    Evolution of the consumption of lorazepam in a rural environment in the Region of Murcia (2012-2018)

    Objective: To evaluate the consumption of lorazepam in the Region of Murcia, specifically in the district of Mula, during the period 2012-2018, considering age and sex variables. Method: Cross-sectional descriptive study, where the use of benzodiazepines in a specific population during the period 2012 - 2018 is investigated. The variables collected were sex, age and the prescribed Defined Daily Dose. The data correspond to the dispensations of Lorazepam in the pharmacy offices of the disctrict of Mula, provided by the Health Assistance General Directorate. Daily dose per inhabitant and per 1000 inhabitants were calculated and the groups median and interquartile ranges were established p25 and p75 for later comparisons. Results: Overall consumption over the period increased by 0.42%. In men it increased by 21.4%, while in women it decreased by 7.5%. However, in women, consumption was at higher doses, betwand significant differences were found in lorazepam consumption een groups when analyzed by sex. The analysis by age showed a significant increase in consumption as the age of the patients increased. Conclusion: The consumption of benzodiazepines is high with increasing age, more so in women, and this may have an impact on the adverse effects associated with this group of drugs and present an important public health problem

    Plant water status indicators for detecting water stress in pomegranate trees

    Measurements obtained by the continuous monitoring of trunk diameter fluctuations were compared with discrete measurements of midday stem water potential (stem) and midday leaf conductance (gl) in adult pomegranate trees (Punica granatum (L.) cv. Mollar de Elche). Control plants (T0) were irrigated daily above their crop water requirements in order to attain non‐limiting soil water conditions, while T1 plants were subjected to water stress by depriving them of irrigation water for 34 days, after which time irrigation was restored and plant recovery was studied for 7 days. T1 plants showed a substantial degree of water stress, which developed slowly. Maximum daily trunk shrinkage (MDS) was identified to be the most suitable plant‐based indicator for irrigation scheduling in adult pomegranate trees, because its signal:noise ((T1/T0):coefficient of variation) ratio was higher than that for stem ((T1/T0):coefficient of variation) and gl ((T0/T1):coefficient of variation). MDS increased in response to water stress, but when the stem fell below −1.67 MPa, the MDS values decreased.This research was supported by CICYT/FEDER (AGL2010‐19201‐C04‐01AGR) and AECID (A1/035430/11) grants to the authors.     Para cultivar una especie silvestre es necesario modificar el esquema genético resultante de los procesos de selección natural a uno adaptado a las condiciones manejadas por el hombre, e implica detectar áreas geográficas similares a aquellas donde se originó la especie. En este estudio se analiza un modelo de áreas geográficas potenciales para la adaptación de Capsicum pubescens Ruiz & Pav. con el objetivo de detectar las condiciones de nicho ecológico apropiado, determinar zonas potenciales en México y describir las relaciones entre el medio ambiente y las características morfológicas del fruto. Se utilizó el algoritmo reciente de máxima entropía (MaxEnt) para modelar el nicho de C. pubescens dentro de una región de importancia en el centro de Veracruz, México. Se utilizó un total de 44 sitios de presencia y cuatro variables bioclimáticas para detectar nichos adecuados para la especie; así mismo, se realizó un análisis de regresión por mínimos cuadrados parciales (PLS) combinando los sitios de presencia, variables bioclimáticas y características morfológicas del fruto. Se construyó un mapa final de idoneidad identificando las áreas adecuadas para el crecimiento de C. pubescens. Las contribuciones de las variables predictoras al modelo fueron preipitación anual (Bio12) 43.9 %, capa de potasio (K) 23 %, altitud (DEM) 22.3 % y temperatura media anual (Bio1) 10.7 %, con valor del área bajo la curva de 99.7 %. Los mínimos cuadrados parciales corroboraron la importancia de las covariables, que intervienen en la expresión de características morfológicas del fruto, ayudando a entender mejor las relaciones entre especies y el medio ambiente. Áreas aún no exploradas arrojaron probabilidades de ocurrencia mayores a 90 %, principalmente en las zonas montañosas de Chihuahua, Tamaulipas, Nuevo León y la Sierra de Santa Martha al sur del estado de Veracruz. Se identificó un grupo de accesiones sobresalientes que podrían servir como base para iniciar un programa de mejoramiento genético en esta especie

    Varietal description of two genotypes of manzano chili pepper (Capsicum pubescens Ruiz & Pav.)

    Objective: the objective of this research work was to obtain the varietal description of two varieties of chile manzano in Las Montañas in the center of Veracruz, México. Design/methodology/approach: the varietal characterization module was established under greenhouse conditions at the Centro de Bachillerato Tecnológico Agropecuario No. 99 in the municipality of Coscomatepec de Bravo. The recorded descriptors were in accordance with the International of Plant Genetic Resources Institute for Capsicum and the Graphic Handbook for Variety Description of manzano hot pepper. The plants were characterized from the seedling to the adult plant. The agronomic management of the crop was carried out in accordance with the manual for the production of manzano hot pepper in Las Montañas of the state of Veracruz. Results: all qualitative descriptors were constant for the two varieties MEXUVNE1-15-C2 and MEXUVCU1-16-C2 from seedling to fruiting; in contrast, there were dissimilarities in plant height, stem, leaf, flower, fruit and seed dimensions. Limitations of the study/implications: the pandemic caused by COVID-19 was the main limitation so that some descriptors were not recorded in a timely manner as indicated in the Graphic Handbook.     Los receptores ß-adrenérgicos (ßAR) y de serotonina (5-HT4) median sus efectos en tejidos cardiacos a través de la ruta receptor-Gs-AC-AMPc. Las fosfodiesterasas (PDE) son una amplia familia de enzimas cuya función es la degradación del AMPc. Se desconocía que isoenzimas de PDEs son responsables de la hidrólisis de AMPc en las diferentes regiones cardiacas. El objetivo de esta tesis doctoral es investigar que isoenzimas de PDEs tienen actividad en el miocardio humano, porcino y de roedores. Se han realizado estudios cronotrópicos, inotrópicos, lusitrópicos, bioquímicos y electrofisiológicos. Los principales resultados son: Las PDEs se comportan de manera distinta en las diferentes regiones cardiacas y compartimentos celulares; y La frecuencia basal de nódulo sinusal está controlada por PDEs pero en ninguna especie estudiada las PDEs controlan la taquicardia causada por los ßARs y los receptores 5-HT4. La extrapolación de la función de las PDEs al humano debe h acerse con cautela. Abstract Myocardial ß-adrenoceptors (ßAR) and serotonin receptors (5-HT4) mediate their signals through the receptor-Gs-AC-cAMP pathway. Phosphodiesterases (PDEs) are a large enzyme family that degrade cAMP. It was unknown which PDE isoenzymes are responsible for the hydrolysis of the cAMP in different cardiac regions. The aim of this doctoral thesis is to investigate which isoenzymes have a role in human, porcine and rodent myocardium. We performed chronotropic, inotropic, lusitropic, biochemical and electrophysiological studies. The key results are: PDEs have different roles in different cardiac regions and cellular compartments; and the basal beating rate of the sinoatrial node is controlled by PDE3 and/or PDE4, but these PDEs do not limit the tachycardia mediated through the stimulation of ß1AR, ß2AR and 5-HT4. Given the diverse roles of PDE3 and PDE4 and their dependence on species, extrapolation to humans should be done cautiously because these animal models usually do not reflect the human myocardium

    The beta-blockers carvedilol and metoprolol provide important therapeutic strategies for heart failure treatment. Therapy with metoprolol facilitates the control by phosphodiesterase PDE3, but not PDE4, of inotropic effects of catecholamines in human failing ventricle. However, it is not known whether carvedilol has the same effect. We investigated whether the PDE3-selective inhibitor cilostamide (0.3 mu M) or PDE4-selective inhibitor rolipram (1 mu M) modified the positive inotropic and lusitropic effects of catecholamines in ventricular myocardium of heart failure patients treated with carvedilol. Right ventricular trabeculae from explanted hearts of nine carvedilol-treated patients with terminal heart failure were paced to contract at 1 Hz. The effects of (-)-noradrenaline, mediated through beta(1)-adrenoceptors (beta(2)-adrenoceptors blocked with ICI118551), and (-)-adrenaline, mediated through beta(2)-adrenoceptors (beta(1)-adrenoceptors blocked with CGP20712A), were assessed in the absence and presence of the PDE inhibitors. The inotropic potency, estimated from -logEC(50)s, was unchanged for (-)-noradrenaline but decreased 16-fold for (-)-adrenaline in carvedilol-treated compared to non-beta-blocker-treated patients, consistent with the previously reported beta(2)-adrenoceptor-selectivity of carvedilol. Cilostamide caused 2- to 3-fold and 10- to 35-fold potentiations of the inotropic and lusitropic effects of (-)-noradrenaline and (-)-adrenaline, respectively, in trabeculae from carvedilol-treated patients. Rolipram did not affect the inotropic and lusitropic potencies of (-)-noradrenaline or (-)-adrenaline. Treatment of heart failure patients with carvedilol induces PDE3 to selectively control the positive inotropic and lusitropic effects mediated through ventricular beta(2)-adrenoceptors compared to beta(1)-adrenoceptors. The beta(2)-adrenoceptor-selectivity of carvedilol may provide protection against beta(2)-adrenoceptor-mediated ventricular overstimulation in PDE3 inhibitor-treated patients. PDE4 does not control beta(1)- and beta(2)-adrenoceptor-mediated inotropic and lusitropic effects in carvedilol-treated patients
