The Many Functions of Discourse Particles: A Computational Model of Pragmatic Interpretation

We present a connectionist model for the interpretation of discourse\ud particles in real dialogues that is based on neuronal\ud principles of categorization (categorical perception, prototype\ud formation, contextual interpretation). It can be shown that\ud discourse particles operate just like other morphological and\ud lexical items with respect to interpretation processes. The description\ud proposed locates discourse particles in an elaborate\ud model of communication which incorporates many different\ud aspects of the communicative situation. We therefore also\ud attempt to explore the content of the category discourse particle.\ud We present a detailed analysis of the meaning assignment\ud problem and show that 80%– 90% correctness for unseen discourse\ud particles can be reached with the feature analysis provided.\ud Furthermore, we show that ‘analogical transfer’ from\ud one discourse particle to another is facilitated if prototypes\ud are computed and used as the basis for generalization. We\ud conclude that the interpretation processes which are a part of\ud the human cognitive system are very similar with respect to\ud different linguistic items. However, the analysis of discourse\ud particles shows clearly that any explanatory theory of language\ud needs to incorporate a theory of communication processes

The IAB establishment panel : from sample to survey to projection

"The IAB Establishment Panel is an annual survey of establishments and is unique in Germany, as it represents all industries and establishment sizes nationwide and can also be analysed on a longitudinal basis. The design of the IAB Establishment Panel was developed in the early 1990s and subjected to a wide range of tests. This process also involved parallel development activities taking place on the Hannover Firm Panel, which were carried out on behalf of the "Forschungsstelle Firmenpanel" at the University of Hanover (Gerlach et al.: 1998) and the Institute for Applied Economic Research in Tübingen (IAW). The survey began in West Germany in 1993, with the aim of building up a representative information system for continuous analysis of labour demand. It has been carried out in East Germany since 1996, making it a nationwide survey. The IAB Establishment Panel is conceived as a longitudinal survey, i.e. a large majority of the same establishments are interviewed every year. Consequently, it enables both analysis of developments across time through comparison of cross-sectional data on different points in time, and also longitudinal studies of individual establishments. Now in the IAB Establishment Panel approx. 16,000 establishments are surveyed on a large number of employment policy-related subjects, including employment development, business policy and business development, investment activities, innovations in the establishment, public funding, personnel structure, vocational training and apprenticeships, new and exiting personnel, recruitment, wages and salaries, working times in the establishment, further training and general data on the establishment. The survey also includes varying focal topics every year. With the exception of Hamburg, all the German federal states (Bundesländer) currently contribute regional extension samples to the IAB Establishment Panel. This firstly enables evaluations on the federal state level, and secondly results in a total range of samples that significantly widens the evaluation options on the nationwide level. The IAB Establishment Panel contains high data quality, achieved by means of the high-quality sample, the high exploitation level and the sophisticated process of data monitoring and error correction. The survey is carried out by TNS Infratest Sozialforschung GmbH on behalf of the IAB. A general introduction to the IAB Establishment Panel is contained in German in Bellmann (2002) or in English in Kölling (2000). The IAB Establishment Panel is based on a complex study design, which also presents challenges for users of the dataset. This paper provides an overview of the methodology of the IAB Establishment Panel. It goes into detail on the design of the samples and survey, the weighting process, and data access at the Research Data Centre (FDZ) of the Federal Employment Agency (BA) at the Institute for Employment Research (IAB). The most important points are presented at the beginning of each chapter. It is intended for users of the IAB Establishment Panel, firstly as a collection of methodological aspects of the IAB Establishment Panel, and secondly to make it easier for first-time users in particular to start using the data. The structure and classification of the Mozambique Ridge based on seismic reflection data

The Mozambique Ridge (MozR), a prominent basement high in the southwestern Indian Ocean, consists of four major geomorphological units associated with numerous phases of volcanic activity between 140 Ma and 122 Ma. Over the last decades nature and origin of the Mozambique Ridge have been intensely debated with one hypothesis suggesting a Large Igneous Province (LIP) origin. This would have had immense influence on climate during the early Cretaceous with the emission of gases and heat into atmosphere and ocean but also implications on the development of the South African gateway with the formation of obstacles for surface and deep circulation. An extensive seismic survey was conducted over the Mozambique Ridge with the aim of solving the questions about its origin and evolution. High-resolution seismic reflection data reveals a number of magmatic centers with a random distribution. Intra-basement reflections can be identified up to several hundred ms TWT below top of basement. The internal reflections generally dip away from their magmatic centers and individual reflections can typically be traced for 5-15 km. These are interpreted to represent massive lava flow units, which are characteristic of oceanic plateau eruptions. Additionally to primary volcanic features associated with the initial emplacement of the individual segments of the Mozambique Ridge we identify secondary volcanic features indicating magmatic reactivation after its initial build-up. The total volume of the southern Mozambique Ridge is estimated to be 2.2 x 106 km3. We use this estimation to obtain a more precise reconstruction for the emplacement of the Mozambique Ridge. Based on our results we propose an oceanic LIP origin of the southern Mozambique Ridge and show that our data points toward a sequential development of its segments

Anerkennung – Modus des Ausschlusses oder eigenmächtige Praxis der Selbstaufwertung?

Anerkennung beschreibt eine normative Voraussetzung für soziale Zugehörigkeit. Gleichzeitig lässt sich Anerkennung als Praxis verstehen, die innerhalb in von sozialen Ungleichheiten geprägten Gesellschaften stattfindet, deren Hierarchien selbst durch Anerkennungsprozesse hergestellt und reproduziert werden. Es stellt sich also die Frage: Ist Anerkennung ein Modus des Ausschlusses oder ein Modus der Überwindung des Ausschlusses?Dieser Frage wird sowohl theoretisch als auch mit empirischen Analysen von individuellen Anerkennungspraktiken nachgegangen und damit die Komplexität von Anerkennungsprozessen aufgezeigt. Der thematische Fokus liegt auf dem Zusammendenken von Arbeit (Erwerbs- und Reproduktionsarbeit), Berufs-  und Geschlechterhierarchie. Folgende Aspekte werden beleuchtet:Axel Honneth (1994) konzipiert Anerkennung als normatives gesellschaftliches Ziel, woraus sich Nicht-Anerkennung bzw. Missachtung als defizitär ableiten lässt. Judith Butler fokussiert auf den Rahmen der Anerkennbarkeit (2003: 63) und damit auf die Frage, was als mehr oder weniger anerkennbar gilt. Für die theoretische Konzeption von Anerkennung wird relevant, ob Anerkennung binär oder als Kontinuum gedacht werden kann.Im Beitrag wird vorgeschlagen, Anerkennung als soziale Praxis zu verstehen, die in gesellschaftlichen Hierarchien stattfindet. Über Anerkennungspraktiken wird dabei nicht nur eine gesellschaftliche Position des Individuums erzeugt, sondern es entstehen multiple Positionierungen (Fischer 2015). Das Bedürfnis nach Anerkennung ist damit mit komplexen Praktiken der Anerkennung und unterschiedlichen hierarchischen Positionierungen verbunden. Diese Komplexität soll auf der Ebene der Akteur_innen verdeutlicht und vor diesem Hintergrund die Relevanz von Anerkennung für soziale Ein- oder Ausschlüsse diskutiert werden

Mutter, Rabenmutter, Rebell, Chirurgin – kritische Positionierungen zwischen Macht und Ermächtigung : Eine anerkennungstheoretische Perspektive auf die Matrix Erwerbsarbeit, Care-Verhältnisse und Geschlechternormen

Berufsorientierung, Geschlechterverhältnisse, Erwerbsarbeit und Care-Verhältnisse beschreiben eine Matrix, innerhalb derer gesellschaftliche Hierarchien ausgehandelt werden. Individuen sind gefordert, innerhalb dieser Hierarchien Selbstentwürfe zu gestalten. Der vorliegende Beitrag schlägt vor, diese Selbstbildungsprozesse annerkennungstheoretisch zu analysieren und legt dabei den Fokus auf Anerkennungspraktiken. Dazu wird das Konzept von Anerkennungspraktiken theoretisch entwickelt und empirisch angewendet. In biographischen Erzählungen von Chirurg_innen und Friseur_innen, die in vergeschlechtlichten und hierarchisch weit auseinander liegenden Berufen tätig sind, werden Anerkennungspraktiken rekonstruiert. Diese haben unterschiedliche und hierarchisierte Subjektpositionen zur Folge, die für die Individuen jeweils Handlungsbeschränkungen darstellen, aber auch Chancen zur Selbstermächtigung bieten. This article focusses on selfbuilding processes in this field with a theo- retical framework of recognition and, more specifically, recognition understood as a form of social practice. On the empirical base of biographical narratives of male and female surgeons and hairdressers, social practices of recognition are being reconstructed by analyzing which different hierarchical social positions are gathered. The theoretical and empirical analysis shows that different hierarchical positions are being constructed and both of them imply moments of constraints as well as moments of empowerment. This results underline that social hierarchies need to be seen as relevant parts of selfbuilding processes
