Remittances as investment in the absence of altruism

In the absence of altruism, there is no obvious reason why a migrant should remit part of his income to his family for investment at the home location. If the family invests such income (in housing for example), why would they give it back to the migrant when he returns? This paper is based on the idea that certain people at a migrant's home location may punish those families who do not return those investments in order to prevent their own possibilities of receiving future remittances and investments from being adversely affected. We find that in equilibrium we can have remittances to be invested and given back to the migrant and remittances for private consumption by the migrant's family even in the complete absence of altruism on either the part of the migrant or his family. --Remittances,Altruism,Migration

    Statistical Behavior Of Domain Systems

We study the statistical behavior of two out of equilibrium systems. The first one is a quasi one-dimensional gas with two species of particles under the action of an external field which drives each species in opposite directions. The second one is a one-dimensional spin system with nearest neighbor interactions also under the influence of an external driving force. Both systems show a dynamical scaling with domain formation. The statistical behavior of these domains is compared with models based on the coalescing random walk and the interacting random walk. We find that the scaling domain size distribution of the gas and the spin systems is well fitted by the Wigner surmise, which lead us to explore a possible connection between these systems and the circular orthogonal ensemble of random matrices. However, the study of the correlation function of the domain edges, show that the statistical behavior of the domains in both gas and spin systems, is not completely well described by circular orthogonal ensemble, nor it is by other models proposed such as the coalescing random walk and the interacting random walk. Nevertheless, we find that a simple model of independent intervals describe more closely the statistical behavior of the domains formed in these systems.Comment: v2: minor change

On the Analysis of the Contact Conditions in Temporomandibular Joint Prostheses

Temporomandibular joint replacement (TMJR) is a complex surgical procedure in which the artificial joints available must assure the anatomical reconstruction and guarantee a good range of the natural temporomandibular joint (TMJ) movements. With this aim, different types of TMJ prostheses, including the stock prosthetic system and custom-made prostheses, are being currently implanted. Although temporomandibular joint replacements (TMJRs) are expected to accomplish their function during a number of years, they might actually fail and need to be replaced. This paper analyzes different design factors affecting the contact stress distributions within the TMJ prosthesis interface, which are consequently involved in their deterioration and final failure of the prosthetic device. With this purpose, a numerical model based on finite elements has been carried out in order to evaluate the stress states attained in different prosthesis configurations corresponding to general types of TMJ prostheses. On the other hand, the actual degradation of resected implants has been evaluated via optical microscopy. The linkage between the numerical simulations performed and experimental evidence allowed the authors to establish the different wear and damage mechanisms involved in the failure of stock TMJ prostheses. Indeed, the results obtained show that the contact stresses at the interface between the mandible and the glenoid fossa components play a key role in the failure process of the TMJR devices

Exact Partition Function for the Random Walk of an Electrostatic Field

The partition function for the random walk of an electrostatic field produced by several static parallel infinite charged planes in which the charge distribution could be either ±σ is obtained. We find the electrostatic energy of the system and show that it can be analyzed through generalized Dyck paths. The relation between the electrostatic field and generalized Dyck paths allows us to sum overall possible electrostatic field configurations and is used for obtaining the partition function of the system. We illustrate our results with one example

Viking y Laval en el contexto del pluralismo constitucional y la posibilidad de diálogo con el Tribunal Europeo de Derechos Humanos (Tema Central)

This paper intends to analyse two decisions of the European Court of Justice about the right to strike: Viking and Laval. In both cases, the Court determined that economic freedoms have preeminence over fundamental rights. It will also address to demonstrate how the European Court of Human Rights has developed the right to strike. In this context, a future judicial dialogue between both Courts that force a change in their jurisprudence will be examined in the European pluralist framework.
