    HOMEOPATHIC PRODUCT IN DOG DIETS MODULATE BLOOD CELL RESPONSES

    Every year, numbers and life expectancies of pets increase, especially for dogs and cats. Pets are exposed to environmental factors such as pollutants, pathogens, and oxidants that hamper the animals’ ability to respond to stressors. Nutrition and hygiene are increasingly important among animal professionals and pet owners. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a commercially-available homeopathic herbal product formulated with plants, designed to stimulate canine immunity. We used 10 male dogs (beagles) weighing 5.5–6 kg and 5 months of age. Animals were randomly allocated to Control (C, n = 5) and Treated (T, n = 5) groups. The treated group received a basal diet with an additional dose of 0.5 mL/animal/day homeopathic solution and group C received only the basal diet (300 g/day). The product was supplied for 45 days. The animals were weighed and blood samples collected for complete blood counts and serum biochemistry on days 1, 15, 30 and 45 of the experiment. Higher numbers of lymphocytes were observed in conjunction with lower numbers of neutrophils in the T group on days 30 and 45. Total and neutrophil leukocytes decreased throughout the experiment in both groups, and lymphocytes increased with significant difference only in the T group. Erythrocytes and hematocrit increased in both groups over time, as did glucose, triglycerides, total protein, albumin and urea levels. ALT was higher in the control group on day 45. We conclude that the use of a homeopathic agent stimulated lymphocyte production in healthy dogs; and this suggests that homeopathic use is beneficial, because lymphocytes are directly related to cellular and humoral immune responses. Studies in adult animals and those focusing on infectious challenges may reveal more information about the actions of this homeopathic agent

    AVALIAÇÃO IN VITRO DOS EFEITOS INSETICIDA E LARVICIDA DE OITO ÓLEOS ESSÊNCIAIS SOBRE O CASCUDINHO AVIÁRIO (Alphitobius diaperinus)

    Alphitobius diaperinus, popularmente conhecido como o cascudinho de aviário, é um inseto que se destaca na avicultura por ser vetor de patógenos e de difícil controle. Esta dificuldade está relacionada à contra-indicação na utilização de produtos químicos, já que enquanto as aves estão no aviário, grandes prejuízos podem ocorrer em consequência de elevadas infestações. Portanto, produtos naturais com potencial inseticida e larvicida poderiam ser usados, sem prejudicar as aves e sem deixar resíduo na carne do frango. Em virtude disso, neste estudo objetivou-se verificar o efeito dos óleos de Capim limão (Cymbopogon citratus), Cedro (Cedrus atlantica), Gengibre (Zingiber officinale), Gerânio (Pelargonium graveolens), Junípero (Juniperus communis), Palmarosa (Cymbopogon martinii), Tomilho (Thymus vulgaris) e Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides) sobre a suscetibilidade de A. diaperinus. Os testes foram realizados em triplicata com os óleos essenciais nas concentrações de 1, 5 e 10%. A fim de validar os testes, foram utilizados dois controles: sem tratamento e com diluente (Triton). O efeito inseticida do óleo de Capim limão não foi satisfatório, pois a mortalidade superior a 50% foi atingida 15 dias após início do teste. O óleo de Cedro não demostrou efeito significativo sobre adultos e larvas, pois os valores de mortalidade foram inferiores a 50% em todas as concentrações avaliadas. Os efeitos inseticidas e larvicidas não foram observados nos demais óleos nas concentrações testadas neste experimento (P>0,05).  Portanto, com base nos resultados dos testes in vitro podemos concluir que os óleos testados neste trabalho não apresentam efeitos inseticidas e larvicidas nas concentrações testadas, sobre A. diaperinus e, com isso, são inadequados para o controle alternativo desta praga

    Protozoos gastrointestinales en terneros lecheros: identificación de factores de riesgo para la infección

    Objective. This study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of gastrointestinal protozoa in dairy calves and to identify potential risk factors for this type of infection. Materials and methods. For this purpose, 243 fecal samples were collected from calves up to 60 days of age in 43 dairy farms located in the West region of Santa Catarina state, Brazil. Samples were examined by centrifugal-flotation technique. Results. As a result, Giardia was present in 26.75% (65/243) of all samples, Eimeria in 21.81% (53/243), and Cryptosporidium in 20.99% (51/243). Additionally, 46.50% (113/243) of the samples were negative for any protozoa, while 39.10% (95/243) and 14.40% (35/208) showed single and mixed infections, respectively. There was a higher association between Cryptosporidium and Giardia (6.99%) in cases of mixed infections. However, the triple protozoa association had the lowest prevalence in mixed infections (2.06%). Epidemiologically, a questionnaire was applied to determine risk factors for these parasitic infections. Based on the statistical model applied, some risk factors for Cryptosporidium infections were identified, highlighting feeding management, period of time that calves stayed with their mothers (cows), and contact with dogs; the risk of contracting Giardia increased according to the milk source, while the floor type bedding, and age were appointed as risks factors for Eimeria. Conclusions. Therefore, it is possible to confirm that Giardia, Cryptosporidium and Eimeria may infect dairy calves, and the knowledge of some risk factors associated to their infection in calves.Objetivo. El objetivo evaluar la ocurrencia de protozoos gastrointestinales en terneros lecheros y de identificar posibles factores de riesgo para infección. Materiales y métodos. Se recogieron 243 muestras de heces de terneros de hasta 60 días de edad en 43 granjas lecheras ubicadas en la región del oeste del estado de Santa Catarina, Brasil. Las muestras fueron examinadas por la técnica de centrifugación-flotación. Resultados. Como resultado, Giardia estaba presente en 26.75% (65/243) de todas las muestras, Eimeria en 21.81% (53/243), y Cryptosporidium en 20.99% (51/243). Además, 46.50% (113/243) de las muestras fueron negativas para cualquier protozoos, mientras que 39.10% (95/243) y 14.40% (35/208) mostraron infecciones simples y mixtas, respectivamente. Hubo una mayor asociación entre Cryptosporidium y Giardia (6.99%) en los casos de infecciones mixtas. Sin embargo, la asociación de triple protozoos tenía la menor prevalencia de infecciones mixtas (2.06%). Epidemiológicamente, se aplicó un cuestionario para determinar los factores de riesgo para estas infecciones parasitarias. Se han identificado algunos factores de riesgo de infecciones por Cryptosporidium, destacando manejo de la alimentación, periodo de tiempo que los terneros permanecieron con sus madres (vacas), y el contacto con los perros; el riesgo de contraer Giardia incrementado en función de la fuente de la leche, mientras que el tipo de suelo de las camas, y la edad fueron nombrados como los riesgos de factores de Eimeria. Conclusiones. Es posible confirmar que Giardia, Cryptosporidium y Eimeria pueden infectar a terneros lecheros, y el conocimiento de algunos factores de riesgo asociados a la infección en terneros

    Influence of gastrointestinal parasitism on biochemical variables in blood of laying hens

    ABSTRACT Objective. This study describes the influence of endoparasites and diet on biochemical variables in sera of brown laying hens. Materials and methods. Biochemical parameters (seric levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, total protein, uric acid, albumin, and alanine aminotransferase activity) were assessed in blood samples of poultry. Three populations of laying hens of different properties (n=20 each) represented our experimental design, from which blood (serum) and feces were collected for biochemical and parasitological analyzes, respectively. Results. From 60 feces samples evaluated 49 were positive for the presence of parasites and 11 were negative. Among the positive samples, 23 had infection with Eimeria spp and the other 26 samples had mixed parasitism with Eimeria spp and Heterakis gallinarum, which influenced (increasing) the levels of total protein and globulin. However, when parasites were analyzed separately, it was observed that the infection by Eimeria spp affected parameters such as cholesterol (which increased, p=0.001) and triglycerides, showing lower results than when the hen was parasitized by Eimeria spp. (p=0.01). Significant (p<0.05) difference was observed in all biochemical variables when the three diets were compared. Conclusions. Our results allowed concluding that the parasitic infection and diet in laying hens influenced the results of serum biochemical parameters evaluated. The main conclusion we found that parasitism caused an increase in total protein and globulin (ie immune response), and there was a negative correlation between parasite load and albumin, uric acid and ALT

    Comprehensive patient care in urgent and emergency situations is essential to guarantee the quality and effectiveness of healthcare. This study presents an integrative review of the literature that explores approaches and strategies to provide this comprehensive care, considering the complexity of these scenarios. Through the analysis of several studies and specialized literature, the main elements that make up comprehensive care for patients in critical situations are identified. These approaches include effective screening, interprofessional communication, application of updated clinical protocols, and consideration of the patient's psychosocial needs. The literature review highlights the importance of training the healthcare team and adequately coordinating resources to ensure comprehensive and effective care for patients in urgencies and emergencies. Comprehensive patient care in urgencies and emergencies is a complex challenge, but fundamental to the success of healthcare in these contexts. This study highlights the need for interdisciplinary approaches, well-defined protocols and effective communication between the healthcare team to ensure that all dimensions of the patient's health are considered. Additionally, attention to the patient's psychosocial and emotional needs plays a critical role in recovery and overall well-being. Therefore, investing in team training and adequate coordination of resources is essential to provide comprehensive care to patients in urgent and emergency situations.A atenção integral ao paciente em situações de urgência e emergência é fundamental para garantir a qualidade e a eficácia dos cuidados de saúde. Este estudo apresenta uma revisão integrativa da literatura que explora abordagens e estratégias para fornecer essa atenção integral, considerando a complexidade desses cenários. Através da análise de diversos estudos e literatura especializada, identificam-se os principais elementos que compõem a atenção integral ao paciente em situações críticas. Estas abordagens incluem a triagem eficaz, a comunicação interprofissional, a aplicação de protocolos clínicos atualizados e a consideração das necessidades psicossociais do paciente. A revisão bibliográfica destaca a importância da capacitação da equipe de saúde e da coordenação adequada dos recursos para garantir uma atenção integral e eficaz ao paciente em urgências e emergências. A atenção integral ao paciente em urgências e emergências é um desafio complexo, mas fundamental para o sucesso dos cuidados de saúde nesses contextos. Este estudo destaca a necessidade de abordagens interdisciplinares, protocolos bem definidos e comunicação eficaz entre a equipe de saúde para garantir que todas as dimensões da saúde do paciente sejam consideradas. Além disso, a atenção às necessidades psicossociais e emocionais do paciente desempenha um papel crítico na recuperação e no bem-estar geral.     Uso de secnidazol y homeopatía para el control de giardiasis en perros

    Dogs with Giardia infections have diarrhea that persists for days, even after treatment. We managed canine giardiasis using two distinct approaches: treatment with the antiprotozoan secnidazole alone; and secnidazole plus a homeopathic product that is indicated for control of diarrhea in dogs. Treatment I: Ten beagle dogs showed clinical signs of severe diarrhea. Their feces revealed large numbers of cysts consistent with Giardia sp. Therefore, we treated the dogs with secnidazole (10 mg/kg, single dose) given orally. Five days after treatment, all dogs were negative for Giardia spp. Treatment II: Three months later, the same ten Beagles again presented with diarrhea. Feces were collected, revealing Giardia sp. in all dogs. This time, we treated them with an antiprotozoan (secnidazole, 10 mg/kg dose) combined with a commercial homeopathic drug for diarrhea control (3 g dose/animal at 12 h interval). We found that three to five homeopathic doses were needed to achieve normal fecal scores in all dogs. After 5 days of treatment, stool samples had normal consistency and were negative for Giardia. This is the first record of using secnidazole to control canine giardiasis associated with homeopathic drugs to prevent diarrhea.Los perros con infecciones por Giardia tienen diarrea que persiste durante días, incluso después del tratamiento. Manejamos la giardiasis canina usando dos enfoques distintos: tratamiento con el secnidazol antiprotozoario solo; y secnidazol más un producto homeopático indicado para el control de la diarrea en perros. Tratamiento I: Diez perros beagle mostraron signos clínicos de diarrea severa. Sus heces revelaron una gran cantidad de quistes compatibles con Giardia sp. Por lo tanto, tratamos a los perros con secnidazol (10 mg/kg, dosis única) por vía oral. Cinco días después del tratamiento, todos los perros fueron negativos para Giardia spp. Tratamiento II: Tres meses después, los mismos diez Beagles nuevamente presentaron diarrea. Se recogieron las heces, revelando Giardia sp. en todos los perros. Esta vez, los tratamos con un antiprotozoo (secnidazol, dosis de 10 mg/kg) combinado con un medicamento homeopático comercial para el control de la diarrea (dosis de 3 g/animal a intervalos de 12 h). Descubrimos que se necesitaban de tres a cinco dosis homeopáticas para lograr puntajes fecales normales en todos los perros. Después de 5 días de tratamiento, las muestras de heces tuvieron una consistencia normal y fueron negativas para Giardia. Este estudio describe la influencia de la dieta sobre los endoparásitos y variables bioquímicas en el suero de las gallinas ponedoras marrones. Materiales y métodos. Los parámetros bioquímicos (niveles séricos de colesterol, triglicéridos, proteínas totales, ácido úrico, albúmina, y la actividad de la alanina aminotransferasa) se evaluaron en muestras de sangre de las aves de corral. Tres poblaciones de gallinas ponedoras de distintas propiedades (n=20 cada uno) representan nuestro diseño experimental, de la que se recogieron la sangre (suero) y las heces de bioquímica y análisis parasitológico, respectivamente. Resultados. De 60 muestras de heces evaluadas, 49 fueron positivos para la presencia de parásitos y 11 fueron negativos. Entre las muestras positivas, 23 tenían infección con Eimeria spp y las otras 26 muestras tenían parasitismo mezclado con Eimeria spp y Heterakis gallinarum, que influyó (aumentando) los niveles de proteína total y globulina. Sin embargo, cuando se analizaron por separado los parásitos, se observó que la infección por Eimeria spp afectó parámetros tales como el colesterol (el cual se incrementó p=0.001) y los triglicéridos, que mostraron resultados más bajos que cuando las gallinas fueron parasitadas por Eimeria spp. (p=0.01). Se observó diferencia (p<0.05) en todas las variables bioquímicas, cuando se compararon las tres dietas. Conclusiones. Nuestros resultados permitieron concluir que la infección parasitaria y la dieta de las gallinas ponedoras influyeron en los resultados de los parámetros bioquímicos séricos evaluados. La principal conclusión que se encontró es que el parasitismo causó un aumento de la proteína total y la globulina (es decir, la respuesta inmune), y hubo una correlación negativa entre la carga de parásitos y albúmina, ácido úrico y ALT

    Background: Curcumin has been used as an additive in the diet of animals in recent years due to the potent medicinal properties of this molecule. Objective: To evaluate whether the addition of curcumin to the diet of calves at different phases (pre- and post-weaning) has a positive effect on metabolic profile, performance, and anti-coccidian action. Methods: Thirtythree Holstein calves were selected at various phases of development: Experiment 1 (E1: n=10) 18±7 (pre-weaning), Experiment 2 (E2: n=11) 64±4 (pre-weaning) and Experiment 3 (E3: n=12) 95±8 (post-weaning) days of life. The calves were separated in three groups according to their phase of development. In each experiment, animals were divided into two sub-groups: control and curcumin. The curcumin groups received 200 mg of additive per animal/day either in milk (pre-weaning) or concentrate (post-weaning). Fecal collections were performed on days 0, 10 and 15 of the experiment to count Eimeria oocysts per gram of feces and to perform fecal score analysis. Complete blood counts, oxidant and antioxidant profiles, protein metabolism markers, lipid levels, glucose levels, and animal weights were measured. Analyses of digestibility and composition of the diet used in Experiment 3 (post-weaning) were also performed. Results: Independent of phase, animals that received curcumin had greater weight gain on days 0 to 15 (E1, E2 and E3 p=0.04, 0.001 and 0.001, respectively), probably due to the increased digestibility of hay and concentrate at 72h (p=0.03 and 0.02, respectively). The supplemented calves had lower level of oxidants (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances –TBARS- and reactive oxygen species –ROS-), indicating that free radical levels in serum and lipid peroxidation were lower. This was probably due to increased enzymatic antioxidants gluthatione S-transferase (E1, E2 and E3 p=0.001, 0.001 and 0.02, respectively), catalase (E1 p=0.001) and superoxide dismutase (E3 p=0.001) in treated animals at day 15. Furthermore, calves receiving curcumin had lower numeric number of Eimeria infection during the experimental period, and the difference was significant in day 15 (E1 and E2 p=0.02, and 0.001, respectively). Conclusion: Curcumin supplementation to dairy calves has coccidiostatic potential, favoring weight gain.Antecedentes: Curcumina tem sido usado como aditivo na dieta de animais nos últimos anos, devido as propriedades medicinais potente dessa molécula. Objetivo: Avaliar se a adição de curcumina na alimentação de bezerras em diferentes fases (pré e pós-desmame) apresenta efeito positivo sobre perfil metabólico, desempenho e ação anti-coccidéo. Métodos: Para isso, 33 bezerros holandeses foram selecionados em vários estágios de desenvolvimento: Experimento 1 (E1: n=10) 18±7 (prédesmame), Experimento 2 (E2: n=11) 64±4 (pré-desmame) e Experimento 3 (E3: n=12) 95±8 (pós-desmame) dias de vida. Para todos os experimentos o período experimental foi de 15 dias, assim como foram delineados com dois grupos: controle e tratados com curcumina. Os grupos de curcumina receberam 200 mg do aditivo por animal/dia no leite (pré-desmame) ou em concentrado (pós-desmame). Coletas de fezes e sangue foram realizadas nos dias 0, 10 e 15 de experimento para contagem de oocistos de Eimeria por grama de fezes e análise de escore fecal. Do sangue colhido foram realizados: hemograma, perfil oxidante e antioxidante, metabolismo proteico, lipídico, glicose, além da pesagem dos animais. Também foi realizado análise de digestibilidade da dieta total ofertada aos animais do Experimento 3 (pós-desmame). Resultados: Independentemente da fase, os animais que receberam curcumina tiveram maior ganho de peso do dia 0 a 15 (E1, E2 e E3, p=0,04, 0,001 e 0,001, respectivamente), provavelmente devido ao aumento da digestibilidade ao feno e concentrado após 72 h (p=0,03 e 0,02, respectivamente). Nos bezerros suplementados, observou-se menor nível de oxidantes (substâncias reativas ao ácido tiobarbitúrico e espécies reativas de oxigênio), ou seja, os níveis séricos de radicais livres e a peroxidação lipídica foram menores. Isto foi provavelmente devido a antioxidantes enzimáticos glutationa S-transferase (E1, E2 e E3, p=0,001, 0,001 e 0,02, respectivamente), catalase (E1, p=0,001) e superóxido dismutase (E3, p=0,001) aumentando nestes animais tratados no dia 15. Além disso, bezerros recebendo curcumina tiveram menores níveis de infecção por Eimeria durante o período experimental e significativos no dia 15 (E1 e E2, p=0,02 e 0,001, respectivamente). Conclusão: A suplementação de curcumina aumenta o potencial coccidiostático e favorece o ganho de peso.Antecedentes: Curcumina ha sido utilizada como aditivo en la dieta de animales en los últimos años, debido a las potentes propiedades medicinales de esa molécula. Métodos: Se seleccionaron 33 terneros Holstein en varias etapas de desarrollo: Experimento 1 (E1: n=10) 18±7 (pre-destete), Experimento 2 (E2: n=11) 64±4 (pre-destete) y Experimento 3 (E3: n=12) 95±8 (post-destete) días de vida. Para todos los experimentos, el período experimental fue de 15 días. Los animales se dividieron en dos grupos: control y tratados con curcumina. Los grupos con curcumina recibieron una dosis de 200 mg del aditivo por animal/día en la leche (pre-destete) o en el concentrado (post-destete). Las colectas de heces y sangre fueron realizadas en los días 0, 10 y 15 para conteo de ooquistes de Eimeria por gramo de heces y análisis de puntaje fecal. Se realizó hemograma, perfil oxidante y antioxidante, metabolismo proteico, lipídico, glucosa sanguínea y pesaje de los animales. También se realizó análisis de digestibilidad de la dieta total para los animales del Experimento 3 (post-destete). Resultados: Encontramos que, independientemente de la fase, los animales que recibieron curcumina tuvieron una mayor ganancia de peso en los días 0 a 15 (E1, E2 y E3, p=0,04, 0,001 y 0,001, respectivamente), probablemente debido al aumento de la digestibilidad del heno y concentrado a las 72 h (p=0,03 y 0,02, respectivamente). En los terneros suplementados observamos un nivel más bajo de oxidantes (oxidantes (sustancias reactivas al ácido tiobarbitúrico y especies reactivas de oxígeno); es decir, los niveles séricos de radicales libres y la peroxidación lipídica fueron más bajos. Esto se debió, probablemente, a los antioxidantes enzimáticos glutatión S-transferasa (E1, E2 y E3 p=0,001, 0,001 y 0,02 respectivamente), catalasa (E1, p=0,001) y superóxido dismutasa (E3, p=0,001) que aumentaron en los animales tratados al día 15. Además, los terneros que recibieron curcumina tuvieron niveles más bajos de infección por Eimeria durante el período experimental y fueron significativos en el día 15 (E1 y E2, p=0,02 y 0,001, respectivamente). Conclusión: La suplementación con curcumina tiene potencial coccidiostático y favorece la ganancia de peso en terneros Holstein
