    Fiber Type Profile and its Relation to Wilks Coefficient in Both Male and Female Powerlifters

    While powerlifters tend to display higher fast-twitch fiber content, it is unknown if this content predicts competitive performance via Wilks coefficient. Purpose: to 1) compare the myosin heavy chain (MHC) fiber type (FT) profiles between powerlifters and sedentary controls of both sexes, and 2) determine if fast-twitch fiber content predicts Wilks coefficient. Methods: Twelve actively competing powerlifters (PL; n=6M/6F; age=21±1.0y; 3.0±1.8y competing; 7.3±6.6 meets attended) and ten sedentary controls (CON; n=5M/5F; age=19.4±2.0y) underwent vastus lateralis muscle biopsies, with samples analyzed for MHC isoform content via mixed homogenate SDS-PAGE. Individual MHC isoform differences between group and sex were analyzed using a 3x2x2 (FT [MHC I, IIa, & IIx] x group [PL & CON] x sex [male & female]) ANOVA and MHC IIa content was compared to Wilks coefficient using Pearson correlation coefficient at pResults: Male PL MHC isoform distribution was 50±6% I, 45±6% IIa, and 5±11% IIx, vs 46±6% I, 53±6 IIa, and 0% IIx in PL females. Conversely, male CON MHC distribution was 33±5% I, 38±7% IIa, and 30±8% IIx, vs 35±9% I, 44±8% IIa, and 21±17% IIx in CON females. Analysis revealed a significant FT main effect (pConclusions:These results illustrate powerlifters have higher MHC I and IIa proportions, as well as lower MHC IIx content compared to sedentary controls. While overall limited by sample size, MHC IIa content does not appear to be a significant predictor of powerlifting Wilks coefficient, suggesting this characteristic alone does not define powerlifter skill variations

    Prevalence of adulteration in dietary supplements and recommendations for safe supplement practices in sport

    The prevalence of dietary supplement use among athletes continues to rise with 60–80% of athletes often reporting current or previous use of dietary supplements. While select dietary ingredients have been shown to improve acute performance and enhance training adaptations over time, it is important to still consider the risk vs. reward for athletes before opting to consume a dietary supplement. Previous work has indicated that certain dietary supplements may pose risks for inadvertent doping, may be susceptible to mislabelling, could be banned by certain governing bodies of sport, or pose health risks for certain populations. The purpose of the current narrative review is to summarize the prevalence of adulteration in dietary sport supplement products, outline the risks of inadvertent doping for athletes, and highlight best practices regarding safe supplementation strategies. Analytical studies have found anywhere from 14 to 50% of samples analyzed from dietary supplement products have tested positive for anabolic agents or other prohibited substances. It is important for the consumer to adhere to safe supplementation strategies, which include following serving size recommendations, cross-referencing ingredient profiles with the list of prohibited substances, choosing quality products that have been verified by a third-party certification program, and being cognizant of consuming multiple dietary supplement products with overlapping ingredient profiles. Once these practices have been considered, it is reasonable for an athlete to utilize dietary supplements as a strategy to optimize performance and health, with a low risk of failing a drug test (adverse analytical finding) and experiencing adverse events

    Effect of eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acid on resting and exercise-induced inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers: a randomized, placebo controlled, cross-over study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The purpose of the present investigation was to determine the effects of EPA/DHA supplementation on resting and exercise-induced inflammation and oxidative stress in exercise-trained men. Fourteen men supplemented with 2224 mg EPA+2208 mg DHA and a placebo for 6 weeks in a random order, double blind cross-over design (with an 8 week washout) prior to performing a 60 minute treadmill climb using a weighted pack. Blood was collected pre and post exercise and analyzed for a variety of oxidative stress and inflammatory biomarkers. Blood lactate, muscle soreness, and creatine kinase activity were also measured.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Treatment with EPA/DHA resulted in a significant increase in blood levels of both EPA (18 ± 2 μmol·L<sup>-1 </sup>vs. 143 ± 23 μmol·L<sup>-1</sup>; p < 0.0001) and DHA (67 ± 4 μmol·L<sup>-1 </sup>vs. 157 ± 13 μmol·L<sup>-1</sup>; p < 0.0001), while no differences were noted for placebo. Resting levels of CRP and TNF-α were lower with EPA/DHA compared to placebo (p < 0.05). Resting oxidative stress markers were not different (p > 0.05). There was a mild increase in oxidative stress in response to exercise (XO and H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub>) (p < 0.05). No interaction effects were noted. However, a condition effect was noted for CRP and TNF-α, with lower values with the EPA/DHA condition.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>EPA/DHA supplementation increases blood levels of these fatty acids and results in decreased resting levels of inflammatory biomarkers in exercise-trained men, but does not appear necessary for exercise-induced attenuation in either inflammation or oxidative stress. This may be due to the finding that trained men exhibit a minimal increase in both inflammation and oxidative stress in response to moderate duration (60 minute) aerobic exercise.</p

    In-Season Hip Thrust vs. Back Squat Training in Female High School Soccer Players

The barbell back squat provides a highly effective training stimulus to improve lower body strength, speed, and power, which are considered key components of athletic performance in many sports. The barbell hip thrust exercise utilizes similar musculature, and is popular among practitioners, but has received far less scientific examination. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of an in-season resistance training program with hip thrusts or back squats on physical performance in adolescent female soccer players. Fourteen players completed identical whole-body resistance training twice per week for 6 weeks, except one group used the barbell hip thrust (HT) (n = 6) and the other the back squat (SQ) (n = 8). Improvements were observed for both groups in hip thrust 3RM (HT = 34.0%, SQ = 23.8%), back squat 3RM (HT = 34.6%, SQ = 31.0%), vertical jump (HT = 5.4%, SQ = 4.9%), broad jump (HT = 10.5%, SQ = 8.1%), ball kicking distance (HT = 13.2%, SQ = 8.1%), and pro-agility (HT = -1.5%, SQ = -1.5%; faster), but not 36.6-m dash (HT = 2.9%, SQ = 1.9%; slower) with no significant between-group differences. These data indicate that both the hip thrust and the squat provide an effective stimulus to improve these sport-specific performance measures. Practitioners should consider these findings in combination with other factors (equipment availability, ability to coach the movement, training goals, injuries, etc.) when selecting exercises

    Effects of Starting Stance on Base Running Sprint Speed in Softball Players

    International Journal of Exercise Science 11(6): 179-186, 2018. Speed is a crucial aspect in softball, and can be the difference between winning and losing. Base stealing is a method used to produce runs. There has been debate over which starting position is the most advantageous to maximize acceleration and speed to reach the next base the fastest. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of different starting stances on acceleration and speed phases in collegiate softball players. Seventeen healthy NCAA Division I women’s softball players (age = 19.9 ± 1.3yrs, height = 167.0 ± 5.4cm, mass = 74.8 ± 14.1kg) volunteered to participate. Three maximum 45 ft sprints, with one minute rest, were performed (with splits at 15, 30 and 45ft) for each of three starting stances (front foot on the base, back foot on the base, and cross over stance). A 1x3 repeated measures ANOVA for total time demonstrated that front foot on the base was significantly faster (2.51 ± 0.18s) than back foot on the base (2.70 ± 0.19s) and the cross over step (2.66 ± 0.23s). For all three splits, front foot on the base was also significantly faster (0.96 ± 0.07s, 0.81 ± 0.06s, and 0.73 ± 0.06s) than back foot on the base (1.10 ± 0.13s, 0.84 ± 0.05s, and 0.75 ± 0.43s) and cross over step (1.04 ± 0.09s, 0.84 ± 0.06s, and 0.75 ± 0.07s). The decrease in time for front foot on the base was probably the result of using the base to push against, like a sprinter’s block, to produce greater horizontal force to accelerate faster and reach a greater top speed. Coaches should teach their softball athletes to stand with their front foot on the base when base running

    Repeated Plyometric Exercise Attenuates Blood Glucose in Healthy Adults

    International Journal of Exercise Science 10(7): 1076-1084, 2017. Plyometric exercise is popular in commercial exercise programs aiming to maximize energy expenditure for weight loss. However, the effect of plyometric exercise on blood glucose is unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of relatively high intensity plyometric exercise on blood glucose. Thirteen subjects (6 females age= 21.8 ± 1.0 yrs.; height= 163.7 ± 7.8 cm; mass= 60.8 ± 6.7 kg and 7 males age= 22.0 ± 2.6 yrs.; height= 182.3 ± 3.6 cm; mass= 87.4 ± 12.5 kg) volunteered to participate. Subjects completed two random conditions on two separate days, consisting of either five sets of 10 maximal effort countermovement squat jumps (SJ) with 50 seconds’ rest between sets or quiet sitting (SIT) for the time equated to the SJ duration (~4min). Immediately after each condition, subjects drank 75g of anhydrous glucose (CHO) in 100ml of water. Blood glucose measurements were taken via finger prick pre and immediately post SJ or SIT, and 5, 15, 30, and 60 min post. A 2x6 (condition x time) ANOVA revealed a significant interaction where SJ blood glucose was lower at 15 (114.0 ± 14.6 mg/dl) and 30 (142.1 ± 22.5 mg/dl) min compared to SIT (15min 130.8 ± 14.0 mg/dl and 30min 159.3 ± 21.0 mg/dl). The current plyometric protocol attenuated CHO-induced blood glucose at 15 and 30 min. This may be due to increased physiological stress applied to the muscles, thus increasing muscular glucose uptake

    A novel method of assessing human skeletal muscle fiber type specific protein content

    Access to thesis permanently restricted to Ball State community onlyLittle is known about protein profiles in slow-twitch (MHC I) and fast-twitch (MHC IIa and MHC IIx) human skeletal muscle fibers. Therefore we developed a method of assessing fiber type specific protein content across the continuum of human skeletal muscle fiber types. The method presented here combines the advantages of SDS-PAGE for fiber typing with the common Western Blot (WB) technique. Individual vastus lateralis muscle fibers (n = 264) were isolated and clipped into two portions, one for fiber-typing and one for protein identification. Following fiber type determination, WB destined fiber segments were combined into fiber type specific pools (20 fibers/pool) and assessed for GAPDH, actin, Citrate Synthase, and total p38 content. GAPDH expression was 69%, 92%, 159%, and 200% more abundant in MHC I/IIa, MHC IIa, MHC IIa/IIx, and MHC IIx pools when compared to MHC I, respectively. Inversely, Citrate synthase content was 526%, 497%, 316%, and 47% more abundant in MHC I, MHC I/IIa, MHC IIa, and MHC IIa/IIx when compared to MHC IIx, respectively. Similar to GAPDH, total p38 expression was 67% greater in MHC IIa versus MHC I fibers. These data establish a novel application of WB combined with SDS-PAGE for fiber type specific protein analysis in human skeletal muscle. These initial results show content of particular proteins exist in a hierarchal fashion throughout the continuum of human skeletal muscle fiber types. Application of these methods will enhance our understanding of skeletal muscle health profiles among physically active and clinically based populations.Thesis (Ph.     Effects of a Vibrating Foam Roller on Ipsilateral and Contralateral Neuromuscular Function and the Hamstring-to-Quadriceps Ratios

The effects of vibrating foam rolling the hamstrings on range of motion (ROM), hamstrings-to-quadriceps (H:Q) ratios, muscle activation, and peak torque (PT) of the quadriceps and hamstrings have yet to be extensively studied. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a vibrating foam roller on the hamstrings. Fifteen resistance trained women (mean age ± SD = 22.9 ± 2.0 years, height = 162.7 ± 4.8 cm, body mass = 66.0 ± 9.7 kgs, BMI = 24.9 ± 3.3 kg·m2) participated in five separate testing sessions to examine pre- and post-testing PT, H:Q ratios, muscle activation of the quadriceps and hamstrings, and ROM of the hamstrings. Testing sessions consisted of a foam rolling, a vibrating foam rolling, a vibration-only, and a control condition. Hamstrings ROM increased for both limbs with the exception of the vibration condition for the untreated limb (p = 0.003). The untreated limb had a quadriceps PT increase from pre- to post-testing (p = 0.014). Concentric hamstrings PT for both limbs decreased pre- to post-testing for all conditions (p = 0.013). Eccentric hamstrings PT for both limbs decreased pre- to post-testing (p = 0.026). Conventional H:Q ratios decreased pre- to post-testing for both the treated and untreated limbs (p \u3c 0.001). Functional H:Q ratios decreased for both limbs pre- to post-testing (p \u3c 0.001). Although hamstrings ROM increased in both limbs, foam rolling, vibrating foam rolling, and vibration-only could possibly decrease performance measures of the ipsilateral and contralateral limbs

    Comparison of Body Fat Results from 4 Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis Devices vs. Air Displacement Plethysmography in American Adolescent Wrestlers

    Background: Accurate and accessible methods of body composition are necessary to ensure health and safety of wrestlers during competition. The most valid and reliable instruments are expensive and relatively inaccessible to high school wrestlers; therefore, more practical technology is needed. Objective: To compare body fat percentage (BF%) results from 4 bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) devices to those from air displacement plethysmography (ADP) in adolescent wrestlers. Methodology: 134 adolescent male and female wrestlers (1.72±0.9 m, 66.8±14.3 kg, 15.6±1.1 yrs.) were tested for hydration and then completed 4 body composition tests with different BIA devices and one with Bod Pod. Relative and absolute agreement were assessed between each BIA device and ADP on a single day. Results: When compared with ADP, all devices demonstrated excellent reliability (ICC (2,1)) range: 0.88-0.94), but questionable measurement error (SEM range: 2.3-3.6 %BF). Bland-Altman plots revealed that each bioelectrical impedance device we tested over-estimated body fat percent in high school wrestlers (range: 0.8-3.6 %BF) and demonstrated wide 95% limits of agreement (range: 15.0-20.8 %BF) compared to ADP. Conclusions: The devices investigated demonstrated reasonable measurement accuracy. However, wide margins of error of each device were noted. Caution should be taken when assessing adolescent wrestlers with lower amounts of body fat, as it may result in failing to identify those who do not meet the minimum body fat percentage for competition. The governing bodies should use the research data in the decision-making process regarding appropriate devices for use in their weight management programs
