Electron acceleration by cascading reconnection in the solar corona I Magnetic gradient and curvature effects

Aims: We investigate the electron acceleration in convective electric fields of cascading magnetic reconnection in a flaring solar corona and show the resulting hard X-ray (HXR) radiation spectra caused by Bremsstrahlung for the coronal source. Methods: We perform test particle calculation of electron motions in the framework of a guiding center approximation. The electromagnetic fields and their derivatives along electron trajectories are obtained by linearly interpolating the results of high-resolution adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) MHD simulations of cascading magnetic reconnection. Hard X-ray (HXR) spectra are calculated using an optically thin Bremsstrahlung model. Results: Magnetic gradients and curvatures in cascading reconnection current sheet accelerate electrons: trapped in magnetic islands, precipitating to the chromosphere and ejected into the interplanetary space. The final location of an electron is determined by its initial position, pitch angle and velocity. These initial conditions also influence electron acceleration efficiency. Most of electrons have enhanced perpendicular energy. Trapped electrons are considered to cause the observed bright spots along coronal mass ejection CME-trailing current sheets as well as the flare loop-top HXR emissions.Comment: submitted to A&

Frequency-sweep examination for wave mode identification in multimodal ultrasonic guided wave signal

    Get PDF
This article has been made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund.Ultrasonic guided waves can be used to assess and monitor long elements of a structure from a single position. The greatest challenges for any guided wave system are the plethora of wave modes arising from the geometry of the structural element which propagate with a range of frequency-dependent velocities and the interpretation of these combined signals reflected by discontinuities in the structural element. In this paper, a novel signal processing technique is presented using a combination of frequency-sweep measurement, sampling rate conversion, and Fourier transform. The technique is applied to synthesized and experimental data to identify different modes in complex ultrasonic guided wave signals. It is demonstrated throughout the paper that the technique also has the capability to derive the time of flight and group velocity dispersion curve of different wave modes in field inspections. © 2014 IEEE

A Trigeminoreticular Pathway: Implications in Pain

Neurons in the caudalmost ventrolateral medulla (cmVLM) respond to noxious stimulation. We previously have shown most efferent projections from this locus project to areas implicated either in the processing or modulation of pain. Here we show the cmVLM of the rat receives projections from superficial laminae of the medullary dorsal horn (MDH) and has neurons activated with capsaicin injections into the temporalis muscle. Injections of either biotinylated dextran amine (BDA) into the MDH or fluorogold (FG)/fluorescent microbeads into the cmVLM showed projections from lamina I and II of the MDH to the cmVLM. Morphometric analysis showed the retrogradely-labeled neurons were small (area 88.7 µm2±3.4) and mostly fusiform in shape. Injections (20–50 µl) of 0.5% capsaicin into the temporalis muscle and subsequent immunohistochemistry for c-Fos showed nuclei labeled in the dorsomedial trigeminocervical complex (TCC), the cmVLM, the lateral medulla, and the internal lateral subnucleus of the parabrachial complex (PBil). Additional labeling with c-Fos was seen in the subnucleus interpolaris of the spinal trigeminal nucleus, the rostral ventrolateral medulla, the superior salivatory nucleus, the rostral ventromedial medulla, and the A1, A5, A7 and subcoeruleus catecholamine areas. Injections of FG into the PBil produced robust label in the lateral medulla and cmVLM while injections of BDA into the lateral medulla showed projections to the PBil. Immunohistochemical experiments to antibodies against substance P, the substance P receptor (NK1), calcitonin gene regulating peptide, leucine enkephalin, VRL1 (TPRV2) receptors and neuropeptide Y showed that these peptides/receptors densely stained the cmVLM. We suggest the MDH- cmVLM projection is important for pain from head and neck areas. We offer a potential new pathway for regulating deep pain via the neurons of the TCC, the cmVLM, the lateral medulla, and the PBil and propose these areas compose a trigeminoreticular pathway, possibly the trigeminal homologue of the spinoreticulothalamic pathway

Spin orbit torque induced asymmetric depinning of chiral Néel domain wall in Co/Ni heterostructures

    Get PDF
In this letter, we report on distinct depinning of a chiral Néel domain wall (DW) driven by spin-orbit torque (SOT) in Co/Ni nanowires with symmetric potential barriers. In these structures, DW propagation was shown to be in the opposite direction to the electron flow as evidenced from current assisted DW depinning measurements. A transition from field dominated DW depinning to SOT dominated DW depinning was observed as the bias current was increased. For SOT dominated DW depinning, the Up-Down DW exhibits a larger depinning field as compared to the Down-Up DW. This is attributed to the interplay between the SOT and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in the structure

Bulge formation from SSCs in a responding cuspy dark matter halo

We simulate the bulge formation in very late-type dwarf galaxies from circumnuclear super star clusters (SSCs) moving in a responding cuspy dark matter halo (DMH). The simulations show that (1) the response of DMH to sinking of SSCs is detectable only in the region interior to about 200 pc. The mean logarithmic slope of the responding DM density profile over that area displays two different phases: the very early descent followed by ascent till approaching to 1.2 at the age of 2 Gyrs. (2) the detectable feedbacks of the DMH response on the bulge formation turned out to be very small, in the sense that the formed bulges and their paired nuclear cusps in the fixed and the responding DMH are basically the same, both are consistent with HSTHST observations. (3) the yielded mass correlation of bulges to their nuclear (stellar) cusps and the time evolution of cusps' mass are accordance with recent findings on relevant relations. In combination with the consistent effective radii of nuclear cusps with observed quantities of nuclear clusters, we believe that the bulge formation scenario that we proposed could be a very promising mechanism to form nuclear clusters.Comment: 27 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

Asymmetrical domain wall propagation in bifurcated PMA wire structure due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

    Get PDF
Controlling domain wall (DW) motion in complex magnetic network structures is of paramount significance for the development of spin-based devices. Here, we report on the dynamics of a propagating DW in a bifurcated ferromagnetic wire with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in the wire structure induces a tilt angle to the injected DW, which leads to a quasi-selective propagation through the network branch. The DW tilting causes a field interval between DWs to arrive at Hall bars in the individual branches. Micromagnetic results further show that by tailoring the strength of the DMI, the control of DW dynamics in the PMA complex network structures can be achieved

Scaling of the time-mean characteristics in the polygonal cylinder near-wake

    Get PDF
The near wake of the polygonal cylinder with the side number N = 3 ~ ∞ is systematically studied based on particle image velocimetry (PIV) and load-cell measurements. Each cylinder is examined for two orientations, with either one leading side or leading corner. The Reynolds number Re = (1.0 ∼ 6.0) × 104 , defined by the longitudinally projected cylinder width. The dependence of the wake characteristic parameters on the cylinder orientation and N is discussed, and wake scaling analysis is conducted based on these parameters. It is found that the velocity deficit and half width of the wake scale well with the reverse flow zone length and recirculation bubble width, whilst the Strouhal number, drag and fluctuating lift coefficients scale well with the vortex formation length and wake width. The unveiled scaling relationships cast insight into the intrinsic physical connections between the aerodynamic forces and vortex formation and between the polygonal cylinder wakes of N = 3 ~ ∞, suggesting that the understanding of the time-mean wake behind individual polygonal cylinder can be unified to that of the circular cylinder wake
