The capital stock of the Spanish economy 1900-1958

This paper provides an estimate of the Spanish stock of physical capital between 1900 and 1958 in 1990 constant pesetas. The series is directly based on the progress made by the quantitative economic history in Spain during the last decade. An additional contribution of the paper is to present the capital/product and capital/labor ratio trends during the period considered. El documento ofrece una estimación del stock de capital físico español durante el periodo 1900-1958 en pesetas constantes de 1990. La serie se basa directamente en el progreso en España de la historia económica cuantitativa durante la última década. Continuities and discontinuities in the economic growth of Spain: 1850-1936

The Spanish pattern of economic growth during the last two centuries is quite unique. In the nineteenth century, Spain remained outside the process of industrialization, but during the twentieth century it has joined the small group of developed economies. This article checks the possible existence of discontinuities between 1850-1936 in the series of PNB, industrial production and private and public investment by utilizing recent developments in the econometric analysis associated with the work of Perron and Ziwot and Andrews. The results confirm the continuity of the Spanish growth during the long period considered. However, they also show two breakpoint years: 1870 in the series of industrial production and 1919 in the data of public investment. El crecimiento económico en España durante los dos últimos siglos, ha sido un proceso singular. Durante el siglo XIX su economía quedó al margen del proceso de industrialización, pero durante el XX ha conseguido incorporarse al reducido grupo de los países desarrollados. Aprovechando algunos de los recientes avances de la econometría asociados a los trabajos de Perron y Ziwot y Andews, este artículo contrasta, para la etapa 1850-1936, la posible existencia de rupturas en las series de PNB, producción industrial e inversión pública y privada. Los resultados confirman la continuidad básica del crecimiento económico español en el largo plazo. Realities of and perspectives for languages in the globalised world: Can language teaching survive the inadequacies of policies implemented today at Leeds Beckett University?

Various newspaper articles report that British ministers, university representatives, exam chiefs and business bodies agree that foreign languages skills in primary, secondary and tertiary UK education are in crisis. Lower funding and policy changes have caused language skills deficiencies felt gravely in the business sectors. Funding and support initiatives pledged by policy makers appear to be election-driven, barely outliving newly elected governments. Others blame secondary school language curriculum for failing to inspire students to take up a language when they reach 13 or 14. Others still argue that severe A-level examinations marking deters students from taking up a foreign language at 6th form level, producing fewer prospective language learners for university departments. Community languages are also undervalued as small-entry languages could soon be axed from GCSE and A-level examinations. In a world increasingly interconnected, it is essential the importance of language learning be reinstated in all our educational institutions. This paper reviews two decades of the conditions of language provision in the UK in general, with an emphasis on Leeds Beckett University. It also attempts to answer two questions emerging form the author’s personal teaching experience and reflections: What are the realities and challenges language teaching faces at Leeds Beckett University? And, how may we support language learners in fulfilling their ambition to acquire the required skills to communicate effectively in this globalised world

La política económica desarrollada por la dictadura del general Primo de Rivera ha sido objeto, durante los últimos años, de una atención considerable. Desde que el profesor Velarde publicara su pionera aportación, numerosos especialistas han abordado, desde distintas perspectivas y con una valoración también divergente, el estudio de las principales medidas económicas adoptadas por el régimen autoritario durante los siete años en que estuvo en el poder. En todas ellas, sin embargo, se ha tendido a reconocer una importancia notable a la gestión de las finanzas públicas. Water-deficit tolerance in citrus is mediated by the down regulation of PIP gene expresión in roots

Water deficit (WD) is a growing problem in agriculture. In citrus crops, genetically-determined characteristics of the rootstock are important factors in plant responses to WD. Aquaporins are involved in regulating the water supply to the plant by mediating water flow through the cell membranes. Recent studies support a direct role for aquaporins in plant water relations and demonstrate their involvement in tolerance to WD. This study investigates the relationship between photosynthetic and water-balance parameters with levels of expression of aquaporins in conditions of moderate WD in the rootstocks Poncirus trifoliata (L.) Raf. (PT), Cleopatra Mandarin (Citrus reshni Hort. ex Tan.) (CM) and 030115 (a hybrid of the two former rootstocks). Under conditions of WD, the hybrid 030115 drastically reduced aquaporin expression, accompanied by a loss of plant vigour but without reducing the net CO2 assimilation (ACO2). PT maintained the same level of aquaporin expression under WD as under normal irrigation conditions, but suffered a sharp reduction in ACO2. CM, which has lower expression of aquaporins than PT under both normal irrigation conditions and WD, responded better to water stress conditions than PT. Thus, low levels of aquaporins, or repression of their expression, accompanied by decreased plant vigour resulted in a decrease in plasma membrane permeability, thereby facilitating water retention in the cells under conditions of water stress. Desde los años noventa, cuando las herramientas unidireccionales de transmisión del mensaje político comenzaron a evidenciar síntomas de agotamiento (Maarek, 1997), el progresivo desarrollo de las tecnologías de la información y la comunicación viene facilitando la incorporación a la comunicación electoral de nuevos canales de comunicación directa, interactivos y en ocasiones bidireccionales, desde la página web hasta el blogging, el microblogging o las comunidades virtuales. El presente artículo ofrece un análisis cuantitativo del uso que realizaron de ellos los cabezas de lista provinciales del PP y del PSOE en las Elecciones Generales de 2011.Since the 1990s, once the unidirectional tools of political message transmission started to show exhaustion symptoms (Maarek, 1997), the information and communication technologies ongoing development are facilitating the incorporation of new channels of direct, interactive and, sometimes, bidirectional communication into political campaign communication such as webpages, blogging, microblogging or virtual communities. Los estudios sobre la comunicación han atribuido tradicionalmente a los medios de masas tres funciones básicas: informar, formar y entretener. Mar de Fontcuberta (1993), catedrática de Periodismo, explica que la función del periodismo es reflejar la realidad (informar), interpretarla (formar) y ocuparse del ocio (entretener).
