    A Novel Ultrasound-based Measure of the Liver among Diabetes Mellitus Type II Patients

    Diabetes mellitus type II (DM II) or adult onset diabetes is due to the inefficient use of insulin, which affects various organs and tissues. Patients with DM II are at risk of suffering non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) that can later develop into more life threating forms such as hepatomegaly, cirrhosis or liver cancer. Following the logic of the non-inferiority trial test, we aim to establish a more accurate anatomical measure of the right liver lobe (RLL) to facilitate close monitoring of liver size with ultrasound (US). We hypothesize that US is not unacceptably worse than computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to accurately and reliably measure the size of the RLL when the measure is taken in the midaxillary line and craniocaudal plane (MAL-CC). Therefore, the objective of this study is to conduct a non-inferiority trial to test our novel MAL-CC measure. To meet this aim, US measure of the RLL was taken from DM II (n=7) and non-DM II (n=5) patients, whom were recruited from 2 endocrinology clinics at SoM-UPR. Preliminary data shows that MAL-CC measure of the RLL from non-DM II patients is 13.99 + 2.53 cm whereas the same measurement among DM II patients is 15.25 + 3.25 cm (Mann-Whitney U test, p= 0.42). It is concluded that there is a non-significant trend for large RLL sizes among DM II patients. Future work aims to increase sample size and to validate our novel measurement with MRI

    Abraded Glass Strength: An Ad Hoc Fitting Protocol Based on the Change of Variable Theorem

    This work tackles the problem of finding a suitable statistical model to describe relevant glass properties, such as the strength under tensile stress. As known, glass is a brittle material, whose strength is strictly related to the presence of microcracks on its surface. The main issue is that the number of cracks, their size, and orientation are of random nature, and they may even change over time, due to abrasion phenomena. Consequently, glass strength should be statistically treated, but unfortunately none of the known probability distributions properly fit experimental data, when measured on abraded and/or aged glass panes. Owing to these issues, this paper proposes an innovative method to analyze the statistical properties of glass. The method takes advantage of the change of variable theorem and uses an ad-hoc transforming function to properly account for the distortion, on the original probability distribution of the glass strength, induced by the abrasion process. The adopted transforming function is based on micromechanical theory, and it provides an optimal fit of the experimental data

    A response surface methodology approach to improve nitrogen use efficiency in maize by an optimal mycorrhiza-to-Bacillus co-inoculation rate

    Co-inoculation of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and bacteria can synergically and potentially increase nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in plants, thus, reducing nitrogen (N) fertilizers use and their environmental impact. However, limited research is available on AMF-bacteria interaction, and the definition of synergisms or antagonistic effects is unexplored. In this study, we adopted a response surface methodology (RSM) to assess the optimal combination of AMF (Rhizoglomus irregulare and Funneliformis mosseae) and Bacillus megaterium (a PGPR—plant growth promoting rhizobacteria) formulations to maximize agronomical and chemical parameters linked to N utilization in maize (Zea mays L.). The fitted mathematical models, and also 3D response surface and contour plots, allowed us to determine the optimal AMF and bacterial doses, which are approximately accorded to 2.1 kg ha–1 of both formulations. These levels provided the maximum values of SPAD, aspartate, and glutamate. On the contrary, agronomic parameters were not affected, except for the nitrogen harvest index (NHI), which was slightly affected (p-value of < 0.10) and indicated a higher N accumulation in grain following inoculation with 4.1 and 0.1 kg ha–1 of AMF and B. megaterium, respectively. Nonetheless, the identification of the saddle points for asparagine and the tendency to differently allocate N when AMF or PGPR were used alone, pointed out the complexity of microorganism interaction and suggests the need for further investigations aimed at unraveling the mechanisms underlying this symbiosis

    Testing Gibrat's law in Italian macro-regions: Analysis on a panel of mechanical companies

    The present paper deals with the question whether "Gibrat's law" is applicable to Italian mechanical companies active between 1997 and 1999 or not. The analysis was carried out at a spatial level splitting companies in four macro-regions: North-West, North-East, Centre and South. On the basis of a set of descriptive and inferential tools, we find that firm size, measured by total assets, follows approximately a log-normal distribution in at least two of the four analyzed macro-regions. Nevertheless log-normality is only one necessary but not sufficient condition for the validity of the Gibrat's law. Thus we analyzed the influence of firm size on growth rate finding a negative relation between the two variables in all macro-regions. This is a clear violation of Gibrat's law. Another violation was found by the application of an econometric model which evidences the persistence of growth. © Springer-Verlag 2005
