Angular quantization and the density matrix renormalization group

Path integral techniques for the density matrix of a one-dimensional statistical system near a boundary previously employed in black-hole physics are applied to providing a new interpretation of the density matrix renormalization group: its efficacy is due to the concentration of quantum states near the boundary.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Mod. Anisotropy in Homogeneous Rotating Turbulence

The effective stress tensor of a homogeneous turbulent rotating fluid is anisotropic. This leads us to consider the most general axisymmetric four-rank ``viscosity tensor'' for a Newtonian fluid and the new terms in the turbulent effective force on large scales that arise from it, in addition to the microscopic viscous force. Some of these terms involve couplings to vorticity and others are angular momentum non conserving (in the rotating frame). Furthermore, we explore the constraints on the response function and the two-point velocity correlation due to axisymmetry. Finally, we compare our viscosity tensor with other four-rank tensors defined in current approaches to non-rotating anisotropic turbulence.Comment: 14 pages, RevTe

Entropic C-theorems in free and interacting two-dimensional field theories

The relative entropy in two-dimensional field theory is studied on a cylinder geometry, interpreted as finite-temperature field theory. The width of the cylinder provides an infrared scale that allows us to define a dimensionless relative entropy analogous to Zamolodchikov's cc function. The one-dimensional quantum thermodynamic entropy gives rise to another monotonic dimensionless quantity. I illustrate these monotonicity theorems with examples ranging from free field theories to interacting models soluble with the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz. Both dimensionless entropies are explicitly shown to be monotonic in the examples that we analyze.Comment: 34 pages, 3 figures (8 EPS files), Latex2e file, continuation of hep-th/9710241; rigorous analysis of sufficient conditions for universality of the dimensionless relative entropy, more detailed discussion of the relation with Zamolodchikov's theorem, references added; to appear in Phys. A Comment on the Path Integral Approach to Cosmological Perturbation Theory

    Get PDF
It is pointed out that the exact renormalization group approach to cosmological perturbation theory, proposed in Matarrese and Pietroni, JCAP 0706 (2007) 026, arXiv:astro-ph/0703563 and arXiv:astro-ph/0702653, constitutes a misnomer. Rather, having instructively cast this classical problem into path integral form, the evolution equation then derived comes about as a special case of considering how the generating functional responds to variations of the primordial power spectrum.Comment: 2 pages, v2: refs added, published in JCA

Operator-Based Truncation Scheme Based on the Many-Body Fermion Density Matrix

In [S. A. Cheong and C. L. Henley, cond-mat/0206196 (2002)], we found that the many-particle eigenvalues and eigenstates of the many-body density matrix ρB\rho_B of a block of BB sites cut out from an infinite chain of noninteracting spinless fermions can all be constructed out of the one-particle eigenvalues and one-particle eigenstates respectively. In this paper we developed a statistical-mechanical analogy between the density matrix eigenstates and the many-body states of a system of noninteracting fermions. Each density matrix eigenstate corresponds to a particular set of occupation of single-particle pseudo-energy levels, and the density matrix eigenstate with the largest weight, having the structure of a Fermi sea ground state, unambiguously defines a pseudo-Fermi level. We then outlined the main ideas behind an operator-based truncation of the density matrix eigenstates, where single-particle pseudo-energy levels far away from the pseudo-Fermi level are removed as degrees of freedom. We report numerical evidence for scaling behaviours in the single-particle pseudo-energy spectrum for different block sizes BB and different filling fractions \nbar. With the aid of these scaling relations, which tells us that the block size BB plays the role of an inverse temperature in the statistical-mechanical description of the density matrix eigenstates and eigenvalues, we looked into the performance of our operator-based truncation scheme in minimizing the discarded density matrix weight and the error in calculating the dispersion relation for elementary excitations. This performance was compared against that of the traditional density matrix-based truncation scheme, as well as against a operator-based plane wave truncation scheme, and found to be very satisfactory.Comment: 22 pages in RevTeX4 format, 22 figures. Analysis of a three-component model phase diagram by Catastrophe Theory

We analyze the thermodynamical potential of a lattice gas model with three components and five parameters using the methods of Catastrophe Theory. We find the highest singularity, which has codimension five, and establish its transversality. Hence the corresponding seven-degree Landau potential, the canonical form Wigwam or A6A_6, constitutes the adequate starting point to study the overall phase diagram of this model.Comment: 16 pages, Latex file, submitted to Phys.

Cavity evolution in relativistic self-gravitating fluids

We consider the evolution of cavities within spherically symmetric relativistic fluids, under the assumption that proper radial distance between neighboring fluid elements remains constant during their evolution (purely areal evolution condition). The general formalism is deployed and solutions are presented. Some of them satisfy Darmois conditions whereas others present shells and must satisfy Israel conditions, on either one or both boundary surfaces. Prospective applications of these results to some astrophysical scenarios is suggested.Comment: 10 pages Revtex. To appear in Class. Quantum Grav

Renormalization group flow with unstable particles

    Get PDF
The renormalization group flow of an integrable two dimensional quantum field theory which contains unstable particles is investigated. The analysis is carried out for the Virasoro central charge and the conformal dimensions as a function of the renormalization group flow parameter. This allows to identify the corresponding conformal field theories together with their operator content when the unstable particles vanish from the particle spectrum. The specific model considered is the SU(3)2SU(3)_{2}-homogeneous Sine-Gordon model.Comment: 5 pages Latex, 3 figure
