    Natural cases of polyarthritis associated with feline calicivirus infection in cats

    The limping syndrome is occasionally reported during acute feline calicivirus (FCV) infections or as consequence of vaccination. In this retrospective study, three clinical cases of lameness in household cats naturally infected by FCV were described and phylogeny of the virus were investigated by analysing the hypervariable E region of the ORF2 viral gene. Cats were diagnosed with polyarthritis and FCV RNA or antigens were detected in symptomatic joints. One cat, euthanized for ethical reasons, underwent a complete post-mortem examination and was subjected to histopathological and immunohistochemical investigations. No phylogenetic subgrouping were evident for the sequenced FCV. Histopathology of the euthanized cat revealed diffuse fibrinous synovitis and osteoarthritis eight months after the onset of lameness and the first detection of FCV RNA, supporting the hypothesis of a persistent infection. FCV was demonstrated by immunohistochemistry in synoviocytes and fibroblasts of the synovial membranes. This study provides new data on the occurrence of polyarthritis in FCV-infected cats, demonstrates by immunohistochemistry the presence of FCV in the synovial membranes of a cat with persistent polyarthritis and supports the absence of correlation between limping syndrome and phylogenetic subgrouping of viruses

    Influences of Psychological Traits and PROP Taster Status on Familiarity with and Choice of Phenol-Rich Foods and Beverages

    Plant phenolics are powerful antioxidants and free radical scavengers that can contribute to the healthy functional properties of plant-based food and beverages. Thus, dietary behaviours rich in plant-based food and beverages are encouraged. However, it is well-known that the bitter taste and other low-appealing sensory properties that characterize vegetables and some other plant-based foods act as an innate barrier for their acceptance. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of psychological traits and PROP status (the responsiveness to bitter taste of 6-n- propylthiouracil) on the choice of and familiarity with phenol-rich vegetables and beverages varying in recalled level of bitterness and astringency. Study 1 aimed at assessing the variations of the sensory properties of vegetable and coffee/tea items with two check-all-that-apply (CATA) questionnaires (n = 201 and n = 188 individuals, respectively). Study 2 aimed at investigating how sensitivity to punishment, to reward, and to disgust, food neophobia, private body consciousness, alexithymia, and PROP responsiveness affect choice and familiarity with phenol-rich foods (n = 1200 individuals). A Choice Index was calculated for vegetables (CV) and coffee/tea (CC) as a mean of the choices of the more bitter/astringent option of the pairs and four Familiarity Indices were computed for vegetables (FV) and coffee/tea (FC), higher (+) or lower (-) in bitterness and astringency. Subjects higher in food neophobia, sensitivity to punishment or sensitivity to disgust reported significantly lower choice indices than individuals lower in these traits, meaning that they systematically opted for the least bitter/astringent option within the pairs. Familiarity with vegetables was lower in individuals high in sensitivity to punishment, in food neophobia and in alexithymia, irrespective of their sensory properties. The Familiarity Index with coffee/tea characterized by higher bitterness and astringency was lower in individuals high in food neophobia, sensitivity to disgust, and alexithymia. No significant effect of PROP was found on any indices. The proposed approach based on product grouping according to differences in bitterness and astringency allowed the investigation of the role of individual differences in chemosensory perception and of psychological traits as modulators of phenol-rich foods preference and consumption

    Hybrid photonic-bandgap accelerating cavities

    In a recent investigation, we studied two-dimensional point-defected photonic bandgap cavities composed of dielectric rods arranged according to various representative periodic and aperiodic lattices, with special emphasis on possible applications to particle acceleration (along the longitudinal axis). In this paper, we present a new study aimed at highlighting the possible advantages of using hybrid structures based on the above dielectric configurations, but featuring metallic rods in the outermost regions, for the design of extremely-high quality factor, bandgap-based, accelerating resonators. In this framework, we consider diverse configurations, with different (periodic and aperiodic) lattice geometries, sizes, and dielectric/metal fractions. Moreover, we also explore possible improvements attainable via the use of superconducting plates to confine the electromagnetic field in the longitudinal direction. Results from our comparative studies, based on numerical full-wave simulations backed by experimental validations (at room and cryogenic temperatures) in the microwave region, identify the candidate parametric configurations capable of yielding the highest quality factor.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables.     Differences in the rate of lymph node invasion in men with clinically localized prostate cancer might be related to the continent of origin

    OBJECTIVETo test whether the rate of lymph node invasion (LNI) differs between patients treated with radical prostatectomy (RP) at a European or a North American centre.PATIENTS AND METHODSIn all, 1385 men had RP with bilateral lymphadenectomy for clinically localized prostate cancer (587 from Dallas, Texas and 798 from Milan, Italy). Univariate and multivariate analyses focused on the association between the continent of origin and the rate of LNI, after controlling for prostate‐specific antigen (PSA) level, clinical stage, biopsy Gleason sum and the number of examined and removed lymph nodes.RESULTSEuropean men had higher PSA levels (9.1 vs 7.8 ng/mL), a higher proportion of palpable cancers (44.5 vs 32.8%), more nodes removed (mean 14.9 vs 7.8) and a higher rate of LNI (9.0% vs 1.2%; all differences P < 0.001). In multivariate analyses that controlled for PSA level and clinical variables, European men had an 8.9‐fold higher risk of LNI (P < 0.001) than their counterparts from the USA. Among preoperative variables, the continent of origin was the third most informative predictor of LNI (67.5%), after biopsy Gleason sum (74.3%) and the number of examined lymph nodes (71.0%), and improved the ability to predict LNI by 4.7%.CONCLUSIONMen treated at a European centre had a 7.3–8.9‐fold higher rate of LNI, despite adjusting for all clinical and pathological variables. It remains to be shown what predisposes European men to a higher rate of LNI

    Stepwise strategy based on 1H-NMR fingerprinting in combination with chemometrics to determine the content of vegetable oils in olive oil mixtures

    1H NMR fingerprinting of edible oils and a set of multivariate classification and regression models organised in a decision tree is proposed as a stepwise strategy to assure the authenticity and traceability of olive oils and their declared blends with other vegetable oils (VOs). Oils of the ‘virgin olive oil’ and ‘olive oil’ categories and their mixtures with the most common VOs, i.e. sunflower, high oleic sunflower, hazelnut, avocado, soybean, corn, refined palm olein and desterolized high oleic sunflower oils, were studied. Partial least squares (PLS) discriminant analysis provided stable and robust binary classification models to identify the olive oil type and the VO in the blend. PLS regression afforded models with excellent precisions and acceptable accuracies to determine the percentage of VO in the mixture. The satisfactory performance of this approach, tested with blind samples, confirm its potential to support regulations and control bodies

    Connectivity and energy-aware preorders for mobile ad-hoc networks

    Network connectivity and energy conservation are two major goals in mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs). In this paper we propose a probabilistic, energy-aware, broadcast calculus for the analysis of both such aspects of MANETs. We first present a probabilistic behavioural congruence together with a co-inductive proof technique based on the notion of bisimulation. Then we define an energy-aware preorder over networks. The behavioural congruence allows us to verify whether two networks exhibit the same (probabilistic) connectivity behaviour, while the preorder makes it possible to evaluate the energy consumption of different, but behaviourally equivalent, networks. In practice, the quantitative evaluation of the models is carried out by resorting to the statistical model checking implemented in the PRISM tool, i.e., a simulation of the probabilistic model. We consider two case studies: first we evaluate the performance of the Location Aided Routing protocol, then we compare the energy efficiency of the Go-Back-N protocol with that of the Stop-And-Wait in a network with mobility
