Age effects in second language learning: stepping stones toward better understanding

    Get PDF
"As should be apparent by now, the position taken in this book is that second language teaching should focus on encouraging acquisition, on providing input that stimulates the subconscious language acquisition potential all normal human beings have. This does not mean to say, however, that there is no room at all for conscious learning. Conscious learning does have a role, but it is no longer the lead actor in the play." (Krashen and Terrell, 1981). In his article, the author DeKeyser (2013), points out the relevance attained to the Second Language Learning, with controversial issues such as conceptual misunderstanding and methodological difficulties. On the other hand, the author seeks that the debate between each other is be able to agree on them, through the suggestions for improvement in subject selection, data collection, and instrumentation to understand how crucial is the age effects for educational policy and curriculum design; and how different are the foreign language learning from second language learning environments

Growth opportunities and the effect of corporate diversification on value

This paper provides empirical evidence of how a firm’s growth opportunities shape the diversification–value relationship on a sample of U.S. companies between 1998 and 2010. Our findings suggest that the negative relationship between diversification and a firm’s value may reverse at high levels of diversification, and that such a U-form diversification–value relation is partly mediated by a firm’s growth opportunities. Results are robust to various model specifications and after controlling for endogenous self-selection of the diversification decision

Enhanced electrical conductivity in graphene-filled polycarbonate nanocomposites by microcellular foaming with sc-CO2

“This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis Group in Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology 01/2016, available online: http://www.tandfonline.com/10.1080/01694243.2015.1137700"Electrically conductive polycarbonate (PC) foams containing a low concentration of graphene nanoplatelets (0.5 wt.%) were produced with variable range of expansion ratio by applying a high-pressure batch foaming process using sc-CO2. The structure of the foams was assessed by means of SEM, AFM and WAXS, and the electrical conductivity was measured in the foam growing direction. Results showed that electrical conductivity of PC composite foams remarkably increased when compared to that of non-foamed PC composite, with both the electrical conductivity and the main cell size of the foams being directly affected by the resultant expansion ratio of the foam. This interesting result could be explained by the development of an interconnected graphene nanoparticle network composed by increasingly well-dispersed and reoriented graphene nanoplatelets, which was developed into the solid fraction of the foam upon foaming by sudden depressurising of the plasticised CO2-saturated PC preform. Some evidences of morphological changes in the graphene nanoplatelets after foaming were obtained by analysing variations in graphene’s (0 0 2) diffraction plane, whose intensity decreased with foaming. A reduction of the average number of layers in the graphene nanoplatelets was also measured, both evidences indicating that improved dispersion of graphene nanoparticles existed in the PC composite foams. As a result, foams with a proper combination of low density and enhanced electrical conductivity could be produced, enabling them to be used in applications such as electromagnetic interference shielding.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

The present investigation was carried out for execution of redistribution áreas, analysis mechanical risks and implementation of signage about maintenance workshops at Honorable Government from Tungurahua, in Ambato city. Who are dedicated to the maintenance such as: Heavy and light vehicles, and metalworking repairs, is intended to improve mechanics with existing methods, redistribution areas and implementation of signage will improve work efficiency and ensure safety of human talent, machinery and equipment. As a tool, process diagrams will be used to analyze the different activities that are carried out where distances and times involved in carrying out a specific maintenance with current area distribution were determined. Mechanical hazards were identified using simplified Spanish method of INSHT Segurity and Hygiene at Work) and control risks by workshops, later implementation of signage in order to mitigate the mechanical risks to which workers are exposed. It is concluded that with the execution of redistribution áreas, analysis mecanical risks and implementation signaling at workshops mechanical maintenance, will be achieved that workkers improve the perfomance at work, visualize places or zones of risks and that working conditions are safe. It is recommended that methodology of 5S be implemented so that, from perspective of this, health and safety of workers improves considerably
