New Einstein-Sasaki and Einstein Spaces from Kerr-de Sitter
In this paper, which is an elaboration of our results in hep-th/0504225, we
construct new Einstein-Sasaki spaces L^{p,q,r_1,...,r_{n-1}} in all odd
dimensions D=2n+1\ge 5. They arise by taking certain BPS limits of the
Euclideanised Kerr-de Sitter metrics. This yields local Einstein-Sasaki metrics
of cohomogeneity n, with toric U(1)^{n+1} principal orbits, and n real
non-trivial parameters. By studying the structure of the degenerate orbits we
show that for appropriate choices of the parameters, characterised by the (n+1)
coprime integers (p,q,r_1,...,r_{n-1}), the local metrics extend smoothly onto
complete and non-singular compact Einstein-Sasaki manifolds
L^{p,q,r_1,...,r_{n-1}}. We also construct new complete and non-singular
compact Einstein spaces \Lambda^{p,q,r_1,...,r_n} in D=2n+1 that are not
Sasakian, by choosing parameters appropriately in the Euclideanised Kerr-de
Sitter metrics when no BPS limit is taken.Comment: latex, 26 page
N=2 supersymmetric AdS_4 solutions of M-theory
We analyse the most general N=2 supersymmetric solutions of D=11 supergravity
consisting of a warped product of four-dimensional anti-de-Sitter space with a
seven-dimensional Riemannian manifold Y_7. We show that the necessary and
sufficient conditions for supersymmetry can be phrased in terms of a local
SU(2)-structure on Y_7. Solutions with non-zero M2-brane charge also admit a
canonical contact structure, in terms of which many physical quantities can be
expressed, including the free energy and the scaling dimensions of operators
dual to supersymmetric wrapped M5-branes. We show that a special class of
solutions is singled out by imposing an additional symmetry, for which the
problem reduces to solving a second order non-linear ODE. As well as recovering
a known class of solutions, that includes the IR fixed point of a mass
deformation of the ABJM theory, we also find new solutions which are dual to
cubic deformations. In particular, we find a new supersymmetric warped AdS_4 x
S^7 solution with non-trivial four-form flux.Comment: 50 pages, 2 figures; v2: typos fixed, some intermediate formulas

Heterotic Models from Vector Bundles on Toric Calabi-Yau Manifolds
We systematically approach the construction of heterotic E_8 X E_8 Calabi-Yau
models, based on compact Calabi-Yau three-folds arising from toric geometry and
vector bundles on these manifolds. We focus on a simple class of 101 such
three-folds with smooth ambient spaces, on which we perform an exhaustive scan
and find all positive monad bundles with SU(N), N=3,4,5 structure groups,
subject to the heterotic anomaly cancellation constraint. We find that
anomaly-free positive monads exist on only 11 of these toric three-folds with a
total number of bundles of about 2000. Only 21 of these models, all of them on
three-folds realizable as hypersurfaces in products of projective spaces, allow
for three families of quarks and leptons. We also perform a preliminary scan
over the much larger class of semi-positive monads which leads to about 44000
bundles with 280 of them satisfying the three-family constraint. These 280
models provide a starting point for heterotic model building based on toric
three-folds.Comment: 41 pages, 5 figures. A table modified and a table adde
Flavor of quiver-like realizations of effective supersymmetry
We present a class of supersymmetric models which address the flavor puzzle
and have an inverted hierarchy of sfermions. Their construction involves
quiver-like models with link fields in generic representations. The magnitude
of Standard-Model parameters is obtained naturally and a relatively heavy Higgs
boson is allowed without fine tuning. Collider signatures of such models are
possibly within the reach of LHC in the near future.Comment: LaTeX, 17 pages, 3 figures. V2: reference adde
A Stealth Supersymmetry Sampler
The LHC has strongly constrained models of supersymmetry with traditional
missing energy signatures. We present a variety of models that realize the
concept of Stealth Supersymmetry, i.e. models with R-parity in which one or
more nearly-supersymmetric particles (a "stealth sector") lead to collider
signatures with only a small amount of missing energy. The simplest realization
involves low-scale supersymmetry breaking, with an R-odd particle decaying to
its superpartner and a soft gravitino. We clarify the stealth mechanism and its
differences from compressed supersymmetry and explain the requirements for
stealth models with high-scale supersymmetry breaking, in which the soft
invisible particle is not a gravitino. We also discuss new and distinctive
classes of stealth models that couple through a baryon portal or Z' gauge
interactions. Finally, we present updated limits on stealth supersymmetry in
light of current LHC searches.Comment: 45 pages, 16 figure
Higher Derivative Corrections to R-charged Black Holes: Boundary Counterterms and the Mass-Charge Relation
We carry out the holographic renormalization of Einstein-Maxwell theory with
curvature-squared corrections. In particular, we demonstrate how to construct
the generalized Gibbons-Hawking surface term needed to ensure a perturbatively
well-defined variational principle. This treatment ensures the absence of ghost
degrees of freedom at the linearized perturbative order in the
higher-derivative corrections. We use the holographically renormalized action
to study the thermodynamics of R-charged black holes with higher derivatives
and to investigate their mass to charge ratio in the extremal limit. In five
dimensions, there seems to be a connection between the sign of the higher
derivative couplings required to satisfy the weak gravity conjecture and that
violating the shear viscosity to entropy bound. This is in turn related to
possible constraints on the central charges of the dual CFT, in particular to
the sign of c-a.Comment: 30 pages. v2: references added, some equations simplifie
Flavor Mediation Delivers Natural SUSY
If supersymmetry (SUSY) solves the hierarchy problem, then naturalness
considerations coupled with recent LHC bounds require non-trivial superpartner
flavor structures. Such "Natural SUSY" models exhibit a large mass hierarchy
between scalars of the third and first two generations as well as degeneracy
(or alignment) among the first two generations. In this work, we show how this
specific beyond the standard model (SM) flavor structure can be tied directly
to SM flavor via "Flavor Mediation". The SM contains an anomaly-free SU(3)
flavor symmetry, broken only by Yukawa couplings. By gauging this flavor
symmetry in addition to SM gauge symmetries, we can mediate SUSY breaking via
(Higgsed) gauge mediation. This automatically delivers a natural SUSY spectrum.
Third-generation scalar masses are suppressed due to the dominant breaking of
the flavor gauge symmetry in the top direction. More subtly, the
first-two-generation scalars remain highly degenerate due to a custodial U(2)
symmetry, where the SU(2) factor arises because SU(3) is rank two. This
custodial symmetry is broken only at order (m_c/m_t)^2. SUSY gauge coupling
unification predictions are preserved, since no new charged matter is
introduced, the SM gauge structure is unaltered, and the flavor symmetry treats
all matter multiplets equally. Moreover, the uniqueness of the anomaly-free
SU(3) flavor group makes possible a number of concrete predictions for the
superpartner spectrum.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables. v2 references added, minor changes to
flavor constraints and a little discussion adde
