A forecast of demand for telecommunications services through the year 2000 is presented with particular reference to demand for satellite communications. Estimates of demand are provided for voice, video, and data services and for various subcategories of these services. The results are converted to a common digital measure in terms of terabits per year and aggregated to obtain total demand projections

Demand for telecommunications services is forecasted for the period 1980-2000, with particular reference to that portion of the demand associated with satellite communications. Overall demand for telecommunications is predicted to increase by a factor of five over the period studied and the satellite portion of demand will increase even more rapidly. Traffic demand is separately estimated for voice, video, and data services and is also described as a function of distance traveled and city size. The satellite component of projected demand is compared with the capacity available in the C and Ku satellite bands and it is projected that new satellite technology and the implementation of Ka band transmission will be needed in the decade of the 1990's

The applicability of these forecasts to assessment of demand for the 30/20 GHz fixed communications system is analyzed. Costs for the 30/20 satellite trunking systems are presented and compared with the cost of terrestrial communications
Review of the International Commission on Trichinellosis Workshop on Surveillance for Trichinella
The International Commission on Trichinellosis (ICT) provides science-based advice on the subject of Trichinella. In May 2013, the ICT held a workshop with one goal of developing recommendations on surveillance for Trichinella that could contribute to classifying the public health risk of pork from defined compartments or regions. This workshop was initiated based on discussions at the national and international levels regarding best practices for assuring pork safety relative to Trichinella
The development and application of aerodynamic uncertainties: And flight test verification for the space shuttle orbiter
The approach used in establishing the predicted aerodynamic uncertainties and the process used in applying these uncertainties during the design of the Orbiter flight control system and the entry trajectories are presented. The flight test program that was designed to verify the stability and control derivatives with a minimum of test flights is presented and a comparison of preflight predictions with preliminary flight test results is made. It is concluded that the approach used for the Orbiter is applicable to future programs where testing is limited due to time constraints or funding
Trichinae Certification in the United States Pork Industry
We report here on progress in the Trichinae Certification pilot program. This program uses an on-farm auditing system to document good production practices (GPPs) for swine relative to the risk of exposure to Trichinella spiralis. The pilot phase of this program continues while regulations to establish it as an official USDA program are being developed. Launch of the Trichinae Certification Program in the United States is expected to take place when regulations are finalized within the next year. Transport through an impurity tunnel coupled to a Si/SiGe quantum dot
Achieving controllable coupling of dopants in silicon is crucial for
operating donor-based qubit devices, but it is difficult because of the small
size of donor-bound electron wavefunctions. Here we report the characterization
of a quantum dot coupled to a localized electronic state, and we present
evidence of controllable coupling between the quantum dot and the localized
state. A set of measurements of transport through this device enable the
determination of the most likely location of the localized state, consistent
with an electronically active impurity in the quantum well near the edge of the
quantum dot. The experiments we report are consistent with a gate-voltage
controllable tunnel coupling, which is an important building block for hybrid
donor and gate-defined quantum dot devices.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Time-resolved broadband analysis of slow-light propagation and superluminal transmission of electromagnetic waves in three-dimensional photonic crystals
A time-resolved analysis of the amplitude and phase of THz pulses propagating
through three-dimensional photonic crystals is presented. Single-cycle pulses
of THz radiation allow measurements over a wide frequency range, spanning more
than an octave below, at and above the bandgap of strongly dispersive photonic
crystals. Transmission data provide evidence for slow group velocities at the
photonic band edges and for superluminal transmission at frequencies in the
gap. Our experimental results are in good agreement with
finite-difference-time-domain simulations.Comment: 7 pages, 11 figure
Doing challenging research studies in a patient centred way: qualitative study to inform a randomised controlled trial in the paediatric emergency care setting
Objective: To inform the design of a randomised controlled trial (called EcLiPSE) to improve the treatment of children with convulsive status epilepticus (CSE). EcLiPSE requires the use of a controversial deferred consent process. Design: Qualitative interview and focus group study. Setting: 8 UK support groups for parents of children who have chronic or acute health conditions and experience of paediatric emergency care. Participants: 17 parents, of whom 11 participated in telephone interviews (10 mothers, 1 father) and 6 in a focus group (5 mothers, 1 father). 6 parents (35%) were bereaved and 7 (41%) had children who had experienced seizures, including CSE. Results: Most parents had not heard of deferred consent, yet they supported its use to enable the progress of emergency care research providing a child's safety was not compromised by the research. Parents were reassured by tailored explanation, which focused their attention on aspects of EcLiPSE that addressed their priorities and concerns. These aspects included the safety of the interventions under investigation and how both EcLiPSE interventions are used in routine clinical practice. Parents made recommendations about the appropriate timing of a recruitment discussion, the need to individualise approaches to recruiting bereaved parents and the use of clear written information. Conclusions: Our study provided information to help ensure that a challenging trial was patient centred in its design. We will use our findings to help EcLiPSE practitioners to: discuss potentially threatening trial safety information with parents, use open-ended questions and prompts to identify their priorities and concerns and clarify related aspects of written trial information to assist understanding and decision-making
