Cytogenetics and FISH Studies in Multiple Myeloma – A Retrospective Study from Western India

Get PDF
Multiple myeloma is characterized by a complex pattern of extensive genomic aberrations involving many chromosomes and it constitutes about 1% of all malignancies. We have performed conventional cytogenetic (CC) and interphase FISH on 58 cases of MM. Results showed that from 58 cases, only 08 cases had abnormal karyotype by conventional cytogenetic. On the other hand, interphase FISH study with 58 MM patients revealed 08 patients with normal results while 50 patients showed complex genetic aberrations. It included deletions of 13q14 (48.3%), 17p13 (13.8%), 11q13 (27.6%) along with translocation of IgH involving t(4;14)(51.7%) and t(14;16)(1,7%). We conclude that interphase FISH study should be performed in conjunction with conventional cytogenetic for prognostic significance in MM

This paper presents a novel approach for an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for generating software for embedded systems using user friendly graphical interface. For the embedded software engineer, starting embedded application development can present a major hurdle. To develop an application for embedded systems there are many technologies and platforms available like RTOS or bare metal programing and many other tools and environment. But these things are conceptually very different. To further complicate matters, these tools are sometimes operating system specific. Embedded application development normally requires development tools that run under Linux according to their application hardware software specification. The programmer therefore needs to first learn the basics of desktop Linux and related tools and their interface subsystems under various kernel images. After all this complications, there are various choices for open source development tools each having its own methods and practices. Although the technology is very powerful, it creates a big complication as one attempts to find a learning path. Thus one should work on techniques which streamlines the whole development process and makes it easy to develop embedded software. A unique user friendly Integrated Development Environment with the help of graphics user interface can be developed for direct code generation which can directly work with targeted embedded hardware. Lead is highly toxic, impairing biological functions of aquatic animals. In vitro, static test was performed to find out the accumulation of lead in the muscle of brackish water fish (Boleopthalmus dussumieri). Fish were maintained in experimental aquaria with lead nitrate solution having known lead concentration of 1.48 and 14.8 mg/l, respectively. The experiments were performed in triplicate. Two fishes from each exposed aquarium were sampled on zero hour, 96 hours and 192 hours. Muscle was removed and processed prior to analysis of lead concentration by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. The amount of lead accumulated in muscle of experimental fish increased steadily with the period of exposure. The lead accumulated in fish muscle was 29.60±6.62 ?g/g at 96 hours of exposure and accumulated up to 72.48±14.18 ?g/g in 192 hours of exposure period at the highest concentration. Significant relationship between accumulation and exposure period as well as exposed concentration (p < 0.05) at the significance level of 95 % was recorded. The present study indicated that the fishes living in mudflats of brackish water bodies receiving industrial as well as anthropogenic waste water containing an assortment of heavy metals can accumulate them in considerable concentrations

Anticancer Drugs Induced Chromosomal Rearrangements in Lymphocytes of Breast Cancer Patients

Get PDF
Breast cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed malignancies in women around the world. Chromosomal rearrangements are known to play important role in the pathogenesis of many diseases including cancer. In case of breast cancer, chromosomal changes are detectable at all stages of tumour development providing excellent opportunity for prognosis and therapy. Present work aimed to study the frequency of chromosomal aberrations and satellite associations in human peripheral blood lymphocyte culture of freshly diagnosed breast cancer patients after in vitro exposure to combination of anticancer drug treatment. The present study reveals that, combination of anticancer drugs significantly increases chromosomal aberrations without altering the frequency of satellite associations

Supersymmetric Quotients of M-Theory and Supergravity Backgrounds

In this thesis we explore discrete quotients of maximally supersymmetric supergravity backgrounds. Our main focus will be on eleven-dimensional backgrounds preserving all 32 supercharges. We shall first consider quotients of the sphere part of the maximally supersymmetric Freund-Rubin background AdS4 ×S7. Our aim will be to determine the supersymmetry preserved in the resulting background. The quotients will be by freely acting discrete subgroups G, of the isometry group of S7. These subgroups have been classified as part of a wider classification of subgroups acting freely and properly discontinuously on the n-sphere. This classification was not easy: many partial results were obtained until Wolf's solution [37]. For each possible quotient S7/G, called a spherical space form, we shall determine if it is a spin manifold and if so how much supersymmetry, v/32 , the corresponding background AdS4 ×(S7/G) preserves. This investigation leads us to the result that spin structure and orientation dictate supersymmetry, of the quotient S7/G, thus highlighting the importance of specifying these factors as part of the data defining a supergravity background. The second part of this thesis looks at discrete quotients of all the maximally supersymmetric supergravity backgrounds in ten and eleven dimensions. In this case, our aim is to see if some discrete subgroup G of the four-form-preserving isometries of the background preserves a fraction 31 32 of the supersymmetry. Such a background with 31 supercharges is called a preon. We shall boil down this problem to checking if some element , in the image of the exponential map from the Lie algebra to the symmetry group of the background, which preserves at least 30 supercharges will preserve 31. The motivation to consider such quotients 5 comes from [24], where it was shown that if such backgrounds exist then they are necessarily discrete quotients of maximally supersymmetric backgrounds. We shall show that ultimately no such quotients preserve 31 32 supercharges, thus ruling out the existence of preons. The bulk of our work is on the eleven-dimensional case, however we shall also derive results for the ten-dimensional case which follow from our investigation in eleven dimensions
