    Magnetic Reversal Time in Open Long Range Systems

    Topological phase space disconnection has been recently found to be a general phenomenon in isolated anisotropic spin systems. It sets a general framework to understand the emergence of ferromagnetism in finite magnetic systems starting from microscopic models without phenomenological on-site barriers. Here we study its relevance for finite systems with long range interacting potential in contact with a thermal bath. We show that, even in this case, the induced magnetic reversal time is exponentially large in the number of spins, thus determining {\it stable} (to any experimental observation time) ferromagnetic behavior. Moreover, the explicit temperature dependence of the magnetic reversal time obtained from the microcanonical results, is found to be in good agreement with numerical simulations. Also, a simple and suggestive expression, indicating the Topological Energy Threshold at which the disconnection occurs, as a real energy barrier for many body systems, is obtained analytically for low temperature

    Ab initio study of canted magnetism of finite atomic chains at surfaces

    By using ab initio methods on different levels we study the magnetic ground state of (finite) atomic wires deposited on metallic surfaces. A phenomenological model based on symmetry arguments suggests that the magnetization of a ferromagnetic wire is aligned either normal to the wire and, generally, tilted with respect to the surface normal or parallel to the wire. From a first principles point of view, this simple model can be best related to the so--called magnetic force theorem calculations being often used to explore magnetic anisotropy energies of bulk and surface systems. The second theoretical approach we use to search for the canted magnetic ground state is first principles adiabatic spin dynamics extended to the case of fully relativistic electron scattering. First, for the case of two adjacent Fe atoms an a Cu(111) surface we demonstrate that the reduction of the surface symmetry can indeed lead to canted magnetism. The anisotropy constants and consequently the ground state magnetization direction are very sensitive to the position of the dimer with respect to the surface. We also performed calculations for a seven--atom Co chain placed along a step edge of a Pt(111) surface. As far as the ground state spin orientation is concerned we obtain excellent agreement with experiment.     HREELS study of 0, molecular chemisorption on Ag( 001)

    Abstract O2 adsorption on Ag(OO1) at 100 K has been investigated by HREELS. Contrary to previous reports we could resolve 4 oxygen related peaks, 3 of which are due to the internal stretching vibration as confirmed by isotope labelling. The lowest frequency mode at 63 meV is assigned to molecular oxygen chemisorbed at defect sites. The further two features are very close to each other in frequency, at 79 and 84 meV. We assign them to molecules chemisorbed in a peroxidic state in two different adsorption sites. Initially both sites are Mled simultaneously while at higher coverage adsorption in the higher frequency site is favoured

    Spin-Polarized STM for a Kondo adatom

    We investigate the bias dependence of the tunneling conductance between a spin-polarized (SP) scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip and the surface conduction states of a normal metal with a Kondo adatom. Quantum interference between tip-host metal and tip-adatom-host metal conduction paths is studied in the full range of the Fano parameter qq. The spin-polarized STM gives rise to a splitting of the Kondo peak and asymmetry in the zero-bias anomaly depending on the lateral tip-adatom distance. For increasing lateral distances, the Kondo peak-splitting shows a strong suppression and the spin-polarized conductance exhibits the standard Fano-Kondo profile.Comment: new version with improved discussion. added one figure. 12 pages (one-column) + 5 figure

    Spin and Charge Correlations in Quantum Dots: An Exact Solution

    The inclusion of charging and spin-exchange interactions within the Universal Hamiltonian description of quantum dots is challenging as it leads to a non-Abelian action. Here we present an {\it exact} analytical solution of the probem, in particular, in the vicinity of the Stoner instabilty point. We calculate several observables, including the tunneling density of states (TDOS) and the spin susceptibility. Near the instability point the TDOS exhibits a non-monotonous behavior as function of the tunneling energy, even at temperatures higher than the exchange energy. Our approach is generalizable to a broad set of observables, including the a.c. susceptibility and the absorption spectrum for anisotropic spin interaction. Our results could be tested in nearly ferromagnetic materials.Comment: JETPL class, 6 pages, 2 figure

    Trehalose administration in C57BL/6N old mice affects healthspan improving motor learning and brain anti-oxidant defences in a sex-dependent fashion: a pilot study

    Aim of this study was to characterize the effects of oral trehalose administration (2%w/v) on healthspan in old mice. Trehalose was administered in drinking water for 1 month to male and female C57BL/6N mice aged 25-months. After behavioral phenotyping (grip strength, beam walking and rotarod tests), autophagy (LC3-II/actin) and oxidative stress were tested in the cerebral cortex and gastrocnemius muscle. The latter parameter was indirectly assessed by evaluating carbonyl groups added to proteins as a result of oxidative reactions, in addition to central levels of NRF2 protein, a transcription factor that regulates the expression of antioxidant enzymes. In comparison with sex-matched controls, trehalose-treated males performed better in motor planning and coordination tasks. This behavioral phenotype was associated with an activation of the ubiquitin-proteasome system, autophagy and antioxidant defences in cerebral cortex. Independently from trehalose administration, females were characterized by better motor performance and showed higher levels of ubiquitinated proteins and NRF2 in cerebral cortex, suggesting an up-regulation of basal antioxidant defences. In conclusion, trehalose was effective in counteracting some aspects of age-related decay, with specific effects in male and female subjects

    Lacosamide monotherapy in clinical practice: A retrospective chart review

    Objective: To assess effectiveness and tolerability of first-line and conversion to lacosamide monotherapy for focal seizures. Materials and Methods: Retrospective, non-interventional chart review of lacosamide monotherapy patients aged ≥16 years in Europe. Outcomes included retention rate at observational point (OP) 3 (12 ± 3 months), seizure freedom rates at OP2 (6 ± 3 months) and OP3 and adverse drug reactions (ADRs). Results: A total of 439 patients were included (98 first-line and 341 conversion to monotherapy; 128 aged ≥65 years [25 first-line and 103 conversion to monotherapy]). First-line and conversion to monotherapy retention rates were 60.2% (59/98; 95% confidence interval [CI] 49.8%-70.0%) and 62.5% (213/341; 57.1%-67.6%), respectively. Kaplan-Meier estimates of 12-month retention rates were 81.2% and 91.4% for first-line and conversion to monotherapy, respectively. First-line and conversion to monotherapy retention rates in patients aged ≥65 years were 60.0% (38.7%-78.9%) and 68.9% (59.1%-77.7%), respectively. At OP2, 66.3% of first-line and 63.0% of conversion to monotherapy patients were seizure free. At OP3, 60.2% of first-line and 52.5% of conversion to monotherapy patients were seizure free. In the ≥65 years subgroup, seizure freedom rates at OP2 were 72.0% and 68.0% for first-line and converted to monotherapy, respectively, and at OP3, 68.0% and 56.3%, respectively. Overall, 52 of 439 (11.8%) patients reported ADRs (16.4% in ≥65 years subgroup), most commonly dizziness (5.0%), headache (2.1%) and somnolence (1.6%).
