial junctions have been prepared by the pulse laser deposition method. The current-voltage loops of junction were measured at several fixed magnetic fields for the temperature from 10 to 300 K. We have focused on the effects of doping level and annealing time on the magnetically tunable property of the junction. The results show that these junctions have a typical temperature-dependent rectifying characteristics and asymmetrical hysteresis. The magnetically tunable property of the junction was related with the annealing time for the self-doped La1−xMnO3−δ thin film and the doping level in the Nb-doped SrTiO3 (STON) crystal. In the self-doped La0.9MnO3/0.05-STON junction annealed at 900 °C for 5 h, the relative ratio of voltage [Vb(0)−Vb(H)] /Vb(0) is about 70% at H=6 T and T=70 K for I=0.1 mA, showing a large magnetically tunable property.     Effect of applied magnetic field on the rectifying characteristics in self-doped La0.9MnO3/0.8 wt %Nb-SrTiO3 heteroepitaxial junctions

    The epitaxial self-doped La0.9MnO3 thin film was deposited on a 0.8 wt %Nb-doped SrTiO3 substrate by pulse laser deposition method to form a bilayer p-n junction with an area of 8 mm2. The isothermal current-voltage loops measured from 10 to 380 K with an interval of 10 K in applied magnetic fields up to 7 T show typical temperature-dependent rectifying characteristic and asymmetrical hysteresis. The effect of magnetic field on the rectifying property is very small for the temperature above 150 K and a strong asymmetrical effect on the rectifying property below 150 K. In the low temperature region, although the diffusive voltage Vd is not affected by the applied magnetic field, the breakdown voltage Vb decreases with the increasing of magnetic field. At 10 K, the relative ratio of voltage [Vb(0)−Vb(7 T)]/Vb(0) is about 14%, showing a magnetically tunable property.     Influence of silencing the MC4R gene by lentivirusmediated RNA interference in bovine fibroblast cells

    Melanocortin receptor 4 (MC4R) is a key element in the mechanisms used to regulate both aspects of keeping the balance between energy uptake and energy expenditure. MC4R was knocked down by lentivirus-mediated shRNA expressing plasmids, which were controlled by the U6 promoter in bovine fibroblast cells, and the expression of MC4R was examined by the real time-PCR and Western blot analysis. Real time-PCR analysis was used to characterize the expression of Leptin, POMC, AGRP, MC3R and NPY gene. The relative genes [leptin, proopiomelanocortin (POMC), agouti-related peptide (AGRP), MC3R and neuropeptide Y (NPY)] expression level seemed to be closely associated with the MC4R gene in bovine fibroblast cell lines (BFCs). The levels of both MC4R mRNA and protein were significantly reduced by RNA interference (RNAi) mediated knockdown of MC4R in BFCs cells transfected with plasmid-based MC4R-specific shRNAs. The finding of this study demonstrated that vector based siRNA expression systems were an efficient approach to the knockdown of the MC4R gene expression in bovine fibroblast cells and they provided a new molecular basis for understanding the relationship of MC4R and other genes, which were responsible for the regulation of energy homeostasis by the melanocortin system.Key words: Melanocortin receptor 4 (MC4R), RNAi, bovine fibroblast cells, energy homeostasis

    Immune cascades in human intervertebral disc: the pros and cons

    The unique structural hallmark of the intervertebral disc has made its central composition, the nucleus pulposus (NP), excluded from the immunologic tolerance. Consequently, the intervertebral disc is identified as an immune-privileged organ. Traditionally, local detrimental immune activities caused by NP at the lesion sites of the disc are noted as a significant factor contributing to disc degeneration. However, given the beneficial activities of immune cells in other immune-privileged sites on basis of current evidence, the degenerate disc might need the assistance of a subpopulation of immune cells to restore its structure and lessen inflammation. In addition, the beneficial impact of immune cells can be seen in the absorption of the herniated NP, which is an important factor causes the mechanical compression of nerve roots. Consequently, a modulated immune network in degenerate disc is essential for the restoration of this immune-privileged organ. Until now, the understandings of immune response in disc degeneration still rest on the harmful aspect. Further studies are needed to explore its beneficial influence. Accordingly, there are no absolutely the pros and cons in terms of immune reactions caused by NP.published_or_final_versio
