Episódios recorrentes de hostilidade ou violência aberta contra os judeus, na Europa do século XIX, justificaram a criação de organizações como a Jewish Colonization Association (JCA), responsável pela primeira imigração judaica organizada no Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil, em 1904: a Colônia Philippson. Neste ambiente isolado, estabeleceu-se uma sociedade semelhante ao shtetl europeu. As tradições e a religiosidade mantinham a coesão deste grupo étnico. O artigo trata da evasão de imigrantes judeus da colônia de Quatro Irmãos, no interior do Rio Grande do Sul, na década de 1920, quando ocorreram a Revolução de 1923 ou Assisista e o movimento da Coluna Prestes, que interferiram no cotidiano desta população. Temendo o ressurgimento do que identificavam como pogroms, face aos atos de violência, os colonos abandonaram seus lotes de terra e muitos deles não retornaram.Jewish immigration in Rio Grande do Sul: pogroms in the land of the Gauchos? - Abstract: The article discusses the Jewish immigrants in the settlement of Quatro Irmãos, interior of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, who left their lands when the Revolution of 1923 or Assisista Revolution occurred and the Coluna Prestes(Prestes Riders) passed through the region, because they interfered in the daily life of this population.
