Seismic analysis of 70 Ophiuchi A: A new quantity proposed

The basic intent of this paper is to model 70 Ophiuchi A using the latest asteroseismic observations as complementary constraints and to determine the fundamental parameters of the star. Additionally, we propose a new quantity to lift the degeneracy between the initial chemical composition and stellar age. Using the Yale stellar evolution code (YREC7), we construct a series of stellar evolutionary tracks for the mass range MM = 0.85 -- 0.93 M⊙M_{\odot} with different composition YiY_{i} (0.26 -- 0.30) and ZiZ_{i} (0.017 -- 0.023). Along these tracks, we select a grid of stellar model candidates that fall within the error box in the HR diagram to calculate the theoretical frequencies, the large- and small- frequency separations using the Guenther's stellar pulsation code. Following the asymptotic formula of stellar pp-modes, we define a quantity r01r_{01} which is correlated with stellar age. Also, we test it by theoretical adiabatic frequencies of many models. Many detailed models of 70 Ophiuchi A have been listed in Table 3. By combining all non-asteroseismic observations available for 70 Ophiuchi A with these seismological data, we think that Model 60, Model 125 and Model 126, listed in Table 3, are the optimum models presently. Meanwhile, we predict that the radius of this star is about 0.860 -- 0.865 R⊙R_{\odot} and the age is about 6.8 -- 7.0 Gyr with mass 0.89 -- 0.90 M⊙M_{\odot}. Additionally, we prove that the new quantity r01r_{01} can be a useful indicator of stellar age.Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures, accepted by New Astronom

Asteroseismic study of solar-like stars: A method of estimating stellar age

Asteroseismology, as a tool to use the indirect information contained in stellar oscillations to probe the stellar interiors, is an active field of research presently. Stellar age, as a fundamental property of star apart from its mass, is most difficult to estimate. In addition, the estimating of stellar age can provide the chance to study the time evolution of astronomical phenomena. In our poster, we summarize our previous work and further present a method to determine age of low-mass main-sequence star.Comment: 2 pages, 1 figures, submitted to IAUS25

Using molten salt route (with NaCl/KCl as the salt) we have been able to synthesize a new form of magnesium tantalate at 850°C. Powder X-ray diffraction data could be indexed on an orthorhombic unit cell with lattice parameters, 'a' = 15.36(1) Å, 'b' = 13.38(1) Å and 'c' = 12.10(1) Å. High resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction studies confirm the results obtained by X-ray studies. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy helps ascertain the composition of MgTa2O6. The title compound shows a dielectric constant of ~24 with a low dielectric loss of 0·006 at 100 kHz at room temperature. Dielectric constant is nearly unchanged with rise in temperature while the loss shows a very marginal increase (0·007 at 300°C)

Experimental Observation of Energy Modulation in Electron Beams Passing Through Terahertz Dielectric Wakefield Structures

We report observation of a strong wakefield induced energy modulation in an energy-chirped electron bunch passing through a dielectric-lined waveguide. This modulation can be effectively converted into a spatial modulation forming micro-bunches with a periodicity of 0.5 - 1 picosecond, hence capable of driving coherent THz radiation. The experimental results agree well with theoretical predictions.Comment: v3. Reviewers' suggestions incorporated. Accepted by PR

Magnetic ground state of the Ising-like antiferromagnet DyScO3_3

We report the low temperature magnetic properties of the DyScO3_3 perovskite, which were characterized by means of single crystal and powder neutron scattering, and by magnetization measurements. Below TN=3.15T_{\mathrm{N}}=3.15 K, Dy3+^{3+} moments form an antiferromagnetic structure with an easy axis of magnetization lying in the abab-plane. The magnetic moments are inclined at an angle of ∼±28∘\sim\pm{28}^{\circ} to the bb-axis. We show that the ground state Kramers doublet of Dy3+^{3+} is made up of primarily ∣±15/2⟩|\pm 15/2\rangle eigenvectors and well separated by crystal field from the first excited state at E1=24.9E_1=24.9 meV. This leads to an extreme Ising single-ion anisotropy, M⊥/M∥∼0.05M_{\perp}/M_{\|}\sim{0.05}. The transverse magnetic fluctuations, which are proportional to M⊥2/M∥2M^{2}_{\perp}/M^{2}_{\|}, are suppressed and only moment fluctuations along the local Ising direction are allowed. We also found that the Dy-Dy dipolar interactions along the crystallographic cc-axis are 2-4 times larger than in-plane interactions.Comment: 9 pages and 6 figures; to be published in Phys. Rev.

Human and murine IFIT1 proteins do not restrict infection of negative-sense RNA viruses of the Orthomyxoviridae, Bunyaviridae, and Filoviridae families

UNLABELLED: Interferon-induced protein with tetratricopeptide repeats 1 (IFIT1) is a host protein with reported cell-intrinsic antiviral activity against several RNA viruses. The proposed basis for the activity against negative-sense RNA viruses is the binding to exposed 5\u27-triphosphates (5\u27-ppp) on the genome of viral RNA. However, recent studies reported relatively low binding affinities of IFIT1 for 5\u27-ppp RNA, suggesting that IFIT1 may not interact efficiently with this moiety under physiological conditions. To evaluate the ability of IFIT1 to have an impact on negative-sense RNA viruses, we infected Ifit1(-/-) and wild-type control mice and primary cells with four negative-sense RNA viruses (influenza A virus [IAV], La Crosse virus [LACV], Oropouche virus [OROV], and Ebola virus) corresponding to three distinct families. Unexpectedly, a lack of Ifit1 gene expression did not result in increased infection by any of these viruses in cell culture. Analogously, morbidity, mortality, and viral burdens in tissues were identical between Ifit1(-/-) and control mice after infection with IAV, LACV, or OROV. Finally, deletion of the human IFIT1 protein in A549 cells did not affect IAV replication or infection, and reciprocally, ectopic expression of IFIT1 in HEK293T cells did not inhibit IAV infection. To explain the lack of antiviral activity against IAV, we measured the binding affinity of IFIT1 for RNA oligonucleotides resembling the 5\u27 ends of IAV gene segments. The affinity for 5\u27-ppp RNA was approximately 10-fold lower than that for non-2\u27-O-methylated (cap 0) RNA oligonucleotides. Based on this analysis, we conclude that IFIT1 is not a dominant restriction factor against negative-sense RNA viruses. IMPORTANCE: Negative-sense RNA viruses, including influenza virus and Ebola virus, have been responsible for some of the most deadly outbreaks in recent history. The host interferon response and induction of antiviral genes contribute to the control of infections by these viruses. IFIT1 is highly induced after virus infection and reportedly has antiviral activity against several RNA and DNA viruses. However, its role in restricting infection by negative-sense RNA viruses remains unclear. In this study, we evaluated the ability of IFIT1 to inhibit negative-sense RNA virus replication and pathogenesis both in vitro and in vivo. Detailed cell culture and animal studies demonstrated that IFIT1 is not a dominant restriction factor against three different families of negative-sense RNA viruses
