MicroRNA expression profiles in liver and colon of sexually immature gilts after exposure to Fusarium mycotoxins

To improve our knowledge of the role of microRNAs (miRs) in responses of the porcine digestive system to two Fusarium mycotoxins, zearalenone (ZEN) and deoxynivalenol (DON), we examined the expression of 7 miRs (miR-9, miR-15a, miR-21, miR-34a, miR-122, miR-125b, and miR-192), previously found to be deregulated in diseased liver and colon cells. In this study, immature gilts were exposed to NOEL doses of ZEN (40 μg/kg/d), DON (12 μg/kg/d), ZEN+DON (40+12 μg/kg/d), and placebo (negative control group) for 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, and 42 days. Before the treatment, expression levels of the selected miRs were measured in the liver, the duodenum, the jejunum, and the ascending and the descending colon of the gilts. Hierarchical clustering of the tissues by their miR expression profiles was consistent with what would be expected based on the anatomical locations and the physiological functions of the organs, suggesting that functions of the miRs are related to the specificities of the tissues in which they are expressed. A subset of 2 pairs of miRs (miR-21+miR-192 and miR-15a+miR-34a), which were assigned to two distinct clusters based on their tissue abundance, was then evaluated in the liver and the ascending and the descending colon during the treatment. The most meaningful results were obtained from the ascending colon, where a significant effect of the treatment was observed, suggesting that during the exposure to mycotoxins, the pathways involved in cell proliferation and survival were disordered. Changes in miR expression in the liver and the descending colon of the treated gilts were smaller, and were associated more with treatment duration than the exposure to ZEN, DON, or ZEN+DON. Further research should focus on identification of genes whose expression is regulated by these aberrantly expressed miRs. This should facilitate understanding of the miRNA-regulated biological effects of mycotoxins

Zearalenone and Reproductive Function in Farm Animals

Farm animals are exposed to zearalenone through the feed because of the widespread occurrence of this mycotoxin in cereals and clinical reproductive disorders due to mycotoxin effects are often reported in farm animal species. This review describes the metabolism, the mechanistic aspects, the clinical reproductive symptoms and the in vitro effects on functional parameters of oocytes and sperm cells induced by zearalenone and its derivatives in farm animals. The studies on in vitro effects allow to understand the action mechanisms of mycotoxins and, sometime, to explain the in vivo symptoms. The impairment of semen quality and female reproductive function induced by zearalenone could be a factor responsible for the reproductive failure in farm animals

Streszczanie tekstu w języku polskim

The aim of this article is to describe an existing implementation of a text summarizer for Polish, to analyze the results and propose the possibilities of further development. The problem of text summarizing has been already addressed by science but until now there has been no implementation designed for Polish. The implemented algorithm is based on existing developments in the field but it also includes some improvements. It has been optimized for newspaper texts ranging from approx. 10 to 50 sentences. Evaluation has shown that it works better than known generic summarization tools when applied to Polish.Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie algorytmu streszczającego teksty w języku polskim. Mimo istnienia algorytmów streszczających teksty, brak jest algorytmów dedykowanych dla języka polskiego. Przedstawiony algorytm bazuje na istniejących algorytmach streszczania tekstu, ale zawiera kilka ulepszeń. Algorytm jest przeznaczony dla streszczania tekstów prasowych liczących od 10 do 50 zdań. Przeprowadzone testy pokazują, że algorytm działa lepiej od znanych algorytmów zastosowanych dla języka polskiego

The Rebel's Code. Demythologization Strategies in New Wave Films of Nagisa Oshima

This study of early work of Nagisa Ōshima is an attempt to analyze nature of creative method and strategies of filmic style developed by this Japanese director. Ōshima throughout his career, presented a provocateur and a rebel attitude. His involvement in the affairs of political, social and cultural, made him one of the major figures in Japanese cinema after World War II. His innovative films provide running commentary on the postwar Japan. In the analysis of three selected films: Cruel Story of The Youth (Seishun Zankoku Monogatari, 1960), Death by Hanging (Koshikei, 1968) and The Ceremony (Gishiki, 1971) author proves that the basis of creative method of Ōshima is rebellion against tradition seen both in terms of socio-cultural, and filmic. This rebellion is reflected in the selection of controversial topics and innovative way of presenting them. Through his films, Ōshima is trying to sensitize viewer to issues that they raise. However what is more important Ōshima uses his films as a way to find the answers to question about the state of the spirit of postwar Japanese society.Powyższa praca poświęcona wczesnej twórczości Nagisy Ōshimy, jest próbą analizy charakteru metody twórczej oraz stylu filmowego jaki wypracował ten japoński reżyser. Ōshima w ciągu całej swojej kariery prezentował postawę prowokatora i buntownika silnie zaangażowanego w sprawy natury politycznej, społecznej i kulturowej, stając się tym samym jedną z czołowych postaci japońskiej kinematografii po II wojnie światowej. Jego nowatorskie filmy stanowią krytyczny komentarz rzeczywistości powojennej Japonii.Autor poddając analizie trzy pozycje: Opowieść o okrutnej młodości (Seishun zankoku monogatari, 1960), Śmierć przez powieszenie (Koshikei, 1968) oraz Ceremonię (Gishiki, 1971) wykazuje, że podstawą metody twórczej Ōshimy jest bunt wobec tradycji pojmowanej zarówno w kategoriach społeczno-kulturowych, jak i filmowych. Bunt ten uwidacznia się w doborze kontrowersyjnych tematów oraz nowatorskim sposobie ich prezentacji. Ōshima poprzez swoje filmy stara się uwrażliwić widza na poruszane w nich problemy, co jednak istotniejsze próbuje odnaleźć odpowiedź na nurtujące go pytanie o stan ducha społeczeństwa powojennej Japonii

Effect of Synchronized Linked Band Selection on Speech Intelligibility of Bilateral Cochlear Implant Users

Normal hearing listeners have the ability to exploit the audio input perceived by each ear to extract target information in challenging listening scenarios. Bilateral cochlear implant (BiCI) users, however, do not benefit as much as normal hearing listeners do from a bilateral input. In this study, we investigate the effect that bilaterally linked band selection, bilaterally synchronized electrical stimulation and ideal binary masks (IdBMs) have on the ability of 10 BiCIs to understand speech in background noise. The performance was assessed through a sentence-based speech intelligibility test, in a scenario where the speech signal was presented from the front and the interfering noise from one side. The linked band selection relies on the most favorable signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) ear, which will select the bands to be stimulated for both CIs. Results show that no benefit from adding a second CI to the most favorable SNR side was achieved for any of the tested bilateral conditions. However, when using both devices, speech perception results show that performing linked band selection, besides delivering bilaterally synchronized electrical stimulation, leads to an improvement compared to standard clinical setups. Moreover, the outcomes of this work show that by applying IdBMs, subjects achieve speech intelligibility scores similar to the ones without background noise
