It is necessary to be aware that the global economy will not be able to grow at the actual speed in the long term. A paradigm shift in production and consumption is therefore necessary to avoid the collapse of ecosystems and the concurrent reduction of stocks of natural resources. This is the reason why capitalism has to take a new direction towards a sustainable and naturally harmonized development model

    Presence of Candida zemplinina in Sicilian Musts and Selection of a Strain for Wine Mixed Fermentations

    The purpose of this work was to investigate the presence of C. zemplinina yeasts in Sicilian musts andgrapes and to identify strains of oenological interest. We report on the taxonomical reclassificationof Candida yeast isolates from Sicilian musts and on the selection of one strain of oenological interest(Cz3), based on mixed micro-fermentation experiments in sterile Nero d’Avola musts. Our results showthat Candida zemplinina is abundant in Sicilian grapes and musts, and that the Cz3 strain is suitablefor Candida zemplinina/Saccharomyces cerevisiae mixed fermentations. The higher glycerol content andthe lower ethanol level stood out as the most promising features of the wines obtained upon sequentialinoculation of the Cz3 and (S. cerevisiae) NDA21 yeast starters. We therefore have isolated a Sicilian Czstrain endowed with very promising features for the future development of mixed fermentation protocols

    Transcatheter heart valve implantation in bicuspid patients with self-expanding device

    Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) patients are conventionally not treated by transcathether aortic valve implantation (TAVI) because of anatomic constraint with unfavorable outcome. Patient-specific numerical simulation of TAVI in BAV may predict important clinical insights to assess the con-formability of the transcathether heart valves (THV) implanted on the aortic root of members of this challenging patient population. We aimed to develop a computational approach and virtually simulate TAVI in a group of n.6 stenotic BAV patients using the self-expanding Evolut Pro THV. Specif-ically, the structural mechanics were evaluated by a finite-element model to estimate the deformed THV configuration in the oval bicuspid anatomy. Then, a fluid–solid interaction analysis based on the smoothed-particle hydrodynamics (SPH) technique was adopted to quantify the blood-flow patterns as well as the regions at high risk of paravalvular leakage (PVL). Simulations demonstrated a slight asymmetric and elliptical expansion of the THV stent frame in the BAV anatomy. The contact pressure between the luminal aortic root surface and the THV stent frame was determined to quantify the device anchoring force at the level of the aortic annulus and mid-ascending aorta. At late diastole, PVL was found in the gap between the aortic wall and THV stent frame. Though the modeling framework was not validated by clinical data, this study could be considered a further step towards the use of numerical simulations for the assessment of TAVI in BAV, aiming at understanding patients not suitable for device implantation on an anatomic basis

    Shift in critical temperature for random spatial permutations with cycle weights

    We examine a phase transition in a model of random spatial permutations which originates in a study of the interacting Bose gas. Permutations are weighted according to point positions; the low-temperature onset of the appearance of arbitrarily long cycles is connected to the phase transition of Bose-Einstein condensates. In our simplified model, point positions are held fixed on the fully occupied cubic lattice and interactions are expressed as Ewens-type weights on cycle lengths of permutations. The critical temperature of the transition to long cycles depends on an interaction-strength parameter α\alpha. For weak interactions, the shift in critical temperature is expected to be linear in α\alpha with constant of linearity cc. Using Markov chain Monte Carlo methods and finite-size scaling, we find c=0.618±0.086c = 0.618 \pm 0.086. This finding matches a similar analytical result of Ueltschi and Betz. We also examine the mean longest cycle length as a fraction of the number of sites in long cycles, recovering an earlier result of Shepp and Lloyd for non-spatial permutations.Comment: v2 incorporated reviewer comments. v3 removed two extraneous figures which appeared at the end of the PDF

    Solitary intrathyroidal metastasis of renal clear cell carcinoma in a toxic substernal multinodular goiter.

    INTRODUCTION: Thyroid gland is a rare site of clinically detectable tumor metastasis. CASE REPORT: A 71-year-old woman was referred to our department for an evaluation of toxic multinodular substernal goiter. She had a history of renal clear cell carcinoma of the left kidney, which had been resected 2 years previously. US confirmed the multinodular goiter. Total thyroidectomy with neuromonitoring was performed on March 2008. A histological examination revealed a solitary metastasis of a clear cell renal cancer in a diffuse multinodular goiter. No distant metastases are detected. CONCLUSION: Although uncommon, it is important for the endocrine surgeon and endocrine oncologist to be able to recognize and differentiate intrathyroid metastases from more primary common thyroid neoplasms. The diagnosis can be suspected if the patient has a thyroid tumor and a past history of extrathyroid cancer. These tumors, on the whole, tend to behave more aggressively and, in most cases, the use of multimodality therapy is recommende

    Phase transitions for PP-adic Potts model on the Cayley tree of order three

    In the present paper, we study a phase transition problem for the qq-state pp-adic Potts model over the Cayley tree of order three. We consider a more general notion of pp-adic Gibbs measure which depends on parameter \rho\in\bq_p. Such a measure is called {\it generalized pp-adic quasi Gibbs measure}. When ρ\rho equals to pp-adic exponent, then it coincides with the pp-adic Gibbs measure. When ρ=p\rho=p, then it coincides with pp-adic quasi Gibbs measure. Therefore, we investigate two regimes with respect to the value of ρp|\rho|_p. Namely, in the first regime, one takes ρ=expp(J)\rho=\exp_p(J) for some J\in\bq_p, in the second one ρp<1|\rho|_p<1. In each regime, we first find conditions for the existence of generalized pp-adic quasi Gibbs measures. Furthermore, in the first regime, we establish the existence of the phase transition under some conditions. In the second regime, when ˚p,qpp2|\r|_p,|q|_p\leq p^{-2} we prove the existence of a quasi phase transition. It turns out that if ˚p<q1p2<1|\r|_p<|q-1|_p^2<1 and \sqrt{-3}\in\bq_p, then one finds the existence of the strong phase transition.Comment: 27 page

    On the Material Constitutive Behavior of the Aortic Root in Patients with Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation

    Background: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat patients with severe aortic valve stenosis. However, there is limited knowledge on the material properties of the aortic root in TAVI patients, and this can impact the credibility of computer simulations. This study aimed to develop a non-invasive inverse approach for estimating reliable material constituents for the aortic root and calcified valve leaflets in patients undergoing TAVI. Methods: The identification of material parameters is based on the simultaneous minimization of two cost functions, which define the difference between model predictions and cardiac-gated CT measurements of the aortic wall and valve orifice area. Validation of the inverse analysis output was performed comparing the numerical predictions with actual CT shapes and post-TAVI measures of implanted device diameter. Results: A good agreement of the peak systolic shape of the aortic wall was found between simulations and imaging, with similarity index in the range in the range of 83.7% to 91.5% for n.20 patients. Not any statistical difference was observed between predictions and CT measures of orifice area for the stenotic aortic valve. After TAVI simulations, the measurements of SAPIEN 3 Ultra (S3) device diameter were in agreement with those from post-TAVI angio-CT imaging. A sensitivity analysis demonstrated a modest impact on the S3 diameters when altering the elastic material property of the aortic wall in the range of inverse analysis solution. Conclusions: Overall, this study demonstrates the feasibility and potential benefits of using non-invasive imaging techniques and computational modeling to estimate material properties in patients undergoing TAVI

    Advancements in Designing the DEMO Driver Blanket System at the EU DEMO Pre-Conceptual Design Phase: Overview, Challenges and Opportunities

    The EU conducted the pre-conceptual design (PCD) phase of the demonstration reactor (DEMO) during 2014–2020 under the framework of the EUROfusion consortium. The current strategy of DEMO design is to bridge the breeding blanket (BB) technology gaps between ITER and a commercial fusion power plant (FPP) by playing the role of a “Component Test Facility” for the BB. Within this strategy, a so-called driver blanket, with nearly full in-vessel surface coverage, will aim at achieving high-level stakeholder requirements of tritium self-sufficiency and power extraction for net electricity production with rather conventional technology and/or operational parameters, while an advanced blanket (or several of them) will aim at demonstrating, with limited coverage, features that are deemed necessary for a commercial FPP. Currently, two driver blanket candidates are being investigated for the EU DEMO, namely the water-cooled lithium lead and the helium-cooled pebble bed breeding blanket concepts. The PCD phase has been characterized not only by the detailed design of the BB systems themselves, but also by their holistic integration in DEMO, prioritizing near-term solutions, in accordance with the idea of a driver blanket. This paper summarizes the status for both BB driver blanket candidates at the end of the PCD phase, including their corresponding tritium extraction and removal (TER) systems, underlining the main achievements and lessons learned, exposing outstanding key system design and R&D challenges and presenting identified opportunities to address those risks during the conceptual design (CD) phase that started in 2021
