Geometric origin of mechanical properties of granular materials
Some remarkable generic properties, related to isostaticity and potential
energy minimization, of equilibrium configurations of assemblies of rigid,
frictionless grains are studied. Isostaticity -the uniqueness of the forces,
once the list of contacts is known- is established in a quite general context,
and the important distinction between isostatic problems under given external
loads and isostatic (rigid) structures is presented. Complete rigidity is only
guaranteed, on stability grounds, in the case of spherical cohesionless grains.
Otherwise, the network of contacts might deform elastically in response to load
increments, even though grains are rigid. This sets an uuper bound on the
contact coordination number. The approximation of small displacements (ASD)
allows to draw analogies with other model systems studied in statistical
mechanics, such as minimum paths on a lattice. It also entails the uniqueness
of the equilibrium state (the list of contacts itself is geometrically
determined) for cohesionless grains, and thus the absence of plastic
dissipation. Plasticity and hysteresis are due to the lack of such uniqueness
and may stem, apart from intergranular friction, from small, but finite,
rearrangements, in which the system jumps between two distinct potential energy
minima, or from bounded tensile contact forces. The response to load increments
is discussed. On the basis of past numerical studies, we argue that, if the ASD
is valid, the macroscopic displacement field is the solution to an elliptic
boundary value problem (akin to the Stokes problem).Comment: RevTex, 40 pages, 26 figures. Close to published paper. Misprints and

SCExAO/MEC and CHARIS Discovery of a Low Mass, 6 AU-Separation Companion to HIP 109427 using Stochastic Speckle Discrimination and High-Contrast Spectroscopy
We report the direct imaging discovery of a low-mass companion to the nearby
accelerating A star, HIP 109427, with the Subaru Coronagraphic Extreme Adaptive
Optics (SCExAO) instrument coupled with the MKID Exoplanet Camera (MEC) and
CHARIS integral field spectrograph. CHARIS data reduced with reference star PSF
subtraction yield 1.1-2.4 m spectra. MEC reveals the companion in and
band at a comparable signal-to-noise ratio using stochastic speckle
discrimination, with no PSF subtraction techniques. Combined with complementary
follow-up photometry from Keck/NIRC2, the SCExAO data favors a
spectral type, effective temperature, and luminosity of M4-M5.5, 3000-3200 ,
and , respectively.
Relative astrometry of HIP 109427 B from SCExAO/CHARIS and Keck/NIRC2, and
complementary Gaia-Hipparcos absolute astrometry of the primary favor a
semimajor axis of au, an eccentricity of
, an inclination of degrees, and a
dynamical mass of . This work shows the
potential for extreme AO systems to utilize speckle statistics in addition to
widely-used post-processing methods to directly image faint companions to
nearby stars near the telescope diffraction limit.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, 3 table
Early psychological care of the French victims of the Costa Concordia shipwreck
Most of the French passengers who survived the shipwreck of the cruise ship Costa Concordia were repatriatedfrom Italy to Marseille, one of the stopovers of the cruise. The shipwreck happened during the nightof 13th–14th January 2012 and entailed the forced evacuation of 4195 passengers and crewmembers.Thirty-two persons died and 2 others are still reported missing. The massive and unexpected inflow of402 French citizens in the port of Marseille required the quick setting up of welcome facilities, not only tosolve logistical problems, but also to address psychological and sometimes even medical problems. ThePrehospital Psychological Emergency Service (CUMP) and the Prehospital Emergency Medical Service(SAMU) of Marseille examined 196 persons in total, and were able to avoid a great number of emergencyadmissions deemed necessary because of difficult psychological situations (death, missing or lost persons, acute stress). The objective of this report is to rapidly present the emergency committee as a whole andto describe in more detail the work that the CUMP accomplished during the 36 hours necessary to takecharge of the majority of the French passengers of the Costa Concordia. Most of the French passengers who survived the shipwreck of the cruise ship Costa Concordia were repatriatedfrom Italy to Marseille, one of the stopovers of the cruise. Solar flare prediction using advanced feature extraction, machine learning and feature selection
YesNovel machine-learning and feature-selection algorithms have been developed to study: (i)
the flare prediction capability of magnetic feature (MF) properties generated by the recently developed
Solar Monitor Active Region Tracker (SMART); (ii) SMART's MF properties that are most significantly
related to flare occurrence. Spatio-temporal association algorithms are developed to associate MFs
with flares from April 1996 to December 2010 in order to differentiate flaring and non-flaring MFs and
enable the application of machine learning and feature selection algorithms. A machine-learning
algorithm is applied to the associated datasets to determine the flare prediction capability of all 21
SMART MF properties. The prediction performance is assessed using standard forecast verification
measures and compared with the prediction measures of one of the industry's standard technologies
for flare prediction that is also based on machine learning - Automated Solar Activity Prediction (ASAP).
The comparison shows that the combination of SMART MFs with machine learning has the potential to
achieve more accurate flare prediction than ASAP. Feature selection algorithms are then applied to
determine the MF properties that are most related to flare occurrence. It is found that a reduced set of
6 MF properties can achieve a similar degree of prediction accuracy as the full set of 21 SMART MF
properties
The CPLEAR detector at CERN
The CPLEAR collaboration has constructed a detector at CERN for an extensive programme of CP-, T- and CPT-symmetry studies using and produced by the annihilation of 's in a hydrogen gas target. The and are identified by their companion products of the annihilation which are tracked with multiwire proportional chambers, drift chambers and streamer tubes. Particle identification is carried out with a liquid Cherenkov detector for fast separation of pions and kaons and with scintillators which allow the measurement of time of flight and energy loss. Photons are measured with a lead/gas sampling electromagnetic calorimeter. The required antiproton annihilation modes are selected by fast online processors using the tracking chamber and particle identification information. All the detectors are mounted in a 0.44 T uniform field of an axial solenoid of diameter 2 m and length 3.6 m to form a magnetic spectrometer capable of full on-line reconstruction and selection of events. The design, operating parameters and performance of the sub-detectors are described.

Foresterie
