    Acumulación de Cu y Zn por célular microalgales marinas de Nannochloropsis gaditana (Eustigmatophyceae) inmovilizadas en alginato de calcio

    13 páginas, 5 figuras, 2 tablas.[EN] Different experiments about the accumulation capacity for copper and zinc were carried out on the marine microalgae Nannochloropsis gaditana Lubián (Eustigmatophyceae). A 24-hour study of the evolution of accumulated metal in the beads revealed two possible accumulation phases. Accumulation differences between free and immobilized microalgal cells were investigated finding no differences for copper, and little differences for zinc. Free cells accumulated practically 100% Cu or Zn in the media under experimental conditions. Experiments in order to compare the accumulation capacity of living vs. dead cells were designed too, obtaining the largest accumulation levels for both metals in the beads containing immobilized living microalgae. In experiments carried out in continuous-flow reactors, beads with entrapped cells showed to be more efficient removing Cu and Zn than beads without cells. In all the experiments, the calcium alginate beads showed strong affinity for Cu. Similar results were obtained when accumulation by packed beads in columns was tested, but efficacy was higher if this design was used (beads with cells retain 80% of Cu introduced in the column).[ES] Se han realizado distintos experimentos sobre la capacidad de acumulación de cobre y zinc por parte de la microalga marina Nannochloropsis gaditana Lubián (Eustigmatophyceae). Un estudio de la evolución del metal acumulado durante 24 horas reveló la existencia de dos posibles fases de acumulación. Se investigaron las diferentes capacidades de acumulación de células microalgales libres e inmovilizadas, no encontrándose diferencias para el cobre y pequeñas diferencias para el zinc. Las células libres acumularon prácticamente el 100% del Cu o Zn presentes en el medio, en las condiciones experimentales. Se desarrollaron experimentos encaminados a determinar la capacidad de acumulación de estos metales por parte de algas inmovilizadas vivas frente a la de algas inmovilizadas muertas, encontrándose los niveles acumulativos más altos para ambos metales en las gotas de alginato que contenían algas vivas. En experimentos realizados en reactores de flujo continuo, las gotas de alginato con células inmovilizadas en su interior demostraron ser más eficientes en cuanto a la retirada de Cu y Zn del medio que las gotas sin algas. En todos los experimentos realizados se observa una fuerte afinidad del Cu por el alginato de calcio. Se obtuvieron resultados similares cuando se ensayó la acumulación de metales en gotas de alginato dispuestas en columnas llenas, aunque la eficacia fue mayor cuando se usó este último diseño (las gotas de alginato con células retuvieron el 80% del Cu introducido en la columna).Peer reviewe

    Aging and Degradation in Dilute Polymer Solutions

    This paper describes studies of the properties of dilute solutions of polymers which have been found to reduce friction in turbulent flows. The substances tested, in solution in tap water, were guar gum, polyethylene oxide (Union Carbide 'Polyox' WSR 301) and polyacrylamide (Dow 'Separan' AP 30). It had been previously found that solutions of 'Polyox' and 'Separan' exhibit normal-stress difference effects. Correspondingly for'Polyox' solutions, it has been reported that the pressure increment at the mouth of a pitot tube, or open-ended tube facing into the flow, can be reduced below the value [formula] normal for Newtonian liquids, where [Greek rho] is density and V is speed. The present experiments began as a further investigation of this loss of pitot pressure. It was found that the pitot loss reduced with time, and that with 'Polyox' solutions other normal-stress difference effects showed a similar aging, without apparently impairing the ability of the liquid to produce turbulent drag reduction. Continued exposure of the liquid to intense turbulence does, however, lead to a degradation of the drag reduction

    Influence of metals and metalloids on the composition and fluorescence quenching of the extracellular polymeric substances produced by the polymorphic fungus <i>Aureobasidium pullulans</i>

    Aureobasidium pullulansis a ubiquitous and widely distributed fungus in the environment, and exhibits substantial tolerance against toxic metals. However, the interactions between metals and metalloids with the copious extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) produced byA. pullulansand possible relationships to tolerance are not well understood. In this study, it was found that mercury (Hg) and selenium (Se), as selenite, not only significantly inhibited growth ofA. pullulansbut also affected the composition of produced EPS. Lead (Pb) showed little influence on EPS yield or composition. The interactions of EPS fromA. pullulanswith the tested metals and metalloids depended on the specific element and their concentration. Fluorescence intensity measurements of the EPS showed that the presence of metal(loid)s stimulated the production of extracellular tryptophan-like and aromatic protein-like substances. Examination of fluorescence quenching and calculation of binding constants revealed that the fluorescence quenching process for Hg; arsenic (As), as arsenite; and Pb to EPS were mainly governed by static quenching which resulted in the formation of a stable non-fluorescent complexes between the EPS and metal(loid)s. Se showed no significant interaction with the EPS according to fluorescence quenching. These results provide further understanding of the interactions between metals and metalloids and EPS produced by fungi and their contribution to metal(loid) tolerance

    The effect of the noncentral impurity-matrix interaction upon the thermal expansion and polyamorphism of solid CO-C60 solutions at low temperatures

    Orientational glasses with CO molecules occupying 26% and 90% of the octahedral interstitial sites in the C60 lattice have been investigated by the dilatometric method in a temperature interval of 2.5 - 23 K. At temperatures 4 - 6 K the glasses undergo a first-order phase transition which is evident from the hysteresis of the thermal expansion and the maxima in the temperature dependences of the linear thermal expansion coefficients, and the thermalization times of the samples. The effect of the noncentral CO-C60 interaction upon the thermal expansion and the phase transition in these glasses was clarified by comparing the behavior of the properties of the CO-C60 and N2-C60 solutions.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figure

    Biotransformation of lanthanum by Aspergillus niger

    Lanthanum is an important rare earth element and has many applications in modern electronics and catalyst manufacturing. However, there exist several obstacles in the recovery and cycling of this element due to a low average grade in exploitable deposits and low recovery rates by energy-intensive extraction procedures. In this work, a novel method to transform and recover La has been proposed using the geoactive properties of Aspergillus niger. La-containing crystals were formed and collected after A. niger was grown on Czapek-Dox agar medium amended with LaCl 3. Energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDXA) showed the crystals contained C, O, and La; scanning electron microscopy revealed that the crystals were of a tabular structure with terraced surfaces. X-ray diffraction identified the mineral phase of the sample as La 2(C 2O 4) 3·10H 2O. Thermogravimetric analysis transformed the oxalate crystals into La 2O 3 with the kinetics of thermal decomposition corresponding well with theoretical calculations. Geochemical modelling further confirmed that the crystals were lanthanum decahydrate and identified optimal conditions for their precipitation. To quantify crystal production, biomass-free fungal culture supernatants were used to precipitate La. The results showed that the precipitated lanthanum decahydrate achieved optimal yields when the concentration of La was above 15 mM and that 100% La was removed from the system at 5 mM La. Our findings provide a new aspect in the biotransformation and biorecovery of rare earth elements from solution using biomass-free fungal culture systems. </p

    The Dynamics of Domestic Abuse and Drug and Alcohol Dependency

    This article elucidates the dynamics that occur in relationships where there has been both substance use and domestic abuse. It draws interpretively on in-depth qualitative interviews with male perpetrators and their current and former partners. These interviews were undertaken for the NIHR funded ADVANCE Programme. The article’s analysis highlights the diverse ways in which domestic abuse by substance-using male partners is compounded for: women who have never been substance dependent; women who have formerly been substance dependent; and women who are currently substance dependent. The criminological implications of the competing models of change deployed in drug treatment and domestic violence intervention are discussed alongside the policy and practice challenges entailed in reconciling them within intervention contexts where specialist service provision has been scaled back and victims navigate pressures to stay with perpetrators while they undergo treatment alongside the threat of sanction should they seek protection from the police and courts

    Low temperature heat capacity of fullerite C60 doped with nitrogen

    The heat capacity Cm of polycrystalline fullerite C60 doped with nitrogen has been measured in the temperature interval 2 - 13 K. The contributions to heat capacity from translational lattice vibrations (Debye contribution), orientational vibrations of the C60 molecules (Einstein contribution) and from the motion of the N2 molecules in the octahedral cavities of the C60 lattice have been estimated. However, we could not find (beyond the experimental error limits) any indications of the first - order phase transformation that had been detected earlier in the dilatometric investigation of the orientational N2-C60 glass.
