Adaptive Bayesian Iterative Transmission Reconstruction for Attenuation Correction in Myocardial Perfusion Imaging with SPECT/Slow-Rotation Low-Output CT Systems
Objectives. SPECT/slow-rotation low-output CT systems can produce streak artifacts in filtered backprojection (FBP) attenuation maps, impacting attenuation correction (AC) in myocardial perfusion imaging. This paper presents an adaptive Bayesian iterative transmission reconstruction (ABITR) algorithm for more accurate AC. Methods. In each iteration, ABITR calculated a three-dimensional prior containing the pixels with attenuation coefficients similar to water, then used it to encourage these pixels to the water value. ABITR was tested with a cardiac phantom and 4 normal patients acquired by a GE Millennium VG/Hawkeye system. Results. FBP AC and ABITR AC produced similar phantom results. For the patients, streak artifacts were observed in the FBP and ordered-subsets expectation-maximization (OSEM) maps but not in the ABITR maps, and ABITR AC produced more uniform images than FBP AC and OSEM AC. Conclusion. ABITR can improve the quality of the attenuation map, producing more uniform images for normal studies
Detection of OH absorption against PSR B1849+00
We have searched for OH absorption against seven pulsars using the Arecibo
telescope. In both OH mainlines (at 1665 and 1667 MHz), deep and narrow
absorption features were detected toward PSR B1849+00. In addition, we have
detected several absorption and emission features against B33.6+0.1, a nearby
supernova remnant (SNR). The most interesting result of this study is that a
pencil-sharp absorption sample against the PSR differs greatly from the
large-angle absorption sample observed against the SNR. If both the PSR and the
SNR probe the same molecular cloud then this finding has important implications
for absorption studies of the molecular medium, as it shows that the statistics
of absorbing OH depends on the size of the background source. We also show that
the OH absorption against the PSR most likely originates from a small (<30
arcsec) and dense (>10^5 cm^-3) molecular clump.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures. Accepted for publication in Ap
Detecting sterile dark matter in space
Space-based instruments provide new and, in some cases, unique opportunities
to search for dark matter. In particular, if dark matter comprises sterile
neutrinos, the x ray detection of their decay line is the most promising
strategy for discovery. Sterile neutrinos with masses in the keV range could
solve several long-standing astrophysical puzzles, from supernova asymmetries
and the pulsar kicks to star formation, reionization, and baryogenesis. The
best current limits on sterile neutrinos come from Chandra and XMM-Newton.
Future advances can be achieved with a high-resolution x-ray spectrometry in

First direct observation of Dirac fermions in graphite
Originating from relativistic quantum field theory, Dirac fermions have been
recently applied to study various peculiar phenomena in condensed matter
physics, including the novel quantum Hall effect in graphene, magnetic field
driven metal-insulator-like transition in graphite, superfluid in 3He, and the
exotic pseudogap phase of high temperature superconductors. Although Dirac
fermions are proposed to play a key role in these systems, so far direct
experimental evidence of Dirac fermions has been limited. Here we report the
first direct observation of massless Dirac fermions with linear dispersion near
the Brillouin zone (BZ) corner H in graphite, coexisting with quasiparticles
with parabolic dispersion near another BZ corner K. In addition, we report a
large electron pocket which we attribute to defect-induced localized states.
Thus, graphite presents a novel system where massless Dirac fermions,
quasiparticles with finite effective mass, and defect states all contribute to

The plants, rituals and spells that 'cured' helminthiasis in Sicily
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The author reports on the plants, rituals and spells used against worms and the so-called <it>scantu </it>(fright) in some areas of Sicily. The work is based on ethnobotanical research carried out, prevalently, between 2002-2006, in some areas of Eastern, South-Eastern, North-Central and South-Central Sicily.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This research is based on dialogue. Senior 'healers' were contacted; furthermore, doctors, teachers, farmers and in general 'experts' with herbs and 'magic' rituals. Information was collected about the way the plants of folk medicine are prepared. The interviewees were also invited to recite prayers and spells against helminthiasis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The author has highlighted the importance of how, in some parts of Sicily, some ailments like helminthiasis and other correlated pathologies like <it>scantu </it>are 'treated' and, especially within the rural social classes, by folk medicine remedies, herbal practises, particular prayers, rituals and spells.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>As regards health/illness, it should be noted that in the last ten years conventional medicine has provided very satisfactory results even resolving potentially mortal pathologies. However, in certain social classes, there is no real collaboration between conventional and folk medicine; so for some senior citizens, the 'healer' with his rituals and empirical and magical herbs is still the person to turn to for the 'cure' of particular ailments. Interest in these practises from ancestral heritage in an advanced country like Italy, is only relevant if the aim is to recoup a cultural identity which is already in decline.</p> <p>It is significant to report a piece: on 14 October 2007 the news on a well-known national Italian TV channel reported an interview with a 94 year-old man from Arbatax (Sardinia) referred to as a 'healer' because both his townspeople and others from all over the world go to him for his cures. He is not paid except in kind and has been known to cure St. Anthony's fire, burns, scalding and marine fungal infections, by smearing his saliva over the infected part and reciting 'special words'.</p

Children's traditional ecological knowledge of wild food resources: a case study in a rural village in Northeast Thailand

Knowledge of non-domesticated food resources is part of traditional and tacit ecological knowledge, and is largely transmitted through socialization within cultural and household contexts. Optimal left ventricular lead position assessed with phase analysis on gated myocardial perfusion SPECT
The aim of the current study was to evaluate the relationship between the site of latest mechanical activation as assessed with gated myocardial perfusion SPECT (GMPS), left ventricular (LV) lead position and response to cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT). The patient population consisted of consecutive patients with advanced heart failure in whom CRT was currently indicated. Before implantation, 2-D echocardiography and GMPS were performed. The echocardiography was performed to assess LV end-systolic volume (LVESV), LV end-diastolic volume (LVEDV) and LV ejection fraction (LVEF). The site of latest mechanical activation was assessed by phase analysis of GMPS studies and related to LV lead position on fluoroscopy. Echocardiography was repeated after 6 months of CRT. CRT response was defined as a decrease of a parts per thousand yen15% in LVESV. Enrolled in the study were 90 patients (72% men, 67 +/- 10 years) with advanced heart failure. In 52 patients (58%), the LV lead was positioned at the site of latest mechanical activation (concordant), and in 38 patients (42%) the LV lead was positioned outside the site of latest mechanical activation (discordant). CRT response was significantly more often documented in patients with a concordant LV lead position than in patients with a discordant LV lead position (79% vs. 26%, p < 0.01). After 6 months, patients with a concordant LV lead position showed significant improvement in LVEF, LVESV and LVEDV (p < 0.05), whereas patients with a discordant LV lead position showed no significant improvement in these variables.
