    High frequency variations of Helicobacter pylori isolates in individual hosts in a Chinese population

    SummaryBackgroundColonization of individual hosts by multiple Helicobacter pylori genotypes may be one reason why this infection is persistent and difficult to eradicate.MethodsIn order to study the diversity of H. pylori in individuals, a modified randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) method was applied using primary culture isolates instead of passaged cultures.ResultsThe results showed that variations in H. pylori were prevalent among individuals in the Chinese population, and the incidence of multiple colonization was 99.1% (115/116), significantly higher than in other reports. Moreover, the number of RAPD genotypes was found to be significantly associated with the process of disease development (p<0.05). Indeed, a trend for a higher number of RAPD genotypes within a single host (up to five genotypes) was observed as the disease developed or became more serious. After subculturing for three generations in our experiment, some genotypes present in the primary cultures were lost. The different genotypes in one patient may have originated from a single ancestral strain, as determined by analysis of six H. pylori housekeeping gene alleles, most of which were shown to be identical.ConclusionsThese results suggest that investigating isolates of the primary culture will better reflect the H. pylori diversity in individuals. Also, they indicate that continuous variation of one strain in the gastric microenvironment may be the main cause of H. pylori diversity in individuals in the Chinese population

    Multiplicity distributions inside parton cascades developing in a medium

    The explanation of the suppression of high-pT hadron yields at RHIC in terms of jet-quenching implies that the multiplicity distributions of particles inside a jet and jet-like particle correlations differ strongly in nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC or at the LHC from those observed at e+e- or hadron colliders. We present a framework for describing the medium-induced modification, which has a direct interpretation in terms of a probabilistic medium-modified parton cascade, and which treats leading and subleading partons on an equal footing. We show that our approach can account for the strong suppression of single inclusive hadron spectra measured in Au-Au collisions at RHIC, and that this implies a characteristic distortion of the single inclusive distribution of soft partons inside the jet.     Elemental and Sr–Nd–Pb isotope geochemistry of the Cenozoic basalts in Southeast China : insights into their mantle sources and melting processes.

    We analyzed whole-rock major and trace elements and Sr–Nd–Pb isotopes of the Cenozoic basalts in Southeast China to investigate their mantle source characteristics and melting process. These basalts are spatially associated with three extensional fault systems parallel to the coast line. After correction for the effect of olivine microlites on bulk-rock compositions and the effect of crystal fractionation, we obtained primitive melt compositions for these samples. These primitive melts show increasing SiO2, Al2O3 but decreasing FeO, MgO, TiO2, P2O5, CaO and CaO/Al2O3 from the interior to the coast. Such spatial variations of major element abundances and ratios are consistent with a combined effect of fertile source compositional variation and increasing extent and decreasing pressure of decompression melting from beneath the thick lithosphere in the interior to beneath the thin lithosphere in the coast. These basalts are characterized by incompatible element enrichment but varying extent of isotopic depletion. This element-isotope decoupling is most consistent with recent mantle source enrichment by means of low-degree melt metasomatism that elevated incompatible element abundances without yet having adequate time for isotopic ingrowth in the mantle source regions. Furthermore, Sr and Nd isotope ratios show significant correlations with Nb/Th, Nb/La, Sr/Sr⁎ and Eu/Eu⁎, which substantiates the presence of recycled upper continental crustal material in the mantle sources of these basalts. Pb isotope ratios also exhibit spatial variation, increasing from the interior to the coastal area. The significant correlations of major element abundances with Pb isotope ratios indicate that the Pb isotope variations also result from varied extent and pressure of decompression melting. We conclude that the elevated Pb isotope ratios from the interior to coast are consistent with increasing extent of decompression melting of the incompatible element depleted mantle matrix, which hosts enriched Pb isotope compositions

    Novel CP-violating Effects in B decays from Charged-Higgs in a Two-Higgs Doublet Model for the Top Quark

    We explore charged-Higgs cp-violating effects in a specific type III two-Higgs doublet model which is theoretically attractive as it accommodates the large mass of the top quark in a natural fashion. Two new CP-violating phases arise from the right-handed up quark sector. We consider CP violation in both neutral and charged B decays. Some of the important findings are as follows. 1) Large direct-CP asymmetry is found to be possible for B+- to psi/J K+-. 2) Sizable D-anti-D mixing effect at the percent level is found to be admissible despite the stringent constraints from the data on K-anti-K mixing, b to s gamma and B to tau nu decays. 3) A simple but distinctive CP asymmetry pattern emerges in decays of B_d and B_s mesons, including B_d to psi/J K_S, D+ D-, and B_s to D_s+ D_s-, psi eta/eta^prime, psi/J K_S. 4) The effect of D-anti-D mixing on the CP asymmetry in B+- to D/anti-D K+- and on the extraction of the angle gamma of the unitarity triangle from such decays can be significant.Comment: 32 pages, 5 figures, section V.A revised, version to appear in PR

    Published online: OnlinePublHigh energy and power density alkali-ion (i.e., Li+ , Na+ , and K+ ) batteries (AIBs), especially lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), are being ubiquitously used for both large- and small-scale energy storage, and powering electric vehicles and electronics. However, the increasing LIB-triggered fires due to thermal runaways have continued to cause significant injuries and casualties as well as enormous economic losses. For this reason, to date, great efforts have been made to create reliable fire-safe AIBs through advanced materials design, thermal management, and fire safety characterization. In this review, the recent progress is highlighted in the battery design for better thermal stability and electrochemical performance, and state-of-the-art fire safety evaluation methods. The key challenges are also presented associated with the existing materials design, thermal management, and fire safety evaluation of AIBs.     Charm multiplicity and the branching ratios of inclusive charmless b quark decays in the general two-Higgs-doublet models

    In the framework of general two-Higgs-doublet models, we calculate the branching ratios of various inclusive charmless b decays by using the low energy effective Hamiltonian including next-to-leading order QCD corrections, and examine the current status and the new physics effects on the determination of the charm multiplicity ncn_c and semileptonic branching ratio BSLB_{SL}. Within the considered parameter space, the enhancement to the ratio BR(b→sg)BR(b \to s g) due to the charged-Higgs penguins can be as large as a factor of 8 (3) in the model III (II), while the ratio BR(b→nocharm)BR(b \to no charm) can be increased from the standard model prediction of 2.49% to 4.91% (2.99%) in the model III (II). Consequently, the value of BSLB_{SL} and ncn_c can be decreased simultaneously in the model III. The central value of BSLB_{SL} will be lowered slightly by about 0.003, but the ratio ncn_c can be reduced significantly from the theoretical prediction of nc=1.28±0.05n_c= 1.28 \pm 0.05 in the SM to nc=1.23±0.05n_c= 1.23 \pm 0.05, 1.18±0.051.18 \pm 0.05 for mH+=200,100m_{H^+}=200, 100 GeV, respectively. We find that the predicted ncn_c and the measured ncn_c now agree within roughly one standard deviation after taking into account the effects of gluonic charged Higgs penguins in the model III with a relatively light charged Higgs boson.Comment: 25 pages, Latex file, axodraw.sty, 6 figures.
